Mortal Kombat did go very ninja-heavy back in the days of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. No one can deny that. Other than that, their character design was decent to mehish, with a few bright stars here and there. I wouldn't say Mortal Kombat has the worst art or character design for any game.

Here is some bad character designs:

It looks like after Heroes of Mana is released Square Enix will call it quits on Mana.

Sonic may as well be dead, but it has an utterly insane userbase that buys the games no matter what.

I hope you're not trying to be ironic there...

Except they look nothing alike. Gears isn't anything like Halo either, really. Different game perspective, vastly different gameplay and play tactics, different settings, vastly different characters, a distinctly different online community.

Gears isn't the Halo stand-in. It's its own animal.

Hell, the Crackdown Agent resembles Marcus far more than Marcus resembles a Halo character:

The biggest similarities are that a) you shoot stuff, b) the recharging shield is in. Hell considering that, and that you can *jump at will* on Crackdown, Crackdown is about as close to Halo as Gears is.

Bridget: "Chicks got a dick!"

the Guilty Gear universe has a lot of weird shit going on with it, yet I'm strangely drawn to it.

You kind of have to appreciate it for its honestly. Most game universes designed and bred in Japan just appear as if a bunch of male characters are gay for each other or dress like women.

Of course, 2D fighters are nichey already so I guess it's not that surprising. Take a look at how Melty Blood appeared.

Alex probably is a tad pissed he's gay for Bridget.

correct me if I'm wrong but the character Venom is gay, right? Wich is odd for a Japan game because he doesn't LOOK gay, aside from the long hair in his face. If anyone looks gay it's Anji Mito:

According to wiki, Venom is the only "officially stated" homosexual character, which surprises me. I was pretty sure ASW was pretty open about the whole thing. However, there's points in the huge, convoluted story where its heavily implied some character have a thing/had a thing for other characters.

Sol is named after Freddy Mercury and his moves named for Queen songs FFS.

Bridget is one of the straightest dudes, incidentally. I don't think it's ever been hinted or implied he likes guys.

Too tell the truth, I'll give the pass on Bridget. Just because Guilty Gear is famous for its "wacky" character design, and Bridget happens to be one of the wackier and most famous character from the series, in both a good and bad way (and there is plenty of bad ways, trust me >_<)

I won't give a pass on Marcus Pheonix or whatever Mr. Generic's name is. He just looks too much like every horrible plotless action game put together in one single entity. Same goes for the character design in Crackdown and Halo. They all may be fun games in their own right, but put some creativity in the characters at least!

For some reason, I'm not suprised that nobody tried to defend Vaan. I think he is universally known as a horrible character.

Here is the reason I can't play Donkey Kong Country 3. Horrible.

Bridget is awesome, you're insane. Everything about Guilty Gear is awesome.

Vaan was the worst FF lead of all time (not including FFI and II, but that goes without saying). Uninspiring character design and the guy didn't even get any development in the game. FFXII did have one of the best character designs of all time though.

Now this is a terrible character design (on the right).

I'm not saying Marcus isn't a bad character design. He's a chunk-headed, rock-faced Liefeldian nightmare to be sure. Plus those glowing things on his armor seem to be of no practical use, and in fact could probably be used to gauge a headshot from a baddie. However, he *doesn't look like Master Chief*, which seemed to be your big complaint. However, when playing the game I didn't care. He seemed to fit well in the context of his world. It is acceptable and works when you find out what happened to him, what happened to his world, see the ruined/burned propaganda lying about, etc. Don't take it completely at face value.

Crackdown doesn't have a single design for the agent. He's a genetically-enhanced super-soldier, and can switch to any number of pre-made skins. He has no voice, he has no choice. He doesn't need to be distinctive or dynamic in his design. However, it was a waste to do a cel-shading-sque art design for the world and characters and make the main character look the way he does, IMO. I'm not saying he should have been in spandex, but his "bio armor" design is very generic.

For some reason, I'm not suprised that nobody tried to defend Vaan. I think he is universally known as a horrible character.

Horrid design. Also, I can't understand why Final Fantasy XII prominently features characters who think they have to armor their legs up to ridiculous degrees and yet they have little or no covering on their torso. It's like their vital organs are in their legs. Horrid design. It's already happene

There are far better reasons not to play DKC3. This comes from somebody who really likes DKC and *loves* DKC2.

If you base your game playing/buying decisions just on the character designs, you're undoubtedly missing out on a lot of good games.

Fire Emblem Reject aka Rush doesn't look like a great design to me either. However, at least he looks like a character that could actually have depth.

CRAZY OLD BLOODY GUY is the character we're supposed to like because we're Americans, and Americans love their red meat and ultraviolence, you know.

I'd like to note also that COBG's red coat makes for a great way for an archer to keep a bead on him if he was trying to skewer him with an arrow. That's the kind of stuff that kills me--when a design for a character seems to fly in the face of what they're supposed to be good at. I'm not saying every hero should be decked out in camo of some sort, but *something that isn't completely idiotic* would be nice.

My mom was playing Cooking Mama on the DS and couldn't figure out why she kept failing a recipe (it was one of the "blowing" ones). Parents playing video games = priceless.

Oh, and since I just assume this would be the place to say it, happy belated birthday, AndrewTS.

Yeah, I was going to start a thread in General Chat, but Andrewdoesn't seem to post much outside of this forum. I sent him a PM, though.

If Wii doesn't get Accent Core, I'll be a sad guy. A sad panda :(

Well, it's officially confirmed for Japan. Aksys has been rumored to be the American publisher, to which they have basically stated "We have nothing to announce at this time," even though Gamefly has a July release date listed. Aksys, I believe, is made up primarily of former Atlus staffers.

While Guilty Gear on Wii has the motion control thing going on, it also supports the Classic Controller, for sane people. I hope it supports the Gamecube controller, so I can use my joystick.

Edit: Here's Aksys's site.

That type of marketing only works when it is well known enough what it is supposed to represent. A bunch of passerbys will see it wondering what IV is, possibly Godfather IV or something equally stupid. They won't even notice the R* logo on it. Same thing with the Halo 3 ads I see everwhere. I look and I think it could be an ad for Predator 3 or something.

The more I look at the pic, the more I think the pic is fake.

In other news, I preordered Scarface for the Wii on a horrible impulse. Did I make a bad mistake?

The bolded part is the point of the marketing. It's to make people wonder what is coming, think about it, keep it in their heads. Then closer to the release of the game, they do other ads in the same style that are more blatant.

DrVenkman, how did you fake that picture? It doesn't look shopped, I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my day. Did you ask some people from Chinatown to paint the side of that building so you could take the picture?

You got it GQ. I saw a building in Chinatown in NYC with nothing on it, asked some people selling Shrek 3 on DVD to paint me a big picture and bam, big ol fake GTA IV ad.

AVGN on the 32X is incredibly funny and informative. I had no idea that thing required separate cables AND it's own power source. I just assumed it worked like Sonic and Knuckles.

I knew that pic had to be faked. From somebody who created a few fakes a while back, I could tell by looking at the text. The "Coming Soon" and website text looked like they weren't interacting with the building correctly.

Ok just to recap the conversation between WWM and I that was subtely pointing out that I took the picture - I TOOK THE PICTURE. The building is on Canal in NYC street with that big ass painted on ad. I had no idea taking a picture of something video game related (but fairly irrelevant) I found interesting and sharing it would open up such a bag of worms. Way to go, 108 posts.

I thought your previous post was you admitting the pic was fake. Maybe my reading comprehension is poor, but you said it was a fake ad.
