Most underrated and overrated pppvs

Recommended Posts

Someone mentioned Fall Brawl '95, but I disagree. Pillman/Badd and Flair/Anderson were both very good-great, but look at the rest of the show:

1. Craig Pittman vs. Cobra (?): 90 second squash

2. Renegade vs. DDP: Awful

3. Bunkhouse Buck/Dick Slater vs. Harlem Heat: Also Awful

4. War Games: Worst ever, other than 1998.

I'll have to disagree on a couple things.

For one, Pittman/Cobra was obviously too short to be shitty. Pittman coming down from the ceiling and destroying the "feared" Cobra was pretty entertaining as it's always nice to see a crappy newcomer get his ass handed to him. Also, the whole segment didn't last 10 minutes so no wasted time.

Renegade/DDP has to be taken for what it was. It was a comedy match w/ DDP bumping around like Renegade was the Ultimate Warrior. Plus, it ended the usefulness of another horrible WCW gimmick. So bonus points for that.

Can't remember much from the tag match.

And no argument in regards to the War Games match but I must note that the Giant was lookin lean and mean . . . much different than today's bloated and puffy Big Show. Plus, Luger's comical selling of Meng's strikes upon his entrance cracks me up to this day. I sure hope it was meant to be comical . . . if not, it's even funnier.

Fully Loaded 2000 doesnt have a single bad match on the card, and several really good ones, HHH/Jericho LMS, Benoit/Rock and even Rikishi/Venis in the cage wasnt too bad thanks to the dive off the cage that Rikishi did.

I agree on backlash 2000, theres not really a "bad match" persay on the show, perhaps the worst match being apa vs bossman/bull. the e and c vs DX match was a good opener and Xpac does a sick blade job at the end. the hardcore 6 way is fun, eddy/essa is another very good match (with fun shenangins with eddy comin out in a tuxedo from the prom)plus you had "the showster" vs angle, and a surpisingly good dudleys vs t and a match that saw Trish finally get his commeuppance and be put thru a table (plus Tests' hilarious comments to the emts like "hey, stop trying to cop a feel you perv") , plus a great Benoit-Jericho match mired only by a a dq finish. rock/HHH was ok but wa smade better by the outside interfernce and austins return and having the wrestlemania ending. Actually this show was what WM 2000 should have been.

judgment day 00 is another underrated show where I found everything to be at least good, with a killer rock/HHH iron man ME and a cool jericho-benoit submission match on the undercard. a great six man opener with kishi-too cool vs e and c and angle

I think Royal Rumble 1991 is underrated when people talk about good cards the WWF produced in the early 1990s. It had a hot opener with Rockers-Orient Express, a good effort from Barbarian-Big Bossman, a HOT crowd for the Warrior-Slaughter match (with great commentary by an irate/crazed/desperate Rowdy Piper), a shitty Koko B. Ware-Mountie match which doesn't even appear on the Coliseum Video version but does on a live broadcast tape I was able to buy on E-Bay, the epic Virgil face turn that the crowd goes apeshit over, and a pretty good Royal Rumble to boot (where I think the WWF dropped the ball on Rick Martel big time).

Overall, I think all of the WWF pay-per-views from 1991 were pretty solid wrestling wise, especially considering the crap we see today. The worst of the year would probably have to be Survivor Series that year since it had the crappy finish to the Flair Team vs. Piper Team match and the company took Jake Roberts & Randy Savage out of the main event that killed any heat for Natural Disasters & IRS vs. LOD & Bossman.

A lot of people complained about this show, just because of the general feeling that WWF had a chance to make three new stars that night, and yet it was the same people going over as always do. I thought it was a good show, but I was disappointed that Angle and Jericho lost their matches.

One very overrated show I think is Wrestlemania X8.

I wasn't entertained by a thing on this show. Regal/RVD was a total styles clash and the only bright spot was RVD taking a half nelson suplex. The hardcore title clusterfuck wasn't fun... All I can remember is Maven missing Goldust with a dropkick by like 3 feet, but Goldust sold it anyway. Angle/Kane was one of Kurt's worst ppv matches and ended with the sloppiest roll up ever. While some like Flair/UT, I was bored to death by it. 20 minutes of UT punching and kicking Flair just didn't get me amped, what can I say? Then there was a very heatless Edge/Booker match, probably because, as one sign so aptly put it, "they are fighting over shampoo!" Rock/Hogan was mildly amusing for the crowd reaction, but I'm not a huge fan of Toronto's whole "Let's be different and boo the faces" schtick. The match still sucked. Then there was some women's match no one cared about, followed by the ME no one cared about.

I might have missed something, but I doubt it's important. One of the most boring shows ever, in my opinion.

It's probably just me, but I swear even bad matches with the WWF in the corner feel better than bad events with the WWE there. I don't know why, but a lot of people here have disliked Wrestlemania 2000 and X8 and yet I like them quite a bit.

I don't hate either WM 2000 or X8, but they're really not good shows by any means. 2000 has the Triangle Ladder Match, a decent Benoit-Angle-Jericho match, and a bunch of other meaningless matches. The four-way was okay, I guess. X8 has Hogan-Rock, which is fun for the atmosphere, and that's it. I do like Taker-Flair, but it's nothing worth going out of your way to watch.

I actually quite liked that RVD/Regal opener, but maybe that was because I'd spent the previous 4 months seeing those truly hideous Regal/Edge fiascos and was glad to see RVD overcome the Power of the Punch and win the IC title.

