Has anybody seen this before?  Frank Cant.  reaches on an error bluff towards second base posada throws the ball to Giambi and he tags out Frank Cant and the umpire calls him out for motioning towards second as he stumbled while running up the first base line.

Yes actually. You can overrun first base, but if you motion towards second, you are an active baserunner.

I know al, what I meant is has anybody ever seen it happen before in a game?

One time several years ago. Willie McGee was in his final stint with the Cardinals, and beat out an infield hit. The opposing team protested, saying McGee had turned towards second after the play. Replays should McGee did, but the umps called him safe. It was a quick, barely discernable turn, but according to the rules McGee committed.

1st and 3rd, no out, and the A's don't score. Pretty much sums up the season right there. Barring a 9th inning comeback their season is done as they aren't sweeping the Angels in four games.
