Big Ol' Smitty

Thread which doesn't warrant a comment.

TR's imperialist, racist bent bothers me.  But I like his progressive, trust-busting side.

His race stance doesn't earn points with me, but considering the times and how long it took just to get rid of segregation, I don't feel like I can fairly take them away either.

To me, TR is a lot like LBJ--I abhor "half" of his presidency and adore the other half.

What was to be adored about LBJ's presidency?

The Civil Rights Act and Medicaid.

You are wrong.

While Kennedy's murder may have increased public support for his policies, Johnson was the one who actually pushed those measures through.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was not an easy sell to the Congress, as Southern politicians dominated both the House and the Senate during that time period. Johnson strongly believed in the neccesity of the act, and as president bears the bulk of the responsibility for its passage into law.

I have never seen Kennedy's name attached to the creation of Medicaid in 1965.

Sufficed to say, the two measures passed while LBJ was president, and history will remember him as the man responsible for them.

LBJ disgusts me. How anybody could believe in their elected leaders after living through Johnson and Nixon is beyond me. Pathetic men wholly lacking in dignity, integrity, or honor.

Smitty - In his day, would you have picked Goldwater? Hes pretty much the LaFollete of the conservatives.

Probably not, he was pretty much just a straight up Reaganish conservative. And he was a big supporter of Joe McCarthy. He was against the Civil Rights Act of '64.

He seems like a good man and a principled politician, but he's just too far right for me.

You do know Goldwater was not from a racist right?

Yeah, I know, he helped start the NAACP in his state.

Also, LBJ=war on poverty, which I like.

Goldwater was a libertarian.

While he disapproved of racism, he basically didn't feel the government had the authority to tell people they had to treat blacks equally.

Roberts stated expressly and unequivocally that he accepted and agreed, without reservation, that the Constitution does recognize a right to privacy. He mentioned specifically privacy rights emanating from the 1st, 3rd and 4th Amendments and the liberty interests recognized and protected by the due process clause of the 5th and 14th Amendments.

Rockin~!

Johnson also had a hard-on for the casket industry...

I assumed that. For me, with the dirtiness of his campaigning and his exploitation of Kenedy's ideals for votes, that destruction of an American Generation makes Johnson among the very worst Presidents in our history.

Goldwater felt that new federal laws could not eradicate pepoles personal racism. It was something that would require social pressure towards full real change in the minds of people. In retrospect, he was correct considering the extant of racism that still exists today. He knew full well that the Act would pass which allowed him to vote 'no' on principle. Unfortunately the media of the day didnt bother covering other stories like how Goldwater refused to stay in segregated hotels while campaigning in the Deep South.

And he really became quite the libertarian in his later days..."As long as theyre not hurting nobody they can be as gay as they want to be."

Weird note...I think I heard that Goldwater's tax plan had like a 95% rate at the highest income brackets. More progressive taxation than even the most raging of liberals today.

And point taken on LBJ. He was a decidedly underhanded politician, but he did hold some real liberal values, I think, and his War on Poverty, well, reduced poverty a lot.

My favorite Nixon quotes:

1.)"cookie pushers and faggots in striped pants", referring to the Peace Corps and the State Dept. Foreign Service

2.) When asked something along the lines of "what about the poor?" Nixon responded "fuck the [poor]"

He didn't use the word poor, something like "left behind" or "less fortunate". I can't find the quote.

As far as domestic politics go, I kinda like Nixon. EPA, cost-of-living increases for Social Security, etc.

Nixon could almost be a sympathetic figure based on 1960 and before if he wasn't such a fucking bastard.

Nixon also moved away from the liberal-Republican side to help Goldwater in 1964 which showed true loyalty. He also can be given some credit for eventually seeing the end of the Vietnam War.

Its too bad that the pathetic addiction for power and the bad shadow it left will always trump whatever achievements Nixon and LBJ may have had. And they both had landslide presidential election victories over qualified, honest opponents...shame on voting America in '64/'72.

The 1950 California election for US Senate was a text-book example of a smear campaign. And it wasn't Helen Gahagan doing the smearing, either.

Next question: if you had your druthers, who would be your candidate for Prez in '08?

Russell Feingold, I choose you!

Obama would be a close second.

Wesley Clark=a distant third
