2005-2006 MLB Offseason thread

Recommended Posts

Dodgers are interested in Delgado and Pierre both. I had previously read - unrelated to this- that they were planning on trading some of their prospects for proven talent.

Time to raid the best farm system in baseball.

The Marlins will be contenders again in no longer than 3 years if they can get the right prospects out of this. They already had one of the best farm systems in baseball in the pitching department and now they are only getting stronger.

I *guess* I like this trade, but hearing Beckett has shoulder problems scares me a bit.  I'm glad they didn't put Lester in there, at least.

It was just tendonitis though.

According to an ESPN article Josh Beckett is excited and he said that Mike Lowell was extremely happy after recieving the phone call.

Does anyone know anything about Jim Fregosi besides that he's real old?

Fregosi managed the 1979 California Angels to an AL West championship and won a National League pennant with the 1993 Phillies. In his latest stint, he posted two above .500 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays.

I'm staying out of the rumor talk.  Let me just say that Jojima is a potential STEAL for the Seattle Mariners.  Great signing.

What kind of drop-off do you think Jojima will have? Let's be honest, there hasn't been a single Japanese import (that I know of) to even approach the greatness they achieve in their home country.

Besides Ichiro? I'm not quite adept at translating statistics. I can tell you that Johjima hit .338 this season with a .655 slugging percentage. He's hit 30 home runs three of the last four years. It'll take a significant drop-off for him to produce less than the other free agent catchers.

Well, while Ichiro didn't have a huge dropoff, it was significant. His career line in Japan is .353/.421/.522, and he averaged about 17 HR and 28 SB a season. In MLB, it's .332/.377/.442 with an average of 11 HR and 39 SB a season. It also needs to be taken into consideration, that, on average, Ichiro has played about thirty-five games more per season in MLB than in the Japanese leagues.

You're right, though; Jojima's Japanese stats are nothing short of astounding.

oh, and Manny isn't playing another game in Boston

Link

One of baseball's most fearsome offensive duos in 2005 — Red Sox's David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez — appears to be history.

According to Ortiz, "Manny is not returning to Boston."

"Manny is living through a difficult situation (in Boston) that only he and his family know and he no longer wants to play there," said Ortiz after arriving early Monday in the Dominican Republic.

Ramirez has asked for a trade in each of his five seasons with the Red Sox, but apparently this one is definite.

"I spoke with him last week before he left for Brazil and he told me that he wants to go to a team in the West," Ortiz, the Red Sox's designated hitter, said.

Ramirez has three years worth $160 million remaining on his contract and eight seasons with the Red Sox. Because of his status as a player with 10 seasons in the major leagues and five with the same team, he is allowed to approve any trade.

"I found out that that they are doing everything possible to trade him," Ortiz said.

The Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim have been named as a possible destination for Ramirez, as well as the New York Mets.

He's only owed $57mill on that contract. Obviously the editor for that site was out to lunch. Fact remains, Beckett is a very good pick up but the team is going to have to find another power hitter this off-season too along with filling their other needs.

he's said he will not show up to Spring Training for the Red Sox...which means the Red Sox don't pay him.

He should come back, act all happy then just sit in left field on the ground picking blades of grass. Or just take a nap. It'll be great.

There's to fucking up the farm system just as I said. Bullshit. Why can't they just try to sign Konerko?

Dodgers should take a step back. They have alot of money invested in crap.

broken down JD Drew

Drunken man whore Derek Lowe

Old firehead Jeff Kent

Inconsistent Odalis Perez

Weird arm problems and Milk pusher Brad Penny

I think that's all of them. Gagne gets a pass. Still, with the Dodgers farm system if they held a fire sale and got good prospects near ML ready then they could be a serious contender in 07. Especially in the crappy NL West.

They already have enough prospects, that's one thing that worries me. Management sees that and they think it's time to make deals.

So what you are saying then is.... a full season of Lenny Dykstra = Wins?

Sounds silly, but look at his playing record. The Mets won 100 games twice with Dykstra in center field. They traded him in '89, and went in the tank after the next year. In Philly Dykstra was constantly injured, but in the one year he played 161 games, the team won the pennant. Dykstra was an amazing player, but he couldn't stay healthy.

I'm tired of "manny being manny"...this is EVERY YEAR with him. If they do trade him, they better get someone real good to fill his spot, or Ortiz is getting walked all season long.

there's a guy on the ESPN Red Sox board that is a long time user and doesn't float around crap saying he heard a rumor via the radio of...

