Bored 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2005 Hey kids, Bowling for Soup! ESPN continues to be to sports what MTV is to music (or what KFC is to chicken to quote Lewis Black). And if Harold Reynolds already going on about "old school" way of handling pitchers and really trying hard to get a Moneyball jab in there in the opening segment wasn't enough. Oh goodie next segment Chris Berman gets to use his tradmarked serious, hushed voice as he talks about Carl Pavano taking one off the melon.
Guest Smues Report post Posted April 10, 2005 ......please tell you're kidding me. They had Bowling For Soup play on Baseball Tonight? That would only be entertaining if the fat guy suffered a fatal heart attack while performing. Great there goes another show on ESPN that used to be watchable. Bored 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2005 They didn't play on the show, just showed a music video of them and the fat guy talking about baseball. No not John Kruk. Apparantly the music video segment will be a regular thing on the show every Sunday now. Good lord. Oh and a hearty fuck you for not even bothering to show actual highlights of the A's game (Tim Kirkjuan did mention Rich Harden at the end of the show) or flash the score to the game. They had time for a music video segment and a heated discussion on baseball vs. golf but can't bother to show the score to a team that's won 90+ games five straight years? Fuck this network. Matt Young 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2005 I haven't seen baseball tonight this season, but I know Bowling For Soup are Red Sox fans. There's a page in the latest EGM talking about how they did the theme for Nintendo's upcoming Pennant Chase Baseball, and when I met the band at the Warped Tour last year (they looked lonely) the really fat guitarist had a BoSox jersey on. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2005 And if Harold Reynolds already going on about "old school" way of handling pitchers and really trying hard to get a Moneyball jab in there in the opening segment wasn't enough. Funny, because with the exception of pitch counts, the sabermetric set is more favorable towards old school handling of pitchers, particularly regarding closer usage and four man rotation. Mik 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2005 He was trying to give Jack McKeon a compliment during that rant for having two pitchers throw CGs in the first week. I just sat there and cringed. All they have to do is state the obvious - Dontrelle only threw 97 pitches and Beckett threw 113. They might have been CGs, but they didn't get overworked. Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted April 11, 2005 I'm still kinda pissed off that instead of seeing team introductions, ON OPENING DAY for NYY/Boston, they decided to let them discuss, for the 5,693rd time of the day mind you, Division Winners and World Series predictions for about 10 minutes. I know it's natural to predict stuff like this but I just hate it in baseball. People are rarely right. Last year I heard a bunch of people think the Diamondbacks would win the NL West and the Phillies would win the NL East. I'm sorry there's to many variables to predict so early in baseball. And it's so long.
Guest OSIcon Report post Posted April 11, 2005 To be fair, ESPN might not cover sports well, but at least 95 percent of their programming is sports-related. With MTV, less than 50% is actually music related.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted April 11, 2005 I honestly don't watch ESPN at all anymore. It's horrible that baseball season just started and I have to sit through news of sub .500 NBA teams before I even get a tiny bit of baseball.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2005 I can't watch ESPN anymore. They treat the god damn Yankees/Red Sox "rivalry" like that is all that matters in baseball and the rest of the league is just cannon fodder. Note to ESPN, most of the country doesn't give a f*ck about the Red Sox and Yankees nor their constant bitching at each other. I'm more interested in the Royals vs Tigers than I am in hearing about the Red Sox and Yankees.

Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted April 11, 2005 The western divisions in baseball seem to be the hardest to predict, especially in the American League. For everything else, I wouldn't be surprised if the AL had New York, Boston, and Minnesota in the playoffs, and for the NL, Atlanta, St. Louis, and Houston. ISportsFan 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2005 I still think from individual game to game, baseball is still the hardest sport to predict. Basketball is probably the easiest. Yeah, in baseball things are such that if a pitcher has a phenominal game, anybody can win. If wind conditions are crazy, bloop singles can be the difference. One day, even bad teams can be on offensively and win games over much better teams. The best hitters get a hit less than 4 out of every ten times they go to the plate, and it's a big deal when a player only bats 3, 4, or 5 times in a day. In basketball, there are a whole lot fewer variables. If you have Shaq, he's going to get a ton of touches and score. Steve Nash will create. Tim Duncan will dominate. Even if a shooter hits an average of 45% of his shots (a pretty dang good percentage for a guard), he gets a ton of points because he shoots a ton more. The sheer amount of possessions makes things tend toward more talent than who is having the better day. Of course, that's why they play so many baseball games. Over 162 games, things will tend toward talent more than in one game. Jason
smh810 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2005 Ho-ly shit... Baseball Tonight should be permanently cancelled for the hideous, inane debate that just aired on ESPN about Derek Lowe and Dave Roberts wearing their jersey's for 10 minutes during their WS ring ceremony. I'm amazed my head didnt explode.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2005 Why the hell should they be wearing a jersey, of a team they're no longer playing for? Just show up in street clothes, get your ring and be done with it.
smh810 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2005 Why the hell should they be wearing a jersey, of a team they're no longer playing for? Just show up in street clothes, get your ring and be done with it. This ceremony was about the 2004 Boston Red Sox not the 2005 but the 2004 Boston Red Sox, I have no issue with them wearing a jersey for the the team they PREVIOUSLY represented the prior year in a World series ring ceremony. Dont take it from me though Tommy Lasorda didnt care about it either.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2005 I really see no reason for anyone to be up in arms about it. They were a member of that team and they were Red Sox. They did help for the team to win it. What I thought was funny was Theo Epstein promising to get the ring to Pedro no matter what. Haha. *pedro is driving down the street and Theo pulls up beside him on a motrocycle* TAKE YOUR RING AND I'LL SEE YOU IN HELL MARTINEZ! *Theo throws it into the car and pedro runs off the road and his car explodes*
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2005 ^LOL Personally, I'd just show up in street clothes, but I don't see a problem with guys wearing their jersey, especially Lowe who was with the team forever. Was Doug Meinzketktiwsztz there?
Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted April 12, 2005 If he's on the Mets, I'm pretty sure he was playing yesterday. Lowe was there because he wasn't the sscheduled starter, and Pedro wasn't there because Boston can shove the ring up their collective asses.
