Spike begins the push for Impact

Recommended Posts

Spike just aired a commercial for Impact during Raw. It had a narrator who said "do you like wrestling? well we're giving you more of what you like" or something like that, and then it had clips of TNA (the only one I noticed was from the AMW/XXX Six Sides of Steel). They then showed the TNA logo with the word Impact under it and said coming Oct. 1 at 11 pm. Wow! That one commercial will probably do more to increase awareness about TNA than anything they've done in the past 3 years. So much for this being just like FSN. Hopefully Spike keeeps it up and they pop a great rating for the debut!

PWInsider is reporting that the clip was produced by Spike and not TNA, which is great because it shows Spike is serious about promoting Impact. Here's what he posted:

During one of Raw's commercial breaks, Spike TV ran a 15 second commercial promoting the debut of TNA Impact for 10/1, showing clips of different wrestlers including Sabu and AJ Styles. I was told it was a clip that Spike TV themselves produced and edited, not something that TNA put together.

Spike doesn't care what the WWE thinks or might think - they're leaving in a month anyway. This is the perfect clip to create interest for the product, especially in the timeslot they just plugged it for.

(This is in reply to a question that *will* be asked.)

Spike showed an ad for TNA? Wow, a whole hell of a lot more then they did for ECW.......

Different management now, for one.

Also, with the ECW thing, it was testing the waters to see if wrestling would work.

With TNA, they already know wrestling will work, so they can do more.

...plus, the TNA programming is a bit more...advertiser friendly...than ECW's stuff was.

PWInsider reported that not surprisingly, WWE was unhappy that TNA was advertised to their audience. Here's what Mike Johnson posted:

The word going around at Raw was that the McMahons and company were not at all happy to hear that Spike has started running commercials for TNA on Spike during Raw.  They were said to have understood why Spike did it, since USA has already started running commercials about Raw coming to their network in October, but since they are very proprietrary about their product, they reportedly felt Spike and TNA were trading off of the audience they built.  They would be right in feeling that way, but since Spike has paid them $28 million a year for the last five years, they can't complain too much.  One source close to the situation told me that they were told in advance that the commercials would run and it's very possible that they booked the Matt Hardy vs. Edge match in the hardcore manner that they did in response to it.

On the flip side, a number of WWE wrestlers were happy to see the commercials air and a lot of them hope that TNA getting on Spike can establish a viable competitive promotion for them.  The business certainly needs it.

I about shit my pants when i saw the commercial. But I hope they make a new one to run during RAW. They need to show longer clips of the wrestling, not little flashes of something happening. They need to show like 2 to 3 secs of a cool move(skipper cage walk) to really get people interested.

They need to have TNA make them a commercial that they can run instead of Spike making a shitty one.

The fact Spike took the step and made the commercial on their own was great news for TNA, it clearly shows not only is Spike willing to pay for this but they want to push the product.

Which is good and bad news for TNA, Spike has expecations.

I agree that the fact that Spike took the initative to produce the commercial bodes well for TNA. I'm also positive this was a knee-jerk reaction to USA beginning to promote Raw. The fact that they are reportedly upset at WWE will help TNA as well, as they will want TNA to succeed to thumb their noses at Vince. Anway, I'm sure some longer, TNA produced spots will start showing up soon.

I wouldn't mind at all if these spots were built up. The spot yesterday was to wet the appetite some. Each week leading to Impact's debut they could make the spots longer and more dramatic.

Hell, by the last Raw, I'd love to see a 1-2 minute full on music video "Desire" style right before the Main Event or something. That'd be the way I'd do it.

That would actually be a pretty good idea, having longer clips each week. It wouldn't hurt if they showed other clips highlighting one or two of their stars each commercial, either. I'm sure there are plenty of WWE viewers who are wondering where guys like Nash, Waltman, Jarrett, etc. are these days, and would tune in to see what they're doing....and no, I'm not saying TNA should build around those guys, but they should use them to build some interest.

ECW was essentially an infomerical as they were buying the time to appear on the network and in charge of their own advertising (same arrangment TNA had with FSN), thus TNN had no obligation from a financial standpoint to promote them.

TNA, in what will end up as a major victory for them, got Spike to agree to sell all the advertising time. Which means TNA is regular programming on Spike (they aren't paying for the time) and since Spike is in charge of selling the ad time, they have a financial stake in the show's success and will thus promote it. Big deal for TNA.
