Avery's not being a villian the right way. There are a few ways to do it:

1- Be a Claude Lemieux-esque villian. Score timely goals against hated rivals, start blood feuds, be a total bastard on the ice...but be someone that as a fan, you'd want on your team. If Lemieux were ever on the Bruins, I'd cheer for him.

2- Be a Scott Stevens-esque villian. Get huge hits that determine outcomes of series, not just games. Be one of the most feared physical players in the NHL.

But insulting a black player with slurs isn't the way to do anything but get your ass handed to you. I don't know if Avery is just trying to act like a badass, but I know one thing. Sean Avery is listed as 5'10", 185. I'm barely bigger than he is. Georges Laraque goes at 6'3", 240. If I were Sean Avery, I'd try to stick to someone within my weight class.

I like Avery style of play, but I would not have him on my team though.

Montreal is retiring three more numbers, though no one knows which ones. I'm suggesting Larry Robinson, Ken Dryden and out on a limb Boom Boom Geffrion.

Max, you'd really root for Claude? I hated him enough that even if he had become a B, I still wouldn't have been able to root for him. He's one of three players that are beyond liking (Brashear is one, and Ulfie is obviously the third). Roenick's quickly become someone that's near that list, too.

Claude's an asshole, but he's an extremely dangerous player when it matters, which is what the Bruins need more of. Sometimes his game can be too dirty, but I think things would change if he were doing that in a black and gold sweater.

I was going to make the joke that the B's don't last long enough in the postseason for him to do what he does best (score big goals in the playoffs) ... but the obvious rebuttal is that if they had someone that scored those big goals, they'd go deeper.

Still, I'd have a hard-ass time rooting for a player like him.

Wait, on a team with Hal Gill & PJ Axelsson, you'd pick Joe as your least favorite Bruin?!? I can understand that he hasn't lived up to the expectations, but he's better than that 6'7" statue that waves at forwards as they race passed him towards the net.

Joe's stature is why I don't like him more than Gill/PJ. Joe is supposed to be the guy who leads the team, Gill is a lumbering goof, PJ is a loser. Joe was drafted for the specific purpose of being a franchise cornerstone and he's looked/acted like one for exactly one season.

I'm starting to feel like the Penguins are going to overtime EVERY GAME.

They seemed like they were getting their asses kicked, being completely outclassed for a period and a half against the Flyers. I'm talking about getting pushed around and looking absolutely slow as hell (which is amazing, considering their players) and overmatched. But, after falling behind 5-1, they come back with four goals (including a bizarre, fluky one from Talbot to tie it) and then a little help from the save of the year thusfar from Sebastian Caron to force OT. We'll see what happens now, but this is insane. Hopefully they can win their first.

Crosby has 1+1, too.

I need to see the highlights of this Leafs/Thrashers game from Atlanta. 9-1 Leafs win (with 7 goals on the PP), but I guess there was a huge brawl in the 3rd after someone smashed Tucker into the boards.

The Marlies game is on TV, though!

I hate Ulfe and Stevens and Claude as a Hockey fan as much as I hate Avery. Who am I to say that what Avery does is more or less evil and morally wrong than what Claude does. I just hate them all.

^ There is literally no player in NHL history that I hate more than Ulf. Not even close.

/and I mean literally in the accurate definition of the word. Not the way Gorilla Monsoon used it.

According to the headline on TSN.ca, Brett Hull is going to retire today. He was always one of my favourite players, so it sucks to see him go, but I hope he catches on with either CBC or TSN as an analyst, since he's been awesome whenever he's been on between periods before.

I'm feeling good about the Leafs so far this year. Ottawa's really beating up almost everyone else they play, and the Leafs took them to 2 shootouts before losing, plus their only regulation loss was by 1 goal to a Montreal team that hasn't lost on the road yet. And 3 straight wins in nice, too, especially 2 of them against good teams like Philly and the Habs. Hopefully they can keep it up and Belfour stays healthy, since they probably don't win tonight without him.

I'm a huge sports fan who was never into the NHL until the strike. I've tried watching random games on OLN along with Ducks and Kings games on FSN West, but I can't follow the action, don't know the rules, and can't get interested in the game. What am I missing here? I want to like hockey. :(
