Namco Marks Anniversary

Celebrate publisher's milestone with compilation release.

by Patrick Klepek

04/28/2005

This year Namco will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and in celebration, the publisher plans to release Namco Museum 50th Anniversary Arcade Collection on PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC and Game Boy Advance.

The compilation will include 14 classic games from the 70s and 80s, including Pac-Man, Ms. Pc-Man, Galaga, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Pole Position, Pole Position II, Rolling Thunder, Rally X, Bosconian, Dragon Spirit, Sky Kid, Xevious and Mappy.

The GBA version only includes Pac-Man, Ms. Pacman, Galaga, Dig Dug and Rally X, while on the Xbox, players will be able to post their high scores online.

"Namco Museum 50th Anniversary brings countless hours of family-friendly entertainment to gamers everywhere," said Jeff Lujan, business director, Namco Hometek Inc.

Namco Museum 50th Anniversary Arcade Collection will be released this August.

Gee, wasn't somebody asking for Rolling Thunder before? Well, there you go.

On the upside, it's good to have a compilation with just the cream of the crop. However--a mere 14? Of these very simple games? Darnit, I wanted a compilation of museum volumes 1-5 plus the Japanese-only Encore. Sure, lots of filler there, but it'd be worth the price to see all those rare, obscure games in one place.

I'm sure Flik may want to go into detail about how it isn't as easy as it seems, but--14?! Midway gave us 20 games each on the first two Arcade Treasures volumes, even if they had their share of weak games on them.

So basically its a rerelease of Namco Museum but now with 4 new games? Are these games going to have the "letterbox matted" look with the Arrangement games looking small?

I want DIG DUG 2 damn it!

Rolling Thunder wasn't on any of the previous Museums except Encore, which was a Japan-only release.

Info on all of Namco's prior compilations can be found here:

http://www.classicgaming.com/pac-man/Museum/

The Museum games, 1-5, can be looked up by clicking on the N,A,M,C, or O pictures at the top of the page.

EDIT: found a better site for it here http://www.retroarcade.com/console/namcomus/namcomus.asp

So, nothing off IV, the best of vol. 1, 2, 3, and 5, and a couple off Encore.

So those of you begging for Wonder Momo in the US, you're outta luck.

The first thing that popped into my head was "50 year anniversary? The hell?"

Did some quick research on the matter, and it seems that before they hit the game market in the 1970's, they made rocking horse rides. They should make an anthology out of that, too.

Back on topic, thank you, Namco, for finally giving me an anthology with Rolling Thunder. Only took you five other compilations and not shipping Encore to the U.S. to finally get it. Jerks.

Capcom's classics compilation is going to kick the snot out of it, though.

Did RVD name his move after the game?

Will it be delayed/cancelled like the GBA Mega Man Collection?

Is rolling thunder that game where you shoot all the terrorists? Wow, that was specific...

yeah, you're the dude in the red turtleneck shooting the guys in multi-colored KKK hoods, trying to save your girl from a green headed alien...
