Annabelle 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2006 i find it silly that anyone would bother asking for suggestions because they are too lazy to look for what they like themselves, then have the audacity to respond to people's goodwill by saying "thats sucks". make up your own mind. don't listen to us. you've clearly demonstrated that you have differing tastes from several people here, so why continue asking us? people can download pitchfork's album fo the say to the cows come home, but it is nearly impossible to say that they like 'em all. my point? everyone has different opinions. we can't tell you what you'd like. only you know. or should know. as far as nico goes. i've never said she had a great voice. you said she can't sing. which is ridiculous. you're the one who needs to explain your comment, not me or anyone. and, your answer doesn't make sense. it sounds as though you just need us to hold your hand through music. if it sounds difficult, you fold your tent. which is fine, that must be your style. but thats very rudimentary. you'll live a boring life of pop music. most females HAVE to have these wide ranged vocals to be taken serious. nico is really one of the first females to say she didn't need an amazing voice to be taken serious. sorta like dylan when he came out. and can dylan "not sing"? Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted January 14, 2006 Technically speaking, not really, but that doesn't make him a bad vocalist. I've only heard Nico re The Velvet Underground and Nico, and she's the reason I don't really like it.
k thx 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2006 i find it silly that anyone would bother asking for suggestions because they are too lazy to look for what they like themselves, then have the audacity to respond to people's goodwill by saying "thats sucks". make up your own mind. don't listen to us. you've clearly demonstrated that you have differing tastes from several people here, so why continue asking us? people can download pitchfork's album fo the say to the cows come home, but it is nearly impossible to say that they like 'em all. my point? everyone has different opinions. we can't tell you what you'd like. only you know. or should know. as far as nico goes. i've never said she had a great voice. you said she can't sing. which is ridiculous. you're the one who needs to explain your comment, not me or anyone. and, your answer doesn't make sense. it sounds as though you just need us to hold your hand through music. if it sounds difficult, you fold your tent. which is fine, that must be your style. but thats very rudimentary. you'll live a boring life of pop music. most females HAVE to have these wide ranged vocals to be taken serious. nico is really one of the first females to say she didn't need an amazing voice to be taken serious. sorta like dylan when he came out. and can dylan "not sing"? As I said, Nico's not a singer, she's a chanteuse. You don't listen to her to hear her sing, you listen to her to evoke some imagery. I can understand how some would like her, but she's done nothing for me. EDIT: Your first paragragh, I'm simply asking people with similar tastes in music to myself to reccommend albums I'd like. If peopel like the same music as me, then they see music in the same way I do and will have other records they like that they may like too. There are millions of cd's in the world that I haven't heard and never will. I'd never heard (or at least registered) Wolf Parade until this thread, however the album sounds pretty good. If you have a magical way of finding music other than taking reccommendations than others with similar tastes, which is what most music literature and radio is based upon, I'd love to hear it. k thx 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2006 Clearly, you will like the music that you are told to like and nothing more. Until you opt to approach music not as an elitist sport but as a matter of personal choice and passion...there is nothing I can offer to you. There are plenty of people like you...indie, metal, hippie, rock radio...whatever youre supposed to like, you will. Keep trying hard, Im sure someone will find you credible. Where do you get the idea that I listen to what I'm told to like? If that was the case, I'd be saying Nico was the greatest thing about the 60's, because she's got a hell of a lot more "indie cred", as you put it, than Rachael Stevens. The main links between the bands I named in the first post, is that they're bands that people know. If I start going off about Ikara Colt or Ooberman, no-one would know what I'm on about, and people would probably accuse me of seekign even more "indie cred" by naming obscure bands that no-one's heard of. Now, your arguement is that I strivefor indie cred and have a boxed in music taste. Either provide a proper reason for this, showing which bands I ignore out of hand purely because they are uncool and where I have strived for musical elitism, shut up and stop taking the thread off topic, or take it to Hardcore Discussion where we can discuss things in more depth. Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2006 Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti. Great one band act that few people seem to notice. I like his stuff, very lo-fi. Also, Animal Collective are pretty good.
k thx 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2006 The Futureheads The Rakes The Futureheads wind me up. I should like them, but for some reason I'm not a fan. The Rakes, I'll have a look at. I'll also d/l Ariel Pink.
Special K 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2006 I generally like really odd singing voices. Bjork. The lead singer of Throwing Muses whose name escapes me (EDIT: Kristen Hersch, THAT's her name.) Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon (well, not when she's being really annoying). Tom Waits. Kazu from Blonde Redhead. And if someone likes 'Indie Bands' it's probably not to look cool, but because 90% of the stuff on the radio is pure shit. I'd rather be a pretentious twat than listen to Toby Keith and The Black-Eyed Peas. Fucking Coldplay is regarded as a serious contender for best rock band on the planet? How are they even a rock band? That's ignoring the fact that there's an incredible number of lesser-known 'indie' bands out there, and a very small number of current bands that get radio play. You're much more likely to find bands you like just by pure odds, that is if you're interested enough in music to put a little effort forth.
