Fuck, I love that game. I started replaying it a few years back and only got as far as the dinner party where Kefka's jailed and you answer all the questions, so I really don't want to start replaying it again. But I probably will.

Who took the Ragnarok esper, and who took the sword, then spent a ridiculous amount of time uncursing the stuff you needed to learn Ultima?

That was me. You throw down a single character party, equip a ribbon and that other relic that gives your character auto-invis, and then walk around outside Cyan's castle, smacking things. Basically puts your power levelling and uncursing into one fell swoop.

First couple times I used the Esper. It was only after checking I walkthrough that I found out about the Paladin Shield, which makes the Ragnorok Esper completely obselete.

I also let Shadow die the first time through. That's really sneaky, right there.

Besides that, I think I completed every side quest the first time through, with just careful exploration.

Fantrans = Fan-made translation, patched onto the Japanese Rom.

I'm going to send you FF3(VI), because I like the original translation. (The original translation of FF2(IV)? Not so much.)

Yousendit's working on it.

Well, I just got the FFIV GBA rom, I hope it fixes that.

When FF Anthology came out (Chrono plus FFIV) they updated the translation, and put all the hardtype stuff back in. They left you spoony bard intact though. Obviously someone knew their shit and told them of the riots that would ensue a spoony bard removal.

You spoony bard!

Forget the shitty translation, I'm annoyed at all the special attacks missing: Dark Wave, Recall Spell, Prayer, etc.

Gamespot asserts that all of these attacks are present in the GBA remake. I'll have further info tonight, after I hit up the local Wal-Mart. $24.87 bitches.

Yup, I'm playing FFIVA right now. It has the Dark Wave, a vastly improved translation (featuring a rualultimatepower reference) and better graphics. And you walk about three times faster than you did in the original.

It's great.

Yeah, but that takes all the fun out of it. Was I the only kid that actively shunned strategy guides and vowed to beat these games using hard-nosed determination and my own wits?

Hey K, what'd it run you, $30? I swear I saw an ad this morning on Walmart.com for $24 and change. But now, I can't find it, and I called over there and they're all "twenty-nine-ninety-nine, skank" and it's not as though I won't pay that, but I swear upon the Crystal sword I saw it for under 25 not twelve hours ago.

By the way,

did it bug anyone else that the Crystal sword and armor were the most powerful in the game? I get that they're magical, but come on. They're

crystal.

You can defeat the Phantom Train in one move by using a Phoenix Down on it.

Phoenix Down and Revivify beat all the undead enemies. Good trick, but kinda cheating. Speakin' of the Phantom Train, I loved having ghosts in my party and using Possess. And I loved that song.

Okay, when I go home for Christmas I'm digging out the SNES, FFIV & 6, Earthbound, Secret of Mana, and, what the hell, maybe even the abomination that is Secret of Evermore. Also Chrono Trigger.

If you're going to fully enjoy FFIV, you need the J2E translation of the Japanese Hard version for SNES roms. Everything else is inferior.

I usually did the first time I play through RPG's. Unless the game sucks, and I don't want to beat it again. Then, the 2nd playthrough, I make sure to do everything possible.

Including legitly finding the goddamn fucking Pink Tail in FFIV. Which took me 3 days. About 15 hours of playing. And that was with a rom I was speeding through with. I don't want to imagine someone trying that with the silly lag the PS version has.

I think the new GBA version slightly beats it out. They add patches of dialogue to flesh out the game. (more than the original hardtype).

Uh, yeah, that's the ticket.

You're playing the ROM, aren't you. Sadly, WM's cheap price was internet-only. I still shelled out the cash. Man, even the box art is awesome.
