KingPK 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 I normally don't post in here, but you can't pass up stupidity like this: Nagin calls for rebuilding 'chocolate' New Orleans NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Mayor Ray Nagin on Monday called for the rebuilding of a "chocolate New Orleans" that maintains the city's black majority, saying, "You can't have New Orleans no other way." "I don't care what people are saying Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day," Nagin said in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day speech. "This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be." Uptown is a reference to a mostly white part of the city. Pressed later to explain his comments, Nagin, who is black, told CNN affiliate WDSU-TV that he was referring to creation of a racially diverse city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, insisting that his remarks were not divisive. "How do you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate, you mix it with white milk, and it becomes a delicious drink. That is the chocolate I am talking about," he said. "New Orleans was a chocolate city before Katrina. It is going to be a chocolate city after. How is that divisive? It is white and black working together, coming together and making something special." Before Hurricane Katrina inundated the city with floodwaters in August, forcing its residents to evacuate, about two-thirds of New Orleans' population of 485,000 was black. However, the worst of the flooding was in mostly black areas that remain largely uninhabitable, while residents in mostly white areas that were less badly damaged have been able to return home -- prompting speculation that the much-smaller city could end up with a white majority if large numbers of black evacuees do not return. Black residents and political leaders have complained about the slow pace of recovery in mostly black areas compared to mostly white areas such as Uptown and the French Quarter, where services have been restored and life has returned to a semblance of normal. In his speech, Nagin also said "God is mad at America," in part because he does not approve "of us being in Iraq under false pretenses." "He is sending hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it is destroying and putting stress on this country," Nagin said. He said God is "upset at black America also." "We are not taking care of ourselves. We are not taking care of our women, and we are not taking care of our children when you have a community where 70 percent of its children are being born to one parent." Nagin, first elected in 2002, had been due to come up for re-election next month. However, state officials postponed the city election until April because of the disruptions caused by Katrina. Do I really need to comment any more on this doof? First he fucks up during Katrina, now he's pissing off an entire section of his city and doing the lamest ever attempt at spinning it I've ever seen.
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 Fuck anyone who tries to say he's wrong and fuck anyone who tries to heap blame on the city and state for what happened. He's fuckin' right ON about everything. He's getting out of the bed where he was lying with all the developers and vultures and taking the side of the people, saying they're welcome to come back and they won't have to worry. If the city was 60-70% black, and we want to have the place as it once was, doesn't that mean we should try and encourage the same sort of blend, except without the extreme poverty level? Nah, let's let a bunch of overzealous land barons develop the area to the point where the former residents can't afford to live there. ... man, I've said it before, but 9/11 didn't get me as upset and worked up as this whole thing has. And people can claim up and down that it isn't, but it was just as terrible too. Naturally, we all decided to tune out and not discuss the issues it brought to the surface. Special K 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 I lived in NO for 5 years. I agree with some of the spirit of Nagin's argument (as hilariously put as it is). Generations of black families that have lived in NO very affordably could potentially be priced out if the developers start licking their lips, since the poorer sections of town were very, very old buildings (many beautiful) that will have to be demolished. Saying NO and Louisiana bears no responsibility in this matter is incorrect, though. We've known that the levies were insufficient for at least 10 years, probably longer (despite the protestations of FEMA and Bush.) They should have been repaired, with a combination of federal and state money. The fact is, Louisiana, and NO in general is infamous for their corrup governments, and widespread skimming of money. The people don't bear responsibility for this, but you can't say the local gov't is faultless, not by a long shot. As it is, it's a prime example of when government funding for housing is essential, both federal and local. Black or white, let's get the families who lived there back in NO. Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 I didn't say they were faultless, obviously things must be done on the local and state levels, but when a disaster of this magnitude hits you have to recognize that they can only do so much. Far be it for the federal guys to recognize that and do their damndest to fix admitted mistakes as best they can, let's just blame the city that effectively ceased to exist. The complete ineptitude of the federal authorities, which is becoming more and more apparent as thousands of pages of communications are made public, was inexcusable. Man, I can't even type about it anymore. Any time the topic comes up, I'm far too incensed to argue rationally.
Special K 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 Oh, I know, man. I'm just saying that the levies should have been repaired LONG ago.

