It is the law that has evolved through decisions made by judges, and initially referred to the principles of law applied in the English courts. Before William the Conqueror invaded England, the Saxons made their own type of laws derived from customs. From this, Common Law was established. Common Law originated in the courts, but soon developed into a body of legal rules for society, outlining offences, rights and the remedies. A uniform system of law has developed over the years where a common approach was used, mainly because of local customs and laws made by the higher authorities. Common Law is based on the notion of precedent. Precedent makes sure that all judges stay consistent and certain of their charges. Judges presiding over a case would look back over decisions on previous cases under the same circumstances, and then decide what the law should be for their case. In England all the circuit judges would meet in Westminster and compare cases that they had heard.
