This Week In College Football 9/1 - 9/5

Vince Young seems to have found a passing game last night but I mean it was ULL.

I am pimping Iowa as well. When we made our picks in the paper they were my Rose Bowl pick.

That's the thing that sucks about the current system. Teams that play in a "major" conference where they have no legitimate competition get rewarded for looking impressive whereas teams that actually play a difficult schedule, facing three or four legitimate contenders in their conference slate get hammered.

I'd say that the year where USC was left out of the title game in favor of LSU and Oklahoma was about the only instance in recent memory where a team actually got punished for playing jobbers all year.

I have Iowa with at least three losses this year.

Michigan they will lose, it'll cost em the share of the Big Ten. Ohio State game they will lose, not by much but they will. And I had them losing to Illinois as well as Northwestern.

Don't ask me, I've just not been sold on them. I fully admit I am probably going to be 100% wrong on them though.

I think Auburn might have something to say about that. Unless you don't consider the god damn Citadel a jobber.

Well then if Texas Tech somehow runs the table and goes undefeated all year long which isn't likely but I'm just using it as an example I think they'd be left out over a one loss team from another conference just because they play the worst non-conference schedule like ever.

Is this a suprise year? Is someone nobody ever guessed going to make a run?

Oh and btw even if they do drop out of the Top 15( they won't drop out fo the Top 20) I think beating OU will still hold a lot of weight for any team that takes them down this year. I mean it should propel TCU forward into the Top 25.

It's like the school yard bully has fallen down and everyone is lining up to take their shots. Ok Big XII...take your shots......because we're going to get back up next year and the year after and you won't like that very much!!!! Rebuilding years suck. We're just not used to it in Oklahoma under Bob Stoops. Seems how it's been a wild ride his entire tenure here.

What I think is funny is that everyone went on about what a loser Jason White was (ESPN and this board)and now that he's not at OU everyone is saying that's the main reason they suck.

Dennis Franchione is a fucking moron for not going for 2...

Amen, brother. I know the coaches have their little scenarios on charts, but there is no situation that says its a good idea. Even if they just go for the two and miss and score another TD they are still up by 8, putting the pressure on Clemson to score and make the 2.

Not me, OU sucks because they have an offensive line that might struggle to start for the Norman Pop Warner football team.

Thompson is not a bad quarterback, he's just bad for what they have around him. Thompson needs a short gain offense with a hard pounder ground game. What he has is a weak offensive line with a finesse back that forces him to stretch the field. If they plan to run this offense, they need to switch quarterbacks now.

Yeah the line is horrendous. They aren't blocking for Peterson at all.

Thompson had a couple of times where he had a hole to run through but he just stood there looking for an open reciever. I blame this all on Chuck Long who is just a horrible play caller and I think he's trying to make Paul Thompson into Jason White and we know he's nowhere close to White.

But they claim that Rhett Bomar is the best pure passer they've ever had as a freshman. So they need to stick him in there and let the kid get some time and show us those passing skills he's supposed to have.

And they need to develop a passing game for Peterson to ever get anything. If they just try to pound it with Peterson and that line then Peterson will be dead by the time Texas rolls around.

Two of the three major conference teams with no losses going into the bowl season last year already have losses in the first week

This may be a different football season.

Or it'll just be USC with everyone else playing for second.

I agree, we're a fucking embarrassment to humanity. At least U of L held on for the win or else you guys would get the total meltdown I promised yesterday. Jesus, should have beaten UK 55-10 or so.

You know I feel dirty saying this but UK really isn't that bad. I think the switch to Joker Phillips as offensive coordinator has helped a lot. Maybe that tough effort vs. Tennessee last year was no fluke?

I am so not sold on Brohm, wasn't last year when he was in the game. Everyone in town thinks the guy is the 2nd coming but if he's as good as his brother Jeff I'd be surprised.

I'm jazzed for the game tomorrow night. That'll really show me that football's back, to see Miami and Florida State in a nationally televised game.

That and when Tennessee plays Florida.

Today's Louisville/Kentucky game was Kentucky football personified.

I'm a grad student at UK and I've been watching UK football the past several years.

Today, Woodson, our QB, fumbled on UL's 2 yard line when we were down by 7 in the 4th after a huge comeback.

You don't know how many times things like this have happened in UK football history. So many *almost* upsets.

I was one of the douchebags on the field when LSU threw that hail mary that was the ESPY play of the year.

I was there when our fat, lovable QB Jared Lorenzen threw the INT against Florida in the 4th.

I stayed up late and watched the super-long, multi-overtime game--I think it was the longest game ever--which we lost to Arkansas.

This is life as a UK football fan. It ain't glamorous, but there's something noble about it.

