Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 It took awhile to grow on me, but White1 is fucking stellar. Anyone other than Agent of Oblivion like these guys? Also, since Agent will read this thread, what Sunn O))) do you have. I'm interested as to where I should go next.
Nighthawk Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I do, but I don't have any albums. They were one of those acts where everything I heard was praise and I expected they wouldn't totally live up to it, and that was true to an extent. Very interesting, nonetheless. I will probably get an album based on what ends up being said in this thread.
5_moves_of_doom Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 (edited) Fight of the Behemoth. I'm on IDRM's page, for the most part, but I have heard that album at a friend of mine's house a few times and it's an interesting listen. I've only heard a few tracks from White1 and White2, and both seem good. I can't really say what their best album is however, since as you said it takes repeated listens to really soak everything in and I don't actually own any of the albums. I too will buy whatever Agent tells me to, as I was considering picking up FotB anyhow. Edited April 15, 2005 by 5_moves_of_doom
Dace59 Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I love Sunn O))) and all the other sort of Drone Doom bands out there. Part of me is tempted to say just get White 2, but then it's the last one I've listen to for a while. Sadly uni's meant I've missed seeing them live, but some of my mates have seen them...was a gut testing experience by all accounts. Dunno how you feel about other sorts of Drone bands, but there are a few that offer up a fair chunk of stuff for free on the net.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 They've been on my list for a while. I too will take any recommendation for a starting point.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 00 Void is a monolith. Minimalistic in nature but gigantic in proportion. This cd will render your houseplants into petrified wood. It's not slow, it's stopped. Flight of the Behemoth is probably the way to go unless what I said above is something you find appealing, as this album has riffs (even slower than you'd figure), and some percussion, while 00 Void possesses neither. I have not heard White 2 or The Grimm Robe Demos. For something similar but different, check out doom metal obelisk Earth. Faster than SunnO)), and metaller. Maybe try Khanate's s/t, or Things Viral. Shares Stephen O'Malley (I think) with SunnO)). Also sludged out stony doom metal.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 15, 2005 Author Report Posted April 15, 2005 I've already got Earth on my "to check out" list. I'm gonna mention a band I think I've mentioned here before, but some of you guys might like Growing. They're kinda like Sunn O))); they're just as slow and riffy and loud, but with a greater concentration on melody. Get either The Sky's Run Into the Sea or The Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light. Both are worthwhile.
Nighthawk Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 00 Void actually does sound appealing to me. From reading some stuff about Sunn O))), I was already interested in checking out Khanate, and Stephen O'Malley's other former band, Burning Witch. They both sound like something I could get into.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Like all small southern metal labels, all the bands on Southern Lord are totally inbred as far as lineups. Just look at the early-mid 90's New Orleans metal bands.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted May 5, 2005 Author Report Posted May 5, 2005 Southern Lord is based out of California. Anyway, I checked out Earth's Earth 2. I like it, but, at 70 minutes, it's way too much ungodly drone for my tolerance level.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Maybe I just made that connection because they're called Southern Lord and a lot of the lineups are inbred.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted August 22, 2005 Author Report Posted August 22, 2005 Much like I did with Sunn O))), I've come around on Earth's Earth 2. I was blasting all 73 minutes of it at the station tonight, hopefully putting a fright into all the new freshmen milling about campus. It had an effect on me, at least; I was shaking by the end of it. Also, I ordered Sleep's Dopesmoker today. Can't wait for it to come in.
Gary Floyd Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 I think Sunn0))) are great. I also recommend Boris, who are from Japan. Also, Sleep, especially the album Jerusalem. That album has the funniest lyrics ever, and creates two words: Marijuanaute and Weedian.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted August 22, 2005 Author Report Posted August 22, 2005 Jerusalem is just a truncated version of Dopesmoker. Sleep originally offered Dopesmoker to Island Records as their major label debut, but Island balked at 1) releasing an album that consisted of nothing but one 63 minute song, and 2) releasing an album called Dopesmoker in the first place. The guys in Sleep, in response, cut about ten minutes off the album and divided what was left into individual tracks, calling the new version of their work "Jerusalem". Island still balked; the album was finally released under the name Jerusalem several years after Island dropped the band without ever releasing anything by them. The unedited version of Dopesmoker was finally released ten years it was recorded, and that's what I ordered today.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Boris is pretty cool, too. Good mention, there.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted August 24, 2005 Author Report Posted August 24, 2005 Hell yeah on Boris. I managed to blow out my old crappy comp speakers while listening to them.
Gary Floyd Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 Another good band is Church of Misery. They are also from Japan, and while they're not a drone group, they play sludgey, sometimes bluesy doom/stoner metal. Oh, and they have two albums of songs about Serial Killers.
Nighthawk Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 Man, do one of you guys know who the Japanese band is where the guy wears the huge robot arm? I know it's random, but you seem to know Japanese bands and I cannot for the life of me remember who that was.
Gary Floyd Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 Man, do one of you guys know who the Japanese band is where the guy wears the huge robot arm? I know it's random, but you seem to know Japanese bands and I cannot for the life of me remember who that was. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, but I can try to look them up for you. I don't own a whole lot of music from Japanese artists (I have two compilations of Japanese Indy music, a few Merzbow albums, And a lot of Japanese bands on my computer, including Boris) I'm not a huge expert when it comes to Japanese indy music and metal, I'm just a fan.
Nighthawk Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 I have this magazine with an article on them buried somewhere which I can't find. No big deal, but if you run across a Japanese band (come to think of it, I think it was a duo) where one guy wears a huge, theatrical robot arm, let me know.
Nighthawk Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 While on the subject, Japanese techno-pop group MOVE are awesome.
5_moves_of_doom Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I'm seeing Sun O))) and Earth live in about a week... I wonder how that will be. EDIT: Merzbow and Growing as well. Woo.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted August 26, 2005 Author Report Posted August 26, 2005 I'd go see Sunn O))) for the sheer endurance factor of it; I can't imagine them being very entertaining live.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I guess I need to give these guys a shot, since all my peeps be all-up-ons. Etc.
Gary Floyd Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 EDIT: Merzbow and Growing as well. Woo. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Merzbow is like my fucking hero.
