What other emotional response were you guys expecting, then?

"Oh okay, that sucks." ?

It's just like the fanboys being pissed that Jar Jar doesn't get killed. There's just no way to force it being otherwise without ruining the flow of it.

But who yells out "NOOOOOO" after hearing of the death of a loved one? Add that to the fact that Vader has such a low, monotone voice and was in a suit with a cape and you pretty much have the definitive moment in film history.

I agree it sounded weird, but I can't think of any other way it would have worked better, since up to that point Anakin was still doing what he believed was right, and it was only after hearing about Padme's death does he unleash his anger/fury/wrath upon the galaxy as Darth Vader. I liked the touch of his force powers shaking, moving, and otherwise breaking everything in the room as he screamed it.

And I've heard plenty of people yell out NOOO after hearing the death of a loved one, then break into sobbing. Just not out of a more-machine-than-human guy in all black with a cape and helmet in a deep monotone robotic voice.

It's just silly. "NOOOOOO!" is already a goofy cliche and it's even worse seeing it from a guy in a robot suit with a cape. He could have just quietly said "no, you must be wrong..." and then just yelled.

A lot of Palpatine's lines are way over the top, but it just didn't work in this situation.

yeah, the no was way to over the top...it would have been better if he didn't say anything really. Just silence<well, not complete silence as you'd hear the Vader breathing>

One of the best NOOOOOOS is in Team America I think, and it was satirizing that whole schtick.

Anyway, I didn't find that moment too big of a deal. The movie itself was really awesome, especially in the 2nd half. Onto the spoilers:

Maybe the Clone Wars cartoons are interesting, but I wasn't feeling much of this at all. Grievous to me just goes up there with the Trade Federation jobbers as being one of the lamer heels in the series. Dude has 4 arms with sabers and still is essentially a jobber for Obi Wan. I think Lucas made a mistake in whacking Dooku so early....Dooku was the only credibility that the Separtists had. Never ever get rid of a main human heel and build around a robotic bum, since the audience by definition can't take the robot as seriously. It would have also worked slightly better to hold this off till later when Anakin is THIS close to the heel turn, and then he kills Dooku and takes his place at the Emperor's side. Instead we get Grievous and the other separtists constantly say "Punk, you're no Dooku."

That aside, the movie started picking up insane momentum in the 2nd half. Hell I was practically in tears several times, only to then have some dipshit like Jar Jar (during Padme's funeral) or the Trade Federation assclowns show up and take me out of it. Hell I marked out for Vader killing the Trade Federation....that to me was as good as Jar Jar dying. And unlike Jar Jar there is actual plot reason for them to finally die.

Did anyone think of something rather curious. How could Obi Wan EVER beat Anakin in a fight? We'd already seen Anakin trash Dooku after Dooku beat down Obi Wan like it was nothing. Anyone else think that it wasn't until Obi Wan finally got really pissed at Anakin that his true potential as a Jedi was realized? In other words that until he embraced a touch of the dark side himself he wasn't as effective.

Anyway, in the overall series I still can't really rate this as high as Empire or Jedi, if for no other reason that I knew exactly what was coming. I'd rank it thusly:

1. Empire

2. Jedi

3. Sith

4. Star Wars (though this is really more of a tie with Sith)

5. Attack of the Clones (I actually quite like this one but by definition it is the 2nd weakest)

6. Phantom Menace.

Intersting note:

In the novelization, I believe that Vader wanted to unleash his wrath upon the Emperor himself, but he was no longer more powerful than Palpatine since he lost an arm and two legs. So instead of hurting Palpatine, he destroys the room instead.

You're forgetting the key to the Vader yell. Palpatine said that Vader himself caused her death, not just that she died.

Obi-Wan is the motherfucking mountain of a man that he is because he finds ways to win when he has absolutely no right to. He's the Patriots of the Star Wars universe.

Hmm...a thought.

Now that Lucus is done with the Star Wars movies...any chance any other Lucusarts stuff will be made to movies?

I have, and always will, KILL to have a Monkey Island movie for some reason.

I would LOVE a Monkey Island film. It would translate pretty easily as well to a film I think.