Special K 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 Oh, you would. You better believe the levies will be tip-top when all's said and done. It'll probably never flood again in our lifetime. That said, NO is certainly toxic. The whole city smells like piss and wet dog. Think about the romantic Mississippi. By the time it's flowing into NO, it's had every factory and trade ship it can handle. My freshman year, we had a riverboat cruise. The Mississippi smells like raw shit by the time it gets to NO. There's a reason that people mostly eat river seafood (catfish, crawdads) instead of shit caught in the gulf, there. They know what's flushing out into the gulf. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2006 Why couldn't he have just said "we're going to restore New Orleans to its former glory" or something? I would think "bigger & better" comes ahead of "blacker" in the priority list. All the talk about God wanting New Orleans to be black and God bringing down hurricanes because of Iraq make him sound like some bastard child of Robertson and Farrakhan. Somehow, I don't think God wants New Orleans to be black, or white, or chocolate, or purple, or whatever. God is not an urban planner. At the end of the day, like all raving-and-drooling black rhetoric, change black to white and we'd be calling for heads on sticks. chaosrage 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2006 Yeah, it should be noted that he also apologized the next day for what he said. I'm from NO, the chocolate city line was hilarious but obviously blown out of proportion. Nagin isn't a racist, he was just trying to reassure a black crowd that they would be welcome back. And he said a few things without thinking. Later he admitted that the chocolate analogy was horrible. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060118/pl_nm/...icanes_mayor_dc [NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - The mayor of New Orleans apologized Tuesday for saying the hurricane-ravaged city would be rebuilt as a "chocolate" city and for blaming the storm on the wrath of God over U.S. involvement in Iraq. The "chocolate" remark, which Mayor Ray Nagin made in a speech Monday, struck a nerve, as racial tensions and concerns loom over proposed plans to rebuild New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina. Several of the hardest-hit neighborhoods were mostly black, and many residents have expressed fears that those areas will not be rebuilt while those with more white residents may be. Before the August 29 storm, New Orleans was about 70 percent black. "If I offended anyone, I sincerely apologize," the mayor, who is black, said Tuesday. "I need to be more sensitive and more aware of what I'm saying. "I want everybody to be welcome in New Orleans -- black, white, Hispanic, Asian -- because that's the kind of city that we deserve going forward," he said. "I was trying to, and didn't do it very well, to deal with this whole notion, the undercurrent what's being talked about, and what's being talked about is who is going to come back to New Orleans at the end of the day." In his speech Monday, marking the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Nagin said: "This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be. .... This city will be chocolate at the end of the day." Other black leaders in New Orleans said they were taken aback by Nagin's remarks. "Everybody's jaws are dropping right now," City Councilman Oliver Thomas told The Times-Picayune newspaper. "Even if you believe some of that crazy stuff, that is not the type of image we need to present to the nation." In his speech, Nagin also said a wrathful God sent the hurricanes. "Surely God is mad at America," he said. "Surely he's not approving of us being in Iraq under false pretense. But surely he's upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves." In his apology, Nagin said: "I said some things that were totally inappropriate. I shouldn't have made any references to God as it relates to this city. In the moment I got caught up, and it shouldn't have happened." Nagin also said he has made the "chocolate" reference several times before, including before Congress. Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2006 God ain't pissed at us. http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/hurricane.asp And Snopes' explanation of why that's false is BS. Of course the hurricanes didn't just make a narrow path of destruction on the black lines, but that's where their actual centers of circulation were as far as meterologists are concerned. Plus, we have heroic figures such as MLK and to a lesser extent Malcolm X on our side. Most white supremacists expouse the values of Hitler, call for the killing of Jews, Niggers, Spics, etc, hold some pretty crazy conspiracy theories that would even make Kanye West blush, and march around in chic though politically incorrect Nazi regelia. Stephen Joseph 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2006 I'll be frank. within 50 to 100 years, New Orleans will exist only by being surrounded by levees. FROM ALL AROUND. Katrina sped up coastal erosion. You CANNOT rebuild New Orleans to be like how it was. It is impossible unless you want a big ass circle of concrete surrounding the city. There are two options: 1) Abandon 2) Venice-it I've seen the geographical prints and projections, and everyone that's a disaster recovery specialist down there knows it. But people want to be stubborn and build somewhere where they shouldn't. Idiots.

If white supremacy has any values worth noting, they are overshadowed by the Jerry Springer circus it has become. I was about to rip u apart..but I actually agree somewhat.......although a main difference is that black supremacists just use the stage to give the poor false hope in turn of making money while fuels many black's inferiority complex...while black supremacy is more palatible to mainstream america...its because whites are in the position of power..as long as whites stay in their position...black supremacy isnt a threat...if the whites in power all of a sudden take on white supremacy..u better believe blacks like myself are fucked..once upon a time Detroit had 2 million people and a vibrant economy and was the place to be in america...when the race riots happened in 1967 and black supremacy took over...the whites picked up and moved north...black supremacists swooped in with the idea that "we dont no no white people here" they elected Coleman Young in the 70s...sure the city got poorer and poorer but "one of our own" was in office...he did what many blacks wanted to do..tell the white man to fuck off...rational people knew that Coleman was robbing the city blind and going into business for himself....Coleman pointed the finger at the white man and that became a trend white he was mayor 20 years as Detroit turned into a virtual ghostown...archer was next to get into office...he tried to lure white businesses and revitalize Detroit...even bringing this years super bowl...but with the decades of brainwashing...no matter the balanced budget and improving society..detroiters turned up their nose to the "acceptable negro"...currently Detroit has Kwame Kilpatrick as mayor...as may he created a 300 mil debt in 5 years..many scandals..robbing the city blind so much that the state may take it over soon....but he stays in office because he speaks "our language", he "acts like us" in other words...hes a "real nigga".... in 2006, Detroit population more than cut in half, tens of thousands are leaving every year and the economy is in the pits, while Oakland County..where many of the whites moved is probably the richest county in america with a great economy...within a couple years im moving from Detroit too...anyone who questions the position of power can just look north and south of 8 mile road......
