And it is called the PRO Football HOF, not the NFL HOF. So yes, Flutie's CFL records does play into account when his time arrives, that was a big reason Warren Moon got into the hall this year.

I just heard on ESPN radio this morning that the Saints sold 55,000 season tickets this year (a club record), most of which came after they drafted Reggie Bush. Good for the team and good for the city.

If you are going to call it the PRO football HOF and not have the best player ever from the Canadian Football League, then what's the point? Not that he will make it, but I would say Flutie is a no-brainer.

 

This was a fairly big topic the other day on the Sportsbash. The host, Eric Kuselias, tried to start an argument that Flutie belonged in. The only problem was almost no one called or wrote in with a dissenting opinion. Most of the audience generally supported the idea.

The problem is the Hall is filled with guys who did big things in the NFL/AFL. Flutie was never really a great player in NFL, sans a couple of seasons. How can they justify putting a mediocre player in the Hall? With Warren Moon he still enjoyed a great career in the NFL.

Flutie's a given for the college football HOF, and the CFL HOF ... but it'd be a fucking joke if he made it to the HOF in Canton. The guy was, for the most part, a career back-up that only had one good year as a starter. His NFL career falls way too short (no pun intended) for him to even be considered for induction into Canton.

Listening to the local idiots try & justify inducting Flutie into the HOF has been painful. One genius went as far as to say that Flutie was held-back as a starter because coaches would rather lose with a tall QB than win with a midget like Dougie. (my words, not his ... but that was his actual point: coaches were so anti-Flutie that they'd rather keep him on the bench than win.)

He still holds four of the CFL's top five highest single-season completion marks, including a record 466 in 1991. His 48 touchdown passes in 1994 remains a CFL record. He earned three Grey Cup MVP awards, and was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player a record six times (1991-1994, and 1996-1997).

 

I'm not really advocating the guy either way, but that's a damn fine resume if you want to make the case. If you're going to bother calling it a pro football hall of fame and not the NFL hall of fame, you should probably have the best CFLer of all time in there.

About the single-season pro football passing record...you can't realistically compare CFL stats with NFL stats, because the games are too different. Having only three downs make teams pass a LOT more. Case in point: This past season, three CFL QBs threw for over five thousand yards, while only two RBs rushed for more than 1200 yards (in an 18 game season).

 

Put an NFL-calibre QB in a CFL offense, and he'll get close to the record every season. A guy like Marino or Elway or Manning could probably top 7000 yards in a season.

 

Flutie was a guy who was too good for the CFL, not quite good enough for the NFL.

I doubt he gets traded. He's going to be a free agent after this season anyway.