At the moment I'm working my way through all the films. I watched Episodes I & II on Wednesday, Sith and ANH Thursday and Emipre yesterday. Going to round it off with ROTJ today and quite possibly start reading Heir To The Empire by Zahn which I've had on my book shelf for about 6 years but never actually read all of.

The more and more I think about this I consider Obi Wan the true hero of roughly the first 4 episodes. Whether it's taking out Darth Maul, tangling with Jango Fett, Dooku (well ok he never fared so well there), basically taking the steam out of the Clone Wars when he finally kills Gen. Grievous , and of course finally makes Anakin his bitch....Obi Wan always manages to pull something out of his ass.

One could argue that Anakin didn't quite go full force vs. Obi Wan, still having feelings for his master. Whereas when betraying Mace Windu...well why not? Windu was always sort of cold towards Anakin, and Anakin probably wasn't as hesitant.

I'd go with the opposite. Vader was so focused in killing Obi-Wan and lashing out at him, that the more observant Obi-Wan was able to put himself in an advantageous position. Obi-Wan has him beat before that final move (like he says), but Vader tries for it anyways out of hatred/egotism. Obi-Wan is simply more aware of his surroundings in that fight. You see it all the way through. Vader is simply chasing him for the most part, especially in the later half of the duel.

Obi-Wan trained Anakin -- it's not hard to believe that he knew what he was going to do before he did it. And, it's not hard to believe that Obi couldn't beat him either.

So it's kind of like a deal where a mediocre basketball team loses by 20 to one team, but beats another team that's a powerhouse because the coach of one team was the assistant and his mentor knew everything he'd do?

These are splitting hairs I guess, but I might argue that Anakin didn't hate Obi Wan as much as he did the whole situation. He was just pissed at everything. To wit:

Anakin and Padme are talking about the Jedi "betrayal." Anakin says they're being rounded up and killed and Padme asks about Obi Wan. He's like "Well, I dunno...hopefully Obi Wan will stay loyal to the Republic and I won't have to kill him."

So you see, he did have second thoughts about killing his old master here, whereas by the time Ep. 4 rolls around he'd been a Sith for 20+ years and didn't mind killing anyone (aside from his son of course). All those years of being fucked up and deformed probably killed off ANY good feelings for Obi Wan.

Yeah...

Anakin didn't really hate Obi-Wan until he thought Kenobi had turned Padme against him.

Why the hell are we still doing spoiler warnings? The movie came out 3 days ago...anyone who wants to read a thread about it has probably already seen it...

Not to mention there's not anything that should be the least surprising, like

Anakin turns out to have a son named Luke!

:o

My take on it was that Obi-Wan was definatly a beaten man before Vader trys to flip over him. Vader believing himself to have greater abilitys than he actual has is ultimately his undoing at this point in time.

After watching the original trilogy again something I picked up in the Star Wars universe is always take an R2 unit with you as you can break into ANYWHERE with one of them apparently.

yes, but I am pretty sure that we see Plo Koon in the Battle of Geonosis and I am 99% sure he does not have a yellow lightsaber.

In fact, I don't think there has been a yellow lightsaber in any of the movies. We've seen lots of blue, a few green, Mace's purple and the Sith's red (pink, whatever) but no yellow.

Plo Koon was supposed to have a yellow lightsaber, but due the background colors on Geonosis, they went with blue/green.

Finally saw it last night, and it falls pretty much in line where I thought it would:

ESB

ANH

ROTJ

ROTS

AOTC

TPM

Although, ROTS and ROTJ are pretty much interchangeable in their spots, depending on my mood.

A lot of stuff has already been covered, but I liked how Palpatine "stabs" w/ his lightsaber a bunch of times, instead of the normal "swing" attacks favored by everyone else. That dude's a killer, yo.

Yoda does that too when he throws it at the Clone Trooper, then jump on him to takeit out.

Good point.

I just got back from seeing it for the second time...I gotta say it might be equal to ROTJ (not that ROTJ was perfect, mind you).

I'm 100% sure the whole "NOOOOOOO!!!!" sequence, with the flat table and the ripping of the hand restraints was intended to be an homage to old monster movies.

Speaking of spoilers, I wonder if that big thing the Empire was building will be in the next movie...maybe Anakin's kids will team up somehow to destroy it. :D

That was a 1-time thing, though. Palp did it pretty frequently.
