Who was better in 1995, WWF or WCW?

Recommended Posts

Looking back, 1995 was a pretty rough year for wrestling. Bad gimmicks, goofyness, bad matches. So who would you say had the better year, quality wise? And what could each promotion have done differently to get better results? Who could they have pushed, what angles/stories could they have run that would have been better?

WWF had the better year solely for the main events of 4 of their PPVs and some undercard matches. The Bret v. Diesel matches at Royal Rumble and Survivor Series, and Bret v. Bulldog at IYH 5 were all very good to excellent. Shawn Michaels v. Diesel at WrestleMania XI was decent as well (even if Bigelow/LT was "main event" too). Plus, Jarrett v. Michaels at IYH 2 was phenomenal.

Both WCW and the WWF had terrible years with gimmicks, and the WWF had the terrible "Diesel Power" year, but since all the out-of-the-ring stuff sucked for the most part I'd have to say the WWF had the better year due to ring work.

I actually liked WCW more. Hogan was his usual deadweight --- but we had Johnny B. Badd suddenly becoming a solid worker, some really good Steamboat v Savage matches, etc.

Another thing I failed to mention was just how much more disappointing WCW was in 1995. Diesel was expected to completely suck, but when he had a quality opponent his matches were excellent. Of course, they had sucky Mabel v. Diesel matches and such, but that was no worse than Hogan's garbage. Also, I forgot to mention the ladder match at SummerSlam and all the undercard matches Bret Hart had that were really good.

Hogan, even when paired with good opponents like Vader, still had terrible matches. It was a much more disappointing main event picture than the WWF had. The undercard was developing, but it didn't really translate into great stuff on the PPVs like the WWF's undercard did for some of the year. I would be remiss in not mentioning Fall Brawl, though, with Johnny B. Badd v. Brian Pillman and Ric Flair v. Arn Anderson in great matches.

While the only storyline that intrigued me from the WWF was Razor/Kid/Dean saga, Nitro kicking off puts WCW over the top despite a lackluster 1st half of the year. The fact that a weekly wrestling show would be live every week with zero blantant squash matches was something I've never seen before. Intriguing stuff. Plus, other than War Games, Fall Brawl was excellent.

WCW was much better. It had a much fresher product.

The New Japan Vs. WCW World Cup.

The World War 3 Battle royal for vacant World Title.

Hogan getting screwed out of the WCW World Title.

Benoit joins Horsemen.

Eddie and Benoit arrive and stomp shit out of each other.

Flair reforms Horsemen.

Flair Vs. Arn.

SABU~!

And that's all in the final 4 months of the year.

Edit:

Also...

Madusa dumps WWF Women's Title in Trash,

LEX LUGER jumps to WCW on 1st Nitro.

*STING Vs. HULK HOGAN* on Nitro.

Jushin Liger in states Vs. Pillman

How could I forget Benoit and Guerrero fighting 150 times on Nitro that year? That was awesome. I take it all back. The WWF had better matches on PPV for the most part but WCW was winning by the end of the year because of all the Horsemen stuff UseTheSledgehammerUh was talking about. That Horsemen angle with Anderson, Flair, and Sting was pretty good.

I think you mean Flair vs. Savage. Steamboat retired in '94.

Anyway, I'd give the edge to WCW. Both promotions were awful for the first eight months of the year, but once the Monday Night Wars got started, they both improved. Still, I'd pick WCW since they picked up great wrestlers like Benoit, Malenko, Guerrero and had them wrestle each other almost every week. Plus, the influx of the Japanese wrestlers with the whole Sonny Onoo angle didn't exactly make for good TV, but it helped to make a great Starrcade. For most of the year, the promotions were dominated by awful champions (Diesel and Hogan), but that scene imporved at the end of the year. As excited as I was when Hart won the title at Survivor Series, I was even more excited when Flair won the title at Starrcade, since I honestly didn't think he'd ever win the belt back once Hogan entered WCW.

Yup, that's what I meant. God knows what I was thinking, because I actually didn't like the Steamboat v Flair 1994 matches.

Yeah Savage/Flair on GAB 95 was very good along with Wright v. Pillman. That PPV had those two good matches and a bunch of shit following.

this was during the brief period where I was into WCW more than WWF (pretty much from Sept. 95 till the Piper angle in Nov. 96 which turned me off to the product). I actually liked the Hogan/Vader storyline and Flair/Savage. The DOD gimmick was so corny that I actually kind of got a kick out of it. It was so 80s WWF (which I'm a mark for)

Well for me, WWF was always my fav in my heart cuz it was the first fed I got into. WCW I liked alot especially in 92 that was a good year.

95, I think I was more into WWF, I liked Diesel and Bret had been my fav for several years. Plus you had HBK turning face which I totally fell for and became a huge shawn mark. The only ppvs I ordered were all wwf (wm 11, in your house 2, in your house 5) well actualyl I never ordered a wcw ppv in my life so.

WCW was ok, the second part of the year it was much better. I missed the early days of nitro sept-mid dec cuz I only had basic cable for those months.

I guess I would say WWF, but only by a small margin.
