Pretty strange question but when Lance came into the company in '97 was he just a straight up wrestler? I recall he debuted in February and was the Barely Legal PPV against RVD, (but was scheduled to be against Candido who got injured.) but I can't remember what gimmick he had. He didn't come into the company with Tammy Lynn Bytch did he? Because I'm sure that didn't start until the following year, so what was he? Just a straight up Canadian wrestler?

Straight up wrestler, yes.

He had the horrible ponytail haircut back when he debuted. First match I know he had was a curtain jerking match with Balls Mahoney (who was also still 'just another wrestler') at Crossing The Line Again in February '97.

Cool. So there was no build to the Candido/Storm match that was supposed to go down at Barely Legal?

Storm didn't really find his niche until later in '97/early '98, when he became a Triple Threat prospect (which was a great angle, IMO, such as subtle things like him not being allowed to hold up the Triple Threat sign since he wasn't officially in, etc.) and then he and Candido became the "tag champs who hated each other". The Impact Players is what really broke him through though, I always thought they were an awesome team.

Exactly.

Not that Credible was bad, but Storm clearly deserved the push in that team.

He faced Shane Douglas for the tv title in a good Douglas match at Born to Be Wired in 1997, that's hwhen he started to stand out and show potential in ECW for me...

Pics of horrible haircut, plus review of match, event and DVD in my old review:

Good review, I don't see a picture of Lance with his ponytail though

It was a rat tail not a ponytail!

Oh and Lance Storm was over the day he confronted Shane Douglas and said "Real wrestlers come from CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA!". The time as the Impact Players was ok but Dawn Marie and Justin Credible were stealing all of Storm's heat.
