If you were Wayne Gretzky

Recommended Posts

With all the great talent to be had, I'm thinking we can assemble a mock Team Canada:

Submit, until November 25, your 3 goaltending picks. Feel free to edit as you like until the deadline, but please mark who you've edited. For example:

Brodeur, Turco, Cloutier

Edit:Brodeur, Luongo, Belfour

----

Between the 25th of Nov and December 7, we'll do defencemen, and Dec. 8-18 for forwards.(Dates are tentative, I can't quite recall when the team will be announced.)

Submit your 1-2-3 picks, respectively, I'll tally up and when the time comes, we'll compare our collective SMARKS team to Gretky and co's.

Remember, this is a fantasy draft, not "who you think Gretzk" will pick. Non-Canadians, are, of course, inferio..er, more than welcome to compete.

Debate away and have fun.

------------

1) Roberto Luongo

2) Martin Brodeur

3) Jose Theodore

Quite frankly, Luongo and Brodeur are locks IMO, regardless of Brodeur's iffy year. It's a battle between 7 or 8 others for the easiest gold medal in Olympic history

EDIT:

1) Brodeur

2) Theodore

3) Curtis Joseph

A great conversation on Coach's Corner last night:

DC: Cujo's makin 35 saves a night! He's the best goalie in the league right now!

RM: Well, what about Hasek?

DC: Hasek makes 35 saves every 3 games. It's Cujo. Welcome back to the Olympics!

I agree. Even with his flop in Salt Lake, he's been brilliant on what can be considered a game thats fairly like Olympic hockey right now. He's goin to Turin, says I.

First, I'd protest coaching the Coyotes, who nobody cares about here, and force them back to Winnipeg.

Oh, as for goalies...

1. Luongo

2. Brodeur

3. Theodore.

Sorry to copy, but I agree.

What I like about this season in the NHL is that the game more closely represents the European/Olympic game. We are starting to see which goalies can deal with these new types of attacks Also, we are starting to see many more European players kicking all sorts of ass, as the game seems to resemble the game that they have been playing for years.

Although Brodeur is not playing too great right now, he belongs on the Canadian National Team. I can't imagine the team without him.

Not to get ahead of myself but what if Wayne puts together a line of Spezza, Crowsby, and Staal? Now I know that they are all considered centers, but then again, they are young men who should still know how to play a plethora of positions.

1. Brodeur~ Nobody should question this, he's been the best goalie in the last decade.

2. Theodore~ Has won play-off series recently and is still a top goaltender, not too many others fit this category

3. Luongo~ One of the top 5 goalies in the NHL

Not really. There's been 5 or 6 goalies tossed around, and the defence and forward lines will in no way be similar...there were 81 players on the slection list, and we're still second guessing for christ sakes.

Brodeur will be better under the international rules, without the trapezoid and defensemen who feel handcuffed deep in the defensive zone. Theodore is unrealistic because he'll want playing time that he won't get.

Bryan McCabe? Yeah, the -1 is something we really want on the team. The new rules (or enforcement of the rules) this year have really exposed McCabe defensively. It's nice that he's been able to put up so many points on the powerplay that most un-intelligent people are oblivious to it. Unless they decide to re-institute the can opener for the Olympics, McCabe won't be able to defend the Europeans on the big ice.

Alright, I'm sandwiched between both jobs today, and am just on my lucnh break now. Check around 11 eastern tonight(basically halftime during the Colts-Steelers) for the defensive candidates and the SMARKS Team Canada Goalie Line-up.

The smarks have spoken.

Brodeur, Luongo and Legace are your goalie choices.

Interestingly, no votes for Cam Ward and Andrew Rycroft who were named to the orientation. Votes for Legace, who was not named.

Please post your top 7, in order of top pairing/chemistry.

My picks:

Redden-Regehr

Niedermayer-Blake

Jovanovski-McCabe

Hannan

We'll tally votes on, December 6. Forwards will be the hardest, so we'll give them an extra two or three days.
