Songs that could've been big

Black and Corduroy weren't singles huh? I dunno, I seem to hear Black on the radio a lot even now, and Corduroy and Better Man are still played. I still think the Vitalogy album was so utterly shitty aside from a couple of decent songs that it flat out killed their popularity, and their album sales post Vitalogy tend to back this up. I still remember getting Vitalogy and listening to Eddie Vedder dick around on accordian, rambling about bugs, spelling privacy for a whole track...I thought it was a joke.

Black, Corduroy, and BetterMan were never released as "singles", but rather as "album cuts" that radio programmers picked up on...

 

P-R-I-V-A-C-Y...is actually a tape loop, play it backwards and it is ed singing "oh pete townsend saved my life..."

 

and i liked the fact that Vitalogy broke regular "album" molds...it had more of a jammy concert feel to it...

Vitalogy is the best Pearl Jam album for me. But i'm only a casual PJ fan. Meaning I know they still exist.

I Am Mine

'I am Mine' had a film-clip, though I agree with the sentiment. 'Corduroy' in particular is a magnificent song.

 

As for Vitalogy, I consider it to be Pearl Jam's finest album, by a substantial margin. Having said that, most Pearl Jam fans/casual fans that I've spoken to don't like it aside from 'Better Man'.

I always thought that Korn's 'All in the Family' would have made for a popular single as a followup to 'Freak on a Leash'. Not because I think it's a good song (it isn't anything special), but given the music landscape at that time period (mid '99), Limp Bizkit and Fred Durst were extremely popular - I think it could have been somewhere near as big as were 'Got the Life' and 'Freak on a Leash', or 'Nookie' and 'Faith'.

A Perfect Circle get all sorts of airplay on rock radio, but Maynard has always been an acquired taste to the general public.

Man, they dont' even get attention on rock radio in Atlanta. The only attention they ever got down here was the video with the Bikini Bandits.

Not much play here in D.C. either. The local "alternative rock" station, WHFS, used to play them the most, but they changed formats to play fucking mariachi music. All that left us D.C. rock fans was DC 101, which plains mostly the rock songs that make it into the top 40 charts. If you're LUCKY, maybe they'll play "Weak and Powerless" off Thirteen Steps or "Passive" from Emotive. Every now and then, if you're REALLY lucky, they'll play "Sober", but beyond that, nuthin'.

Our rock stations around here have a real hard-on for Passive at the moment, so I hear it a lot more than I care to. My favorite Tool song is Sober, but it rarely gets any play. Im sure its like this all over the place, but our station on plays what the programming director (who also happens to be the afternoon dj), likes. So, we get a lot of Tool, old Metallica, and not much else.

You know it's funny but whenever I go back and listen to these older Pearl Jam albums it makes me wonder why these guys got so popular. I suppose it is the nearly 15 years of constant overplay on the radio but I can't hardly stomach Jeremy, Alive, or Evenflow anymore. The more I hear them the more I pick up on how dull and overly long the songs are, how much pointless jamming PJ was prone to. PJ was the safest grunge band, not as bizarre and punk inspired as Nirvana, not as dark and hard as Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. Hell, when I first got a PJ CD I put it on and listened to it with my parents and it didn't annoy or offend them, and isn't that half the fun? I guess that's why they sold so many records, they didn't really scare or offend much of anyone.

 

It's funny but I remember getting two CDs around Christmas in 1993: PJ's Vs. and Nirvana's In Utero. I listened to Vs. first and it was...ok. Nothing real thrilling, nothing terrible, just there. Then I put on In Utero and it grabbed me by the balls and didn't let go, it stunned me.

 

Anyway, as far as local radio goes, 100.5 the Fox plays Metallica and Tool stuff out the ass. APC as well. It's funny since The Fox is a station preferred by the redneck elements of the city, as compared to 105.1 which is the more alternative station. I think Tool and APC have a more redneck following than some think, haha. Not sure WHY exactly but it seems to be the case here in Louisville.

I know a lot of people on this board hate them, but I felt Nickelback really dropped the ball with their video for "Never Again". The song told a typical story of domestic abuse, ending with the woman getting fed up and killing her boyfriend/husband. The video for this song could have been great, but instead they opted for the live concert footage video, that really made no sense. This pissed me off to no end, since I had highly anticipated the song getting released as a single since the first time I heard it on the cd.

Yeah...thats a prime example of one right there. The video coulda made this song HUGE.
