Another big trade goes down according to ESPN (well, the sports flash guy on WEEI saying its from ESPN).

White Sox get Jim Thome

Phillies get Arron Rowand

no clue what other players or cash is involved.

Great trade for Philly, and I guess this means Konerko is gone for Chicago.

I would think Philli is paying most of the contract and Thome will be DHing. Konerko could still come back.

I don't understand this trade for Chicago. Getting rid of a GG caliber OF that can hit you around 20 homers a year for a guy that could be done.

*speechless*

I would hope the citizens of the south side would be armed with torches and pitchforks should the White Sox not resign Konerko, who put on one of the most impressive post-season performances of recent memory. If they can keep Konerko, DH Thome, move Everett to left and Podsednik to CF this doesn't look so bad. But, is Thome any more reliable than Frank Thomas at this point? He's making a hell of a lot more money, that's for sure. And Rowand is a great OF with a pretty good bat.

Good move for Philly.

I'll take it. I was on the "getting anything back for Thome is just gravy" train.

I would like to point out though, that it is disappointing it came to this. Thome was nothing but a class act the whole way and him standing with Schmidt at the closing of the Vet will always be a great image. Seeing Thome hit #500 in a Phils uniform would have been great, but this had to be done.

Everett is a FA. From everything I've heard and read Ozzie Guillen is pleading with White Sox management to trade for Juan Pierre. I don't know why they need him when they have a similiar player in Posednik, but whatever.

I'd imagine it's mostly because of Konerko's uncertain status. Actually, the Sox not making him an official offer and this deal would suggest his status is known.

Good move for the Phillies, who will finally fill the gap in center, let Howard get a full-time spot, and clear Thome off the books for the most part. Still think they could've filled two or three holes by dealing Howard, but most people just wanna look at this thing on the surface.

Reading on a Phils board, there are reports that the Phils are picking up $24 mil (half the contract). I haven't seen anything official, but if that is the case it works for me. I was thinking they would have to pick up 3/4 to get anything back.

Phils are also getting two prospects back in the deal.

From the Philly Inquirer:

"The Phillies confirmed today that they have agreed on a deal with the White Sox that would send the slugging first baseman back to his home state of Illinois. The Phillies would receive centerfielder Aaron Rowand and two prospects from the White Sox, who have agreed to pay slightly more than half the remaining $46 million on Thome's contract.

Even better. The Phils really made out on this one.

Man, this has been a pretty eventful couple of days after weeks of virtually nothing happening.

I can't find confirmation for this but some caller on EEI just said that a Newsday Reporter is saying the Mets are going to swing Delgado and Lastings Milledge to the Red Sox for Manny. I doubt its true because...

A.) Mets need a first baseman

B.) Newsday reported it. They get nothing right.

Thats actually not true. For such a small paper, they seem to break a whole load of stories that eventually become true in NY sports.

Newsday's not small. It's #9 in daily circulating newspapers, with only USA Today, Wall Street Journal, the NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, NY Daily News, Chicago Tribune and the NY Post having more.

In terms of NYC, it's much smaller than the Times/Post/NYDN because they cover LI not NYC. But the others' sports coverage is either not their forte (Times) or sensationalized (Post/NYDN).

The rumored prospects are Daniel Haigwood and Gio Gonzalez .  Haven't seen confirmation on that yet, though.

The Philly Inquirer is now naming these two as the prospects coming back.

"As for the prospects, Gonzalez was 5-3 with a 1.87 ERA, striking out 84 in 57 2/3 innings at single-A Kannapolis before being promoted to single-A Winston-Salem, where he was 8-3 with a 3.56 ERA, striking out 79 and walking 25 in 73 1/3 innings. Haigwood was 8-2 with a 3.77 ERA at Winston-Salem, with 84 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings and 6-1, with a 1.74 ERA at double-A Birmingham, with 76 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings."

With the addition of the prospects, I think it is a great deal. The thing I was worried about with Gillick was if at his age he was going to worry about helping the abysmal farm system. These two likely hop right into their top 10 prospects with Gonzalez becoming one of their top 2 or 3.

And it appears that the amount the Phils are paying is down to $22 mil.

Being the Phils fan, though, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Great deal for Philly if they can get it done. I'd have to wonder what the ChiSox are smoking though. What the hell would anyone want Thome for at this point? Didn't he say it all last season?

I keep hearing the Brewers' Lyle Overbay (1B) being bantered about in possible trades with the Mets or Red Sox, but I doubt any of it is that serious at this point.

Ya, there's been a rumored trade between Milwaukee and Boston for about a week. As far as the players involved this is what I've heard.

Boston gets...

Lyle Overbay

Geoff Jenkins

Class A prospect

Milwaukee gets...

Manny Ramirez

Matt Clement

Triple A prospect

basically, its bullshit.

I think this is a good trade for both sides, Chicago media is reporting a potential 4 year deal for Konerko as well, but that the Thome Deal is essentially the end of Frank Thomas' Career in Chicago. I think the loss of Rowand is unfortunate, but the outfield situation is still prpbably okay. Good trade for both sides.

Reports coming out of some of the NY papers recentley and some NY radio shows is that Bubba Crosby might actually be the Yankees starting CF on opening day next year.