Mets get Manny Ramirez

Marlins get Lastings Milledge, Yuisermo Petit, and Aaron Heilman

Red Sox get Juan Pierre and Carlos Delgado

makes sense for all teams involved and Minaya doesn't mind throwing prospects around as if they were nothing.

Christ. If that's true, Minaya's no better than Steve Phillips.

Carlos Delgado could be on his way to the Mets for Yusmeiro Petit

DELGADO TRADE 'COULD HAPPEN QUICKLY'

By KEVIN KERNAN

CARLOS DELGADO

November 23, 2005 -- A year later, the Mets are close to landing slugger Carlos Delgado, and ex-Yankee Alfonso Soriano again is on their radar screen as Omar Minaya tries to add some punch to a lineup that finished 15th in on-base percentage in the National League.

The fire sale is on in Florida, and it appears the Mets are ahead of the pack in the Delgado sweepstakes. They are offering minor-league pitcher Yusmeiro Petit for Delgado, 33, and are willing to take $48 million in salary off the Marlins' hands in the process.

"This trade could happen quickly," a source said last night.

Minaya and Willie Randolph both want Soriano, 29, to be a Met. Minaya has been trying to acquire the Rangers second baseman for the past year. Texas is looking for help in many areas and would move Soriano, who batted .268 last season with 36 home runs, 102 runs scored and 104 RBIs.

Delgado, who spurned the Mets and signed with the Marlins last year, has averaged 38 home runs over the past seven years and would provide much needed muscle. Delgado batted .301 with 33 home runs and 115 RBIs this season.

All the Mets' trade talk is not just about hitters.

Another big name the Mets are pursuing is another ex-Yankee, right-hander Javier Vazquez of the Diamondbacks, according to sources. Kris Benson's name has popped up in that deal, along with promising young right-hander Brian Bannister, who was 13-5 last year at Binghamton (AA) and Norfolk (AAA).

Vazquez, 29, has requested a trade back East and would love to be reunited with Minaya, who was his GM in Montreal. Vazquez is coming off a bad season when he was 11-15 with a 4.91 ERA. Vazquez is owed $11.5 million in 2006 and $12.5 million in 2007.

The Mets have valuable young players available to trade: outfielder Lastings Milledge, a 20-year-old who has been labeled a can't-miss prospect but is blocked in center field by Carlos Beltran; and rejuvenated pitcher Aaron Heilman, who turned around his career last year. In 108 innings, Heilman, a former No. 1 pick, struck out 106 batters. The 27-year-old finished 5-3 with a 3.17 ERA and five saves.

The Mets are in a win-now mode and Minaya said yesterday he is pursuing many different options.

"We have a lot of work to do," Minaya said. "If we can upgrade our bullpen and get more offense, that would be great."

Two things.

First off, do any of you notice the Mets would trade a latino AWAY in this trade? Yusemeiro Petit is from Venezuela.

Second, these latinos and Mets jokes have gotten very old, are no longer funny, and add nothing to the discussion. Enough of it.

It's not really a fire sale. People want to say that, but it's for a different reason. Last time - Huizenga just took his money and ran. This time, they tried everything they could to draw fans. Added payroll, signed big free agents, and nobody still came out. So now the fans have to deal with the repercussions. Last time it was unfortunate for everybody. This time... I honestly think it's deserved.

I don't love this trade. I would have if Milledge was involved, but I guess not even the Mets are that stupid. Petit is ok and Jacobs will probably end up as our 1B.

Now we still need to find out what prospects we are going to get for LoDuca and Pierre.

I'm not crazy about this trade, but it could have been worse. I had imagined Minaya giving away all the Mets' best prospects for Delgado or Ramirez instead of only two. Delgado certainly fills the need for a great hitter at 1B, which the Mets have lacked for years now.

Just hope Minaya hasn't forgotten about the gaping holes at 2B and C in the meantime...

The Marlins are acquiring significant prospects, but good lord this could be an awful team in 2006. Let's see...

C- Josh Willingham (better than Lo Duca)

1B- Mike Jacobs

2B- Luis Castillo

SS- Josh Wilson

3B- Joe Dillon

LF- Miguel Cabrera

CF- Juan Pierre

RF- Jeremy Hermida

SP- Dontrelle Willis

SP- Scott Olsen

SP- Jason Vargas

SP- Ron Villone

SP- Josh Johnson

With all the AA pitchers, I could easily see a 100 loss season.
