"Titus" on DVD

I remember when this used to come on after "That 70s Show".

I loved this show, but as usual, Fox dicked around and moved it around on the schedule and started showing epsidoes out of order so you'd have no clue what was going on.

Its basically the misadventures of a garage owner, his nuerotic (but hot) girlfriend, his skirt-chasing alcoholic father, his effeminate best friend, and his dumb-as-a-post brother. Stories were told through a combination of childhood flashbacks, black and white naration (which was usually recylced material from Christopher Titus's real-life stand-up routine), and interaction with the other regulars, and lots of jokes about drinking.

Fantastic show. It's only problem was making Titus a car detailer. Not to me, but for the general audience. That show could've developed an "Arrested Development"-like following, although to a lesser extent, if he had almost any other kind of occupation. Probably sounds ridiculous, and it is, but those crowds don't flock to shows with a "manly" background.

I already went through Disc 1 from Netflix. I'll eventually get the rest. I did download all of Season 3 a while back.

My friend Petone got it the other day, and he's almost done with it. Titus was a hilarious, hilarious show, and I haven't actually watched anything on Fox since it was cancelled (mostly because that was the only show I felt was worth watching on Fox).

Fucking executives and their wanting control over Titus' project...

This show was pretty cool.  Wasn't Titus's dad a complete dick or something?

He was an alcoholic and compulsive womanizer with multiple ex-wives.

They did an episode where the characters asked him to start drinking again because no one could stand him when he was sober.

Oh yeah, I remember that episode.

Please elaborate.

The reason the show was cancelled was because Christopher Titus owned the rights to it, and Fox wanted him to make it into more of a flat-out sitcom instead of the "should I really be laughing at this?" kind of show it was. How over-the-top his mom was during his memories of her in later episodes? That was all Fox right there, as Titus wanted to make the show as close to his real life as possible (which, judging from his stand-up shows, it actually was).

They wanted his mother even MORE over the top? Sheesh.

I know when they yanked the show it had multiple episodes unaired (which eventually were shown during the following summer with little advertisement)...I figured it was because of ratings.

I forgot about this set until I saw it mentioned last Thursday night on another forum. I went out to get it the next day.

I loved the show when it was first aired. It was one of a series of different, but great comedies that Fox had going for two or three seasons. The main characters are all funny, especially Ken and Dave. The "should I really be laughing at this?" description fits pretty well for a lot of the recurring themes. Infidelity, lots of drinking and drugs, mental illness, mental abuse, poor physical health, etc. It does feel awkward laughing at some of it, but no moreso than you would when watching South Park.

I have no idea why they stuck 33 episodes on 6 discs, when they could've managed 5 or maybe even 4. Disc 2 can't even be half full, with only 4 episodes on it, and no extras. You'd think they'd try to save money, when it's not even Fox releasing the set.

Maybe they want people to think "wow, look at the six disk set...wow I'm getting a lot of disks for your money" when they see it in the store. Maybe it only costs them a few cents to produce each disk.

I truly loved the first season of the show, although I felt it slipped a bit in the second season. It didn't help that Fox was continually moving it around and making it impossible for me to catch it. This is a show I'd definitely consider picking up on TiVo, or at least renting from Netflix, at some point.

Yeah, but that's a silly reason to toss in extra discs, and add to the development cost.

The way the third disc is labeled(in the DVD menu, at least) as "Season 2, Disc 1" makes me think that originally they were planning on releasing the two seasons seperately.

Who was his best friend? I remember everyone else.

Tommy, the one that Ken always called a homo but was actually just an effeminate straight guy. I think he eventually got a girlfriend, but I'm not so sure.

My favorite Tommy moment was the episode where Titus and Dave meet Tommy's father, find out he's gay, and later in the episode Tommy's dad is beaten up. At the bar where he was beaten up, these two rednecks are in there talking about how proud they are for roughing up a gay guy, so Titus and Dave go to start with them, and are about to get their asses kicked when Tommy goes all Bruce Lee on the two rednecks with a pool cue.

That was MINT.

That's because it wasn't really situated as a cancelation. It was still on the air, if I remember correctly, when FOX announced its plans for the following season. So while it didn't return the next season, it didn't abruptly disappear like those bastards did with Boston Public a year later.
