I really wish people would stop judging the Pit based on Leena, Mike and LessonInMachismo...I'd like to see that place flourish as an alternative to over here on the slower days, I wish more of you would come over and stick around, do some contributing rather than simply consider it TSM's dumping grounds and never return there.

yeah...the place started out well, so it HAD potential...but I think we can get it back up there...if not, it folds and we move on, but it'd be nice, like I say, as an alternative.

I think a lot of people gave it up when it was clear that the board was just Mike and Marney's playground and wasn't offering anything that TSM wasn't doing better. Hence you get this "flyover state" dilemma where there's CE, Hell, and everything in between is totally neglected. When I point this out, Mike goes "WELL SHEESH DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT," but what can I do? Spam nine empty folders? That won't change anything, because nobody cares about those folders.

 

I wanted The Pit to be an alternative too, but it failed. Chalk it up to slow traffic, the god-awful Boardum thread, or the fact that a lot of people think some or all of the conservative clique members are insufferable douchebags. At any rate it's gonna be hard to get it up and running as a full board; you might as well wipe out all the pop culture folders and whittle it down to Current Events, General Chat, Hell, and Porn

I think after the "i will be check in on it a very day" deletion is when it became clear that it wasn't gonna be the same at a new location. It's always hard to round everyone back up after something like that. Just merge the Pit's CE population back into TSM and restore the old right-slanted Current Events folder from before the numerous "corrections" that the staff tried to implement. None of this "& Historical Discussion" crap.

The Pit was fun for the first week or two but it ended up centering around complaining about TSM. Even now most of the biggest threads are massive bitch fests.

They change. People used to bitch about Anglesault and Choken One. They got banned. Some people complained about Mike, and he got banned. People complained about Kotz as a mod, he's not a mod. People complained about having an owner who's never around, TSM has a new owner.

 

Things change but normally people decide they liked the other way more, which gives them something new to harp on.

I first have to admit that I was being facetious when I posted my "where will we badmouth TSM?" inquiry. If I cared enough to bitch, I'd do it here.

 

I then have to ask: if people are really down enough on TSM (or the Pit, for that matter) ... why would they need to change the board? I might be wrong, but I'm under the presumption that there are other message boards somewhere on thissy here intarweb. Don't like one board or the other, go find a new one.

All right, I'll play devil's advocate.

 

For one, putting together a board and having it stay consistently busy isn't easy. TSM itself was boosted (tremendously) by all the legwork that Scott Keith and the previous regime had done from the Smarksboard and all of its various and sundry iterations (Delphi, Blue, Yellow). Think about all of the boards that have splintered off from TSM in one way or another and think about how many of them are still around. WDI, SNKT, Underground Smarks, Brave New World, NMB, the Pit, etc. The latter two are still around because they've been created in the last year, but who knows if they'll be around next year? There are tons of things that contribute to boards going downhill: technical issues, people disagreeing with bannings / administrative decisions, general boredom.

 

And it isn't easy to be an "alternative" to TSM or anywhere when you're inviting 90-95% of your population...from TSM. How much of a difference can it be when it's the same people who, in all likelihood, are having the same discussions that are being had here? Unless you really buy into the forum, you're going to chip into the discussion at TSM where more people participate, where more people read what you're saying.

 

So, yeah. It isn't easy. And those moderator/admin-types at the Pit would probably like it if you spammed nine different folders, if it helped to get some discussion going. The admins can only do so much - at some point, the posters have to like the board enough to continue to post and make a community out of it.

Yeah, this forum can trace its lineage all the way back to the Rantsylvania Delphi board, so it's been established in one form or another since 2000 or maybe before, so membership has never been a problem. Oddly enough, the TSM incarnation has outlived all the Scooter-run versions, combined. Go us. Basically, all the Pit has going for it is CE these days. Does it get too right-wing even for me? Yes. But at least that monster developed in a semi-organic process, whereas our New And Better CE here was a result of an edict from the moderators that things would be different, yes sir, this will be a left-leaning folder now. It just ended up being the Mike And Marney Show, it wasn't Jingus's master plan.

 

But yeah, every other folder is outclassed by TSM's respective counterparts, except Comics--nobody wins when it comes to discussing comic books--and the General Chat boards are just what they are, so it's a push. As for trying to spark discussion, it's worth a shot, but there's only so much music discussion that I can squeeze out of LessonInMachismo and his ilk, y'know? Guy walked out of a restaurant because its atmosphere was "too liberal."

 

So yeah, it'd be fun to resuscitate the Pit, but I fear the board has had too many deletions, too many subsequent Slapnuts rallying cries, too many left-wing posters run out of town, too many threads about Leena, and not enough interest in building a solid middle section to bridge The Two Bullshittings of political discussion and general chat. I'd rather waste time trying to build the main page here back up.
