Silence 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2005 Just a while ago, I was playing one of my games and the grinding noises were going on for a long time, so I decided to turn the system off, and then back on in hopes of the PS2 playing correctly again. Well, it still made grinding noises, so I switched to another game, and the same thing happened. BTW, I have one of the pre-Slim PS2 model PS2's (not the earliest version), so I was wondering what I should do about this situation? Will I have to switch over to a Slim PS2 or get my current one fixed again (I had someone fix it just a year ago due to the laser noises)? If I have to switch, how will I know that the Slim PS2 won't encounter any bugs/glitches later on, and is the Slim PS2 worth buying at all?
Jericholic82 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 yknow, my ps2 makes a lot of noise often, but it hasnt affected my games at all. However recently I hear alittle squeaky nosie sometimes (not all the time) my guess is were both screwed.
LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 I have the grinding problem too. I took apart my ps2 to try and figure it out. I have no idea what the problem is. Sometimes my ps2 works absolutely fine, other times it has the grinding problem. My suggestion is to not use it for a while, maybe make sure there isn't a lot of dust inside. Special K 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2005 Try to wait it out for the PS3. I bet Gamestop can fix the little guy too. I'm frustrated with PS2s. They have the weirdest shit. I have NEVER had a game skip, but it only recognizes games to start playing them 50% of the time, often when the game is brand fucking new. Once it starts playing, nary a problem. Man, Sony better step up and make a durable machine next time.
Guest TheBigCalbowski Report post Posted April 21, 2005 I had this problem before I bought the slim model. I've read that it's the 2 rods that the laser travels on and it'll happen for games where the laser has to read from different parts of the disc all the time. Guest EQ Report post Posted April 22, 2005 Your PS2 is about to die. This is what happened to mine and I had to replace it.

Man, Sony better step up and make a durable machine next time. I can't blame you. The PS2's are almost like video game system versions of the WWF No Mercy N64 video game, except instead of data-erasing and no-save glitches, the PS2's have grinding noises that won't allow games to play anymore. Odd comparison, but what the hell has gotten into the video game industry in recent years anyway with all these system/video game bugs/glitches?
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2005 Odd comparison, but what the hell has gotten into the video game industry in recent years anyway with all these system/video game bugs/glitches? The machines today are a hell of a lot more complex and powerful, hence more to go wrong? (And while Sony is the biggest offender, MS had that power cord issue) 3D games are inherently more complex and prone to bugs and glitches than old 2D games? If they aren't (I'm assuming they are), it's more difficult to uncover *all* the bugs and glitches, and harder to then fix them? Mr. Lightning "I'm a Programmer" Flik can feel free to jump in, and make any additions/corrections if he'd like. Maybe we can have Steven Joseph give us the economic reasons. Then Damu can tell us how big he is.
Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2005 It's actually an easy fix to get rid of the noise, but it's not quite as easy to get the discs to read after that. You have to adjust the laser's height, because it was altered somehow. However, the laser doesn't read as well when you do that, sometimes.
Anya 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2005 There's more moving parts in a CD system than cartridge. That's why we never had this many problems in the past. Lasers are just more delicate. MS had more than just the powercord problem. There's the obnoxious Thompson drive flaw...
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2005 MS had more than just the powercord problem. There's the obnoxious Thompson drive flaw... What was wrong? I'm aware that MS used 3 different suppliers for the laser so far in the X-Box (the trays allow you to tell them apart), so apparently they weren't pleased with some of them (could have been cost issues instead of quality, but not sure). Does it relate to that or is it something else?

Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2005 Launch Xbox here. No problems. Meanwhile, the PS2 is pretty famous here and abroad for breaking apart. Google "disc read error" and welcome to the club.
