CanadianGuitarist Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 I need this settled. I referred to a meal I had today around 3 as supper. I got my bluff called on it, but I feel that supper is the main, or most memorable, meal of the day. I was argued against, that supper was nothing more than a synonym for dinner. Thoughts?
Guest *KNK* Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 My best meal of the day is lunch. Supper=Dinner.
Guest Fook Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 KNK is right on all counts. But a meal eaten at 3pm is neither lunch nor supper. It's kind of a "lupper" in the same vain as brunch.
treble Posted August 4, 2005 Report Posted August 4, 2005 If I'm eating at 3, it's going to be lunch, since I probably couldn't go the rest of the day without eating anything else, even if it was something small.
Guest Undertow Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Possibly could be called a Mid-Afternoon heavy snack. Or Linner I guess.
CanadianGuitarist Posted August 5, 2005 Author Report Posted August 5, 2005 But, let's use last Saturday as an example. A co-worker and I went for lunch. The Plaice's mix and match, a platter of fingers, wings and fries, along with 6 beers between the two of us. That's a hell of a lot more memorable than the can of whatever I ate for dinner alone in my apartment 7 hours later. Can't I call the Plaice excursion supper?
MrRant Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Because the dictionary says you can't. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=supper You didn't have dinner first nor have this mean before bed.
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 So supper is dinner, and dinner is lunch.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Dinner is whatever you want to call it. I've had early afternoon dinners before, especially if it's Thanksgiving and I'm going over to the in-laws...
CanadianGuitarist Posted August 6, 2005 Author Report Posted August 6, 2005 Dinner is whatever you want to call it. I've had early afternoon dinners before, especially if it's Thanksgiving and I'm going over to the in-laws... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So if you had dinner in the early afternoon, what did you have at the in-laws? Tick tock, tick tock, I may be a winner. If not, gimme this one anyway. I'm on my ninth brew of the evening and it's occuring to me that I suck at arguing. Actual conversation between me and Red BAron 51 one day: Me: I may go into politics one day. RB: Nope, you're a pushover. Me: yeah, you're eright, I am.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 That ticking is the sound of the bomb about to go off in your computer...
Slayer Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 Call it whatever the fuck you want to call it and fuck convention When I worked overnights I would sometimes call my first meal (eaten at 6PM) breakfast and my last meal (5AM) dinner just to confuse people, although usually I would just say "I'm gonna eat" and not attach a title to my meal
Corey_Lazarus Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 It depends upon your schedule of sleep, really. If you woke up at, say, 11 PM to work at midnight? Then what could traditionally be called a "midnight snack" would be breakfast. What is "breakfast" would be your lunch, and what is "lunch" would be your dinner/supper. Supper is just another synonym for dinner, not the most memorable meal of the day.
