How does WWE choose what type of number to use..

Recommended Posts

After seeing the Wrestlemania XXII ad for Chicago , I started thinking back to past Wrestlemania's and whether they used Roman Numerals or not. It's kind of a stupid thing to argue about but it's sort of weird how they randomly switch off using regular numbers and roman numerals.

From what I can remember, leading up to WM 13 all of them used Roman Numerals except WM 2, then 13 used the actual number. WM 14 had no number and was just called "d-X Raided", then you have roman numeral for 15, then Wrestlemania 2000, then "X-7" and X-8". Then Roman Numerals up until this year where they use the actual number, and then back to roman numerals next year.

It's really not much of a big deal, I just thought it was sort of weird.

Sad trivia note: I marked out when the "XXII" appeared on the screen. It's a very bizarre pattern of things that don't make sense, but it might be a symetrical deal - notice that roman numerals retrned with "XIX" and "XX", then went away when it should have been "XXI".

Yeah, and it's especially odd because if I remember correctly, Wrestlemania XXII is using the exact same logo Wrestlemania 21 did, just using roman numerals instead.

Personally I think they should always use the Roman Numurals. For some reason I find Roman Numurals make it seem more epic, if that makes any sence.

If I remember correctly, they've done this since WM X-7 after every Mania. I mean, they always advertise the next Wrestlemania using the same logo as that year's Wrestlemania using a different number. Then they later create a new logo...

IIRC, the ad for WMX-7 (during WM 2000) originally called it WM 2001. I was not pleased about that.

WMXX's advertisement for WM21 did contain the logo that ended up being used.

Funny thing about WrestleMania 2000 is that on the actual PPV and the week leading up to it, it was just "WrestleMania" sans any number or year. There is no mention of which WrestleMania it is during the show nor on the DVD cover. Since then it's been referred to as "2000" or "XVI" but I always found it odd how it was just "WrestleMania" on the PPV itself.

In terms of which to use, I don't think they think to hard about it, rather they decide which would look better for the logo since I guess they think 'long' roman numerals (XVIII for example) would look better with simply two characters (X8). That said, i'm glad the roman numerals are back. WrestleMania taught me how to read them :D

According to the old History of WrestleMania coffee table book that they released, the reason for that is by the time WrestleMania rolled around that year, the whole "Put 2000 after something to make it cooler" was outdated...and at they time, they felt it would be bad to do that.

So, they just dropped the 2000, and made it the first WrestleMania since the first one without a number.

My avatar will tell which ones used roman numerals and which didn't. I seem to remember reading sometime last year that they decided to stop using the Roman Numerals, but if they're promoting 22 as "XXII" then what I read was wrong or they changed there mind. I like the Roman Numerals better than just numbers. It looks better and gives the show title a cooler feel.

I was actually going to say it after saying I learned it from Rocky, but I figured I would let someone else have some fun.
