Jack Mckeon retired after yesterdays game. The first to get fired is Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers.

The Trammel firing was idiotic, unless there are issues we don't know about. The guy improves by 29 games in one season and gets canned?

Lou Piniella is the other guy you're thinking of, Czech.

God couldn't have even made the tigers into a contender with their atrocious pitching. its dombrowski's fault for not landing a top pitcher. he dropped all of his money into two broken down has-beens; one of which may never play again.

He got nothing out of his team. They improved by default. You can't help but improve on 119 wins. They also made no improvements between this season and last season.

The staff didn't underachieve, outside of Bonderman it just isn't any good. They gave a big money deal to Percival which was a complete waste, big money to Magglio Ordonez who missed half the year, Carlos Guillen was injured most of the season, and Pudge misses the roids.

Trammell got a raw deal

They were right around .500 for the first half of the season, which was about as good as this group was ever going to get. The second half, they players got hurt and/or reverted back to form. This team should have easily lost 105 games, but didn't.

The blame for the Tigers needed to be laid right on the GM's doorstep.

Fine. Fire the GM. Blow the whole damn thing up, and start over in Detroit.

Many baseball people believe Nate Robertson has terrific stuff. Johnson's a career underachiever. They pitching staff sure has hell is good enough to be in the Top half of the AL in ERA.

Why are people making excuses for Trammel? What has he done? Why did his team quit on him this year? Hell, why did they lose 119 games. I don't care how bad you, that many loses is inexcusable. He should of been shown the door after a year.

well firing trammel for jim leyland makes sense. but if the end getting some unproven hack, it won't make sense. there has to be a reason why the tigers quit at the end of the year, maybe it was trammel's fault. i'd suggest trading pudge. get some quality pitching. they really don't need much more on offense. granderson looked great the end of the year, & craig monroe is well on his way to being a solid 20+ man. carlos pena, if he could get on base more, would be a solid 1b he went crazy there for a few weeks hitting home runs left & right. pitching is the problem. offense is fine. i think they could get some solid players from several teams for pudge, although they'd have to eat some of his contract. but money doesn't seem to be an issue for the tigers anymore. dombrowski should be canned this summer, too...but it won't happen.

bonderman is the only starter who should stick around.

The Red Wings are back on the ice, so Illitch should be back to not giving a damn about the Tigers. And I figured Pittsburgh wanted Leyland, though I can't imagine he'd return to managing with a team that has Bay, the Wilsons, Mackowiak, and not much else.

The Tiger can opt out of the Magglio contract if they wish; it had a clause where they got the option after the first year if he didn't play more than 120 games.

So, one contract out the window.

Leyland lives in Pittsburgh, and might just want to manage again. Not caring at this point how much talent he has.

As far as the Tigers' GM goes, I don't think he can be fully blamed for the team either. He received a poor team with a dismal farm team. He decided to let the kids play in 2003 and it blew up. But now the team has Bonderman, and two terrific starters coming up in Joel Zumaya and Justin Verlander. He traded Ramon Santiago and got Carlos Guillen in return and flipped Ugueth Urbina for Placido Polanco, giving the Tigers a heck of a middle infield.

As for Trammell, I think the team was coming apart internally, and given that he has no prior managerial experience, no track record of success, three consecutive 90+ loss seasons, and was really a "feel good" hire in the first place, it may be time to look in a new direction.

Every time I hear Leyland's name I get the mental image of when he was shouting (albeit happily) at Florida fans like a crazy old man when Florida won the '97 WS

He's looked the same for 20 years....

And wow, I was shocked to see he's going to manage THE TIGERS, when Al said ESPN had him up I just assumed it was for the Pirates job. I take back my dis on the Trammell firing, this is clearly a major upgrade.
