I remember that issue. It really boggled my mind since I thought Austin was the clear #1. They argued that since there was no clear-cut decision for the top spot they would simply give it to the best technical wrestler in the world, hence they gave it to Malenko. From #2 on they used their normal criteria, which is accomplishments for the time period and overall ability.

For this year I don't mind the top spots, but I'm certainly disappointed with the placing they gave Shawn MIchaels. I guess the time when he was injured was a big detriment since it is within the time-period for qualification, but there's no doubt in my mind that if you were to factor his performances for 2005 alone then he's the Wrestler of the Year by far.

Malenko being #1 was awesome. Hey, could Austin go out there and ground a cruiserweight with leg work for 20 mins. and make you LIKE it? I think not.

Not shocking that Batista and Cena are 1 and 2 though. Hell in 1995 Nash was #1 due to his long title run.

The PWI 500 is more sane than their year end awards. Hell, in 1996 The Giant won wrestler of the year even though I can't for the life of me recall much he did beyond a mediocre title run. Even though I didn't care for Shawn Michaels he was easily wrestler of the year in 1996. Ditto Lex Luger in 1997, where did THAT shit come from? His lame 1 week title reign justified him being WOTY over Steve Austin, Bret Hart, etc.

Dean Malenko winning the PWI 500 was great. Dean Malenko became "huge" (well, not physically) in my eyes after that. I remember being initially ticked off Austin didn't win, though.

If one wanted to factor in both in-ring ability and accomplishments, I would imagine that Kojima would be #1. You know, that whole 4-crown thing. But then one has to remember that it's PWI and chuckle a bit. It's essentially for WWE fanboys, and they throw in guys like Kojima or Tenzan to make it appear like they know what they're talking about.

This is so random it's not even funny. Oh, and I think they forgot Chris Hero. At least Darkness Crabtree got on there though.

One other thing to add about Malenko winning...I don't believe Austin had yet been WWF Champion at that point...he had the IC title run, but that wasn't that huge or anything. Malenko had about four title runs that year, IIRC...US, Cruiserweight, I think he held the TV title...Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan had both been sporadic in their defenses, so I believe that was one of the other main reasons Malenko won that year...he had the most accomplishments and most defenses in a US ring.
