The WWE taking a staff member from another Fed/Company does not mean they fear that company.

Correct.

He's doing it to fuck with the other company. UFC and/or TNA do not strike fear in Vince and WWE. At least not yet.

Wow. Weird choice. Goldberg is not even that good of an MMA broadcaster. Despite having the gig for years, he demonstrates, at best, a superficial knowledge of MMA. He is shiiling constantly, going on and on about how great the UFC athletes are, how fantastic the fight is, how great the sportsmanship is, and the refs.. my god the refs. You would think the refs are finding the cure for cancer every time they stop a fight, the way they are praised by Goldberg.

So, I don't expect him to be anything more than a passable PBP guy. He's just a corporate type guy that you could plug into any announcing gig. He's also not particularly young or good-looking which is what I thought WWE was primarly concerned with. This is nothing more than an attempt to stick it to UFC. The funny thing is, it could end up being a great thing for UFC if it moves them to hire Quadros, who has a tremendous knowledge of the sport and has a geniune enthusiasm for it.

Thats a point you really cant back up. Vince needed a PBP announcer, he got one. Is it a little suspect that he came from UFC definitely? Most definitely, but hey a replacement had to come from somewhere. You could leave it at that but instead you're stating things that you cant possibly know are true for sure.

It's going to take a long-time for Goldberg to pick up wrestling, because it took a long time for him to get a handle on announcing UFC to a point where he was decent. Meltzer said an insane amount of money, which makes it a sitck_it_to_em move rather than a smart move. And I'd be really surprised if they don't hype up a Jim Ross Retirement on RAW and just switch announce teams like that, especially if Goldberg has zippo in terms of experience with moves, characters, storylines, etc...

If Quadros gets hired by UFC, all the better for them.

How exactly do you do play by play with zero knowledge of the sport? He will not know how to call moves, he won't know the wrestlers or their motivation. I just don't see this being that good of a move, regardless of what he meant to UFC.

I doubt they'd offer an "insane amount of money" to a guy with zero pro-wrestling experience and doesn't follow the sport and offer to put him on immediately unless they were trying to stick it to the UFC. There are a ton of more qualified guys around who would have taken a good amount of cash to go and could work in there immediately.

From what I remember. The Wild where the one's that didn't renew Goldberg's contract. Could be is MMA work interfered. Not really sure. I do remember him appearing on a local radio show, still does from time to time. After he was let go, it didn't sound like it was his decision.

WWE taking Goldberg only looks like a "stick it to them" move to me...

He's not a very good looking guy, he's not that qualified, and he doesn't have the voice that you want from a commentator.

Plus, there's a bunch of desperate sports announcers out there who are better, and would jump at the opportunity.

Mike Goldberg has always reminded me of Scott Hudson.

Actually Brian, there are qualified guys who would take probrably less money than what Goldberg was offered to work WWE.

As far as knowing and not knowing for sure whether or not WWE is trying to stick it to UFC, no, I don't have concrete evidence. I don't have a recording of Vince saying so on tape or anything, but given the facts presented and knowing Vince's mindset for when he percieves a war, it's an educated guess. I'm positive 98% of the posters have posted similar arguments on other topics with even less evidence.

Well, I was just saying they could offer someone good money rather than "insane" money and get them for less.

Know more than ever they need a good analyst. I'd say let Lawler, be an actual analyst instead of the horny old man act. Don't know if he's capable, but it's worth trying. If he's not, than get someone who takes their job seriously.

Posted

Probably Lawler, knowing people in the business and how wrapped up they get in their gimmicks and kayfabe, has his style of announcing and personality ingrained into the way he is.

Posted

I know Lawler can be different, but I don't think WWE wants him to be different. Whether Lawler wants to be different is insignificant because it's what the 'E' wants, and if they want a horny old man character instead of more of a straight analyst, then that's what Lawler is going to provide.

Remember, WWE is into characters, not people.

So more reason to think signing Mike Goldberg is nothing more than a slap in the face to UFC.

If according to Vince they don't consider the UFC to be competition, why exactly are they planning to take one of their announcers?

WWE logic is funny.

The WWE taking a staff member from another Fed/Company does not mean they fear that company.

It is not a matter of fear. It is a matter of spite.

Over on Sherdog many are rejoicing now Goldie is going, as it means we may get Eddie Bravo on commentary who is more than capable of commentating on groundwork. As long as he can get the fighters names right this name, we'll be better off without Goldberg.

Brian basically said what I was going to. You don't offer someone with no previous experience in the field an "insane" amount of money for the Hell of it.

I do hope this means Quadros gets work, since Pride seems to have no interest in reuniting him with Bas

As far as I can remember, FSN reassigned him, no idea to what, but he has guest hosted best damn sports show multiple times.

from Meltzer:

An interesting note, while hyping Monday, they had a commercial building the show around Vince McMahon saying he's going to fire someone. I guess it's not hard to speculate on that one.

Bye Bye JR.

I just wonder what the cause will be? Did Ross say something on the previous show towards vince?

Or is this one of those "Vince McMahon goes nuts" deals?

You can pretty much say that about the last group of guys that the E has hired to call matches cept for Josh Matthews. It's pretty well known that the last thing they look for is someone that knows wrestling.

Austin stunned Vince and his family. Since J.R. is Austin's buddy, he'll probably use that to get back at him.

It won't be the first, second or third time JR was publically "fired" and he always came back. I doubt it'll get a big reaction.

Why not have J.R. "retire"?

I figured he would retire after Kane set him on fire.

Or at least he would have finally hung up the cowboy hat when Eric Bischoff smashed a cinderblock on his skull.

The guy is resilient...Sooner Tough, if you will.

Does anyone remember these great sports entertainment momentz?

But, what if OU beats Texas again?

Where will we get our constant references to it during a wrestling program?

Joey Styles is a character. He's entertaining. He knows wrestling. He can sell a PPV. He was the star of One Night Stand. But they can't offer him enough to walk away from his day job?