BTW... Thanks to you and your fellow fans at UK, smitty. That took an absolute disaster of a game by Marcus Randall and made it a freakin' highlight of his career.

haha, that sucked...but we've long since gotten used to such things here

I'm a U of L alum and even I was outraged over that LSU game. I was absolutely screaming at them for calling that idiotic timeout instead of running it down for the FG to end it. The irony is that I KNEW LSU would do that.

I...I don't know what to think of this game today. Maybe it'll take Brohm and Co. a couple games to gel. Thing is, we better get our act together in the next 2 weeks because Oregon St. is coming to Papa John's and they are most likely better than friggin UK.

Dama, you do realize that Bomar was the #2 recruit in the nation with Adrian Peterson being #1 in 03? I'm starting to wonder if maybe they should just let him start. Yeah, he fumbled that one ball but he needs some time to warm up, not just one set of downs every other quarter. Prima donna or not, if he's that good maybe it's Thompson who should be playing backup.

I'm still undecided on Chuck Long's play calling as OU had several chances to make some good deep plays had Thompson not over thrown his receiver. The bad that I saw was giving it to AD too much when they could see TCU lining up 8 in the box; thompson should have called for a quick screen pass in those situations until they thinned the line enough to give AD some room.

Color me unimpressed by Louisville after that performance. If U of K's quarterback knew how to protect the ball Kentucky might have won that game.

I wouldn't be too worried yet. It's a rivalry game on the road, opening the season to boot.

Coming back yesterday from Pittsburgh, I knew our D-Line would be a question mark, but I didn't think it would look that bad. Hopefully it was a combo Notre Dame's O-Line being that good and Pitt's D-Line just being inexperienced - all four starters had started less the 2 games in their positions while the best player, Thomas Smith, was recovering from knee surgery and did not play until the second half.

Now I have the dilemma of hoping Notre Dame gets killed by Michigan, which will shut up those annoying fans I had to sit near, but that will make Pitt look horrible, or imagine those fans orgasming again if they beat Michigan.

I only caught bits of the Oklahoma game, but the announcers just kept commenting on missed throws to open receivers, throws that Jason White would have made. Since I'm assuming that was the QB's first start, maybe that will be fixed soon and Oklahoma will still have a good season.

I figured Boise State would lose to Georgia decisively, but not that decisively.

I'm a big Michigan fan, as you guys can attest to my sig, but I'll be honest; there's no way they should be Number 4 in the country. This is an extremely overrated team who'll probably lose at least three games this year.

Oh, college football is the stalest sport when it comes to rankings. Every year it is the same old teams on top with no real tourney to ever shake things up. Last year was really the only time where there were some teams that broke into the BCS from nowhere (Utah and Pitt, though Pitt didn't remotely deserve it). Otherwise every year it is the same old Michigan, Ohio St., Tennessee, 3 schools from Florida, etc.

I dunno what U of L was doing in the 2nd half. That goofy missed FG at the end of the 1st half took away the momentum and I'm unclear why. There's 2 weeks to prepare for Oregon St. so hopefully Petrino will iron out the problems. I'd like to see Brohm take a few shots down the field. At least UK did that much yesterday.

I agree to an extent...after being at the game Saturday this is a borderline top 10 team. Northern Illnois is a damn good football team so I am not taking anything away from them, but Michigan has looked just flat out terrible defensively the last 6 games going back into last season. how many times will a zone read run go for big yards on that defense. Will all that talent you would think these kids know how to wrap up and tackle. The staff doesn't use personel correctly. Pierre Woods, Lamar Woodley, and Gabriel Watson should be lined up on the same damn side. Prescott Burgess should not be covering slot recivers. Michigan's offense is going to be amazing but they will lose at least two of these four games: Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa. 10-2 would be a great year for this team especially if they can only lose one game in conference

I know. I'm thinking that Bomar needs to start the next game to show us what he has.

Yeah well AD only got 5 carries in the first half. Yeah I know they were lining up 8 in the box but it's like Mark May said "Adrian Peterson is the best player on the team. Give him the ball."

That sounds like sound logic but then again he was getting murdered by 10 guys everytime he tried to run the football. But still I think if you'd given him the ball a little more before the game became dire then he might've broken a big one like he has done time and time again.

And yeah they were talking about how Jason White would've made those throws and it's true. It's very apparent now that Jason White meant more to the success of this football team than anyone else thought. I heard a lot of people on TSM say "Well anyone could put those numbers up if they were stuck with the team that White had." I know it's not the same team but I think it's being proven that White was a lot better for OU than people give him credit.

And another thing. He had Josh Heupel as a grad assistant to calm him down if he made a mistake on the field. OU needs Jason White back as a grad assistant to talk to these kids and coach them.

Did anyone catch VT/NCState? Not a bad game. Little Vick had one amazing run and was solid in the 2nd half.