WM 18 isn't as good as 17, but I sure like it a lot more than I do WM 19. WM 19 is a show that for some reason to me just has zero pizzazz going for it. To me that show is all about Brock fucking up the shooting star, HHH burying Booker T., Michaels burying Jericho, and Hogan and Vince jerking each other off.

I guess I just fall into the opposite group here, because I liked WM 19. It wasn't a spectacular show, but it was B-range for sure. I loved Jericho/Michaels even if the wrong guy won... It was less disappointing than Jericho predictably laying down for HHH, I'll put it that way. HHH/Booker seemed pointless, since nothing came of it, but it was an alright match. I thought the rest of the big matches were good. Rock finally got the decisive win over Austin, McMahon and Hogan had a match that was a zillion times more entertaining than it should have been, and Lesnar/Angle was very well done considering Angle's limitations. I don't think the botched SSP hurt the match that much, but if he hits it, it's one of the best WM matches ever. The only actively bad thing on the show was the Miller Lite catfight girls segment.

I think the biggest problem with WM 19 is wasted potential. It was a good show, but with a few other things (Booker winning, Jericho winning, longer CW match, Brock hitting the SSP), it could have been amazing, possibly nearing WM 17 in brilliance.

Yeah, WM X-8 was a piece of shit. Aside from the Rock-Hogan match, which was barely decent from an in-ring standpoint, the entire show was completely forgettable, with Austin-Hall, Angle-Kane, Edge-Booker and the womens match all being terrible. The rest of the matches were mediocre at best.

WM 2000 was a great PPV, but an underwhelming WrestleMania.

One of the most overrated PPV's according to me is Royal Rumble 1992. Everyone seems to say this is maybe the best Rumble match of all time.

# TAG MATCH: The New Foundation vs The Orient Express

# IC TITLE MATCH: Roddy Piper vs The Mountie

# TAG MATCH: The Beverly Brothers vs The Bushwhackers

# TAG TITLE MATCH: The Natural Disasters vs The Legion of Doom

# ROYAL RUMBLE: Ric Flair won the WWF Heavyweight Championship

I cant say I remember alotof the under card other than the fact that it was pretty dull and boring. The Rumble match is what gets alot of praise but I cant really feel it. I watched it once and then one more time on the Flair DVD. It does nothing for me and large parts are just plain boring. Sure its a good story with Flair as number 3 but other than that I think its highly overrated.

I think Rumble 1992 has a lot more nostalgia to those who saw it live on ppv rather than years later. Back then, the odds of someone going an hour (kayfabed or not) and winning were next to nothing. Plus, the WWF Title was on the line and there were several legit contenders who could have won it . . . Hogan, Taker, Flair, Justice, Savage, & Piper (especially since he won the IC Title that night) were main threats. Plus, Monsoon/Heenan were brilliant in creating an exciting and historic atmosphere for the match. Finally, seeing every person come from the curtain and make a beeline for Flair was entertaining in its own right.

Although history may have been somewhat kind to Flair, I think the 92 rumble is one of his truly exceptional performances. Sure, he did a lot of laying around, but the workrate involved was virtually unparalleled in the US at that time. And he sold for all 29 guys.

Almost any fan of Flair can quote "With a tear in my eye, this is the greatest night of my life" and know what he's referring to.

Upon further review, that undercard does look pretty sucky though.

I'd mark the fuck out today for the Beverley's, but not 14 years ago.

Guest The Showcase

Other than the main event, I'm a huge fan of WWF Breakdown: In Your House from September '98.

It had Owen vs Edge, Al Snow/Scorpio vs Too Much, Bradshaw vs Vader, Rock/Mankind/Shamrock Cage Match, Goldust vs Val Venis, DX vs Jarrett/Southern Justice. All of the matches, in my opinion, range from decent to awesome.

I might be way off on this but back in the day I used to have a thing for WWF Backlash 1999:

# SIX MAN TAG: The Ministry (Mideon & Bradshaw & Farooq) defeated The Brood (Gangrel & Edge & Christian)..

# HARDCORE TITLE MATCH: Al Snow w/Head defeated Hardcore Holly to win the Hardcore title..

# IC TITLE MATCH: The Godfather w/Five Hos defeated Goldust w/Blue Meanie to retain..

# #1 CONTENDERS MATCH: New Age Outlaws (Roaddog & Billy Gunn) defeated Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett w/Debra..

# BOILER ROOM BRAWL: Mankind defeated The Big Show..

# GRUDGE MATCH: Triple H w/Chyna defeated X-Pac..

# GRUDGE MATCH: The Undertaker defeated Ken Shamrock..

# WWF TITLE MATCH: Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated The Rock to retain..

Looking back on the card (I havent seen this in a loooooong time) Im not so sure on how I would feel about it today. However back then I felt it was a better card than any reviewer thought at the time. I mostly remember Show vs Mankind which was pretty brutal.

I remember loving Taker/Shamrock from Backlash 99. The crowd was completely dead for it, and most people online at the time thought it was boring, but I really got a kick outta seeing Shamrock absolutely break Taker down with all those submissions. The chokeslam counter into the armbar was hot as hell.

For underrated shows...I have heard next to nothing about No Mercy 04 and aside from the ME and the angle with Heidenreich at the end, I love this show. I thought Kidman vs London was great (really could have made both guys' careers if they'd played it right), and a really fun six person tag with Rico/Hass/Jackie vs the Dudleys/Dawn Marie (Rico rubbing himself while waiting for the "Wassup?!" was probably my spot of the year. Funny as hell). Angle/Show and the Cruiserweight title matches were enjoyable to. One of the few WWE shows I can honestly say that I truly love.
