Best time of year

Recommended Posts

A conversation with my buddy just now about the cavalcade of good sports on this week (NFL FInal Week and Wild Card games, All Canadian Triple Header today in the NHL, College Bowl Series, first week of the PGA Tour season) got into a debate about the best time of year for sports. Thoughts?

I'm going with Early April...I'm a little biased as The Masters is my favourite sports event of the year, but baseball is just starting, March Madness is winding down, the big events in curling are all taking place, and hockey playoffs start.

Discuss.

Mid-October should also be up there, I would think.

Dude, I live in South Carolina. While not as insistent about it as many detractors, no one around here cares about hockey. I watch once the NHL gets to its conference finals, but before that I can't really motivate myself to watch it despite Carolina Hurricanes games being played regularly on Fox Sports South.

Yeah, good call. The thread is not titled "I'll find reasons to further elevate or detract your case". My bad.

Either April (NCAA basketball championship, Masters, Opening Day, NBA and NHL playoffs start) or June (NBA finals, Stanley Cup finals, U.S. Open, interleague play, and the World Cup/Euro Cup every other year) does it for me.

Right now is the worst time of the year, IMO. I mean the NFL playoffs are fun, but that means that Football is almost over and weekends are about to start sucking again.

Being mildly obsessive about basketball (even women's basketball), my favorite time of the sports year runs from mid-February (NBA All-Star Game) until around Labor Day (WNBA Finals).

My least favorite being the "dead time" from the end of the WNBA season to the beginning of the NBA season.

You forgot the thrill of NASCAR!

Yo, NASCAR is the shit early in the season, when there's really not much else going on in the sporting world. After the weather starts warming up, I'll only watch the big races (Brickyard, Charlotte, Daytona v2.0, as well as road courses where critics can see the cars turn left and right). Unfortunately, by the time the season is winding down and the champion is being determined in the final races, football's up and running.

Mid-June has the 24 Hours of LeMans, which is the other racing highlight of the year for me. And oh yeah, don't forget WRC, which runs through most of the year.

(Kinda went off-topic, but hey, we've gotta have an auto racing post in this folder at least once a month)

The WNBA season IS dead time. I think by now, WNBA is an instant punchline, like Don Henley.
Whatever boss.

Basketball >>>> anything that ain't basketball, AFAIC, so WNBA still beats the alternative of not watching basketball for me. I've got no issues with whether or not you like it, but personally, there isn't anything that comes on TV at any point in the year that I would miss a baskeball game to watch. As long as the WNBA comes on during the summer, I'm going to watch it, even if nobody else I know does.

Funny thing, I only watch NASCAR when my favorite driver leads the Cup in the standings. When he doesn't, then not really. (Tony Stewart before anyone asks)

Say, me too! It was Mark Martin before he retired.

Nah, this is far from the best.

February is easily the worst, especially after Aussie Open.

Late March-Early April was always my favorite. Mostly because I love college bball, and it's a good time for tennis with IW and Miami. And the Masters. And the joys of a horrible winter finally ending. And even my hate of baseball subsides when every team stupidly thinks they have a chance.

The first round of the hockey playoffs are pretty much my favourite time of year, sports or not. The start of the baseball season on top of that is icing on the cake.

I love me some Bowl games, NBA playoffs, the Super Bowl, the Drafts and all that. But nothing compares to the hype, the intensity, and the fun of March Madness. It doesn't even matter if your team is playing. Everyone loves filling out brackets and getting in on tournament pools for money or fun.

I can tell you the worst time is February. Nothing's happening in February.

Conference play in college hoops really heats up.

My honest-to-goodness automatic reaction to that was to go "ooooooh!" and make the nWo spooky fingers.

Slim Citrus = Rochester?

High times:

October

January

March

June

Low times:

February

July

This only relates to the big four though. Tennis is meh, and fuck a bunch of golf.

Sigh. Uncivilized southern hicks who only care about football.

Sure, regular season matchups are slightly heated up in February, but the real shit doesn't begin until the conference tourneys in early March

Feburary really sorts out the situation for teams on the bubble heading into conference tournments, plus the low major conference championship games are ussually fun to watch.

Yes, conference tournies are awesome. I've only been to the MAAC ones, with zero crowds, and the intensity of the games is great. Hopefully, Northern Arizona can dominate the Big Sky... I'd love to see that.
