iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2006 Anyone who thinks this Duke team is an all time great team is delusional. Squeaking by a jobber like Va Tech at home? FSU? I don't think I'd really take Duke right now against any team in the top 10 aside from a really banged up Florida. Man, that U of L/ND game was awesome today. Dean's buzzer beating 3 to tie it was just amazing and a potential season saver for U of L. Now two things are needed: 1. Win a few more games to make the conf. tourney at least (I'd say about 18-19 wins). 2. Win a game or two at MSG to reach 20 wins. I can't see any way the committee leaves out a 20 win Rick Pitino team. I still think Duke's the best team in the country, but I'll agree that they're nothing special in terms of an all-time team at this point. Paulus is just such a huge, glaring weakness. He's always making bad turnovers and missing easy shots in big games. Put a Top 50 point guard on that Duke team, and they're a cinch to win the title. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2006 KU beats OU by 1 today. OU led by 16 at one point but went on an OU trademarked drought and lost. I love Phog Allen though. The fans were awesome.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2006 Ummm, Florida State isn't a jobber this year. They have been close in every game they have played against ACC opponents and their biggest lost this season is by 8 points to Florida. Coach K has said it himself, the Duke players just wait for Reddick to bail them out. When he hasn't, they've lost (or got a hand from the refs). If a team shuts down Reddick, they shut down DUKE. I've never seen Duke this one-dimensional. Sheldon Williams can't take the load if Reddick gets shut off. If Reddick goes down, the Devils will go down with him. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 FSU is #94 in the RPI right now....seems pretty much like a jobber to me. Oh, I beg your pardon, I'll fix that: JTTS. Why don't more teams double team Redick to shut him down? Or just put a goon on him to take him out? Duke outta be worried a bit. Against FSU they had Redick put up 36 or so, Williams had 20+, and they still barely snuck by.

Against FSU they had Redick put up 36 or so, Williams had 20+, and they still barely snuck by. The RPI is inherently biased against teams that play in tough conferences since it only looks at record, opponents' record, and opponents' opponents' record. It doesn't rate the opponents individually. The Sagarin rankings are much more accurate, and they have Florida State at #30 right now. If they played in the Pac-Ten, they'd a lock to make the NCAA tournament.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted February 6, 2006 The only problem with the Sagarin ranking is that I feel it puts too much into how much you win by, especially for college hoops. For example, if FSU didn't make that meaningless 3 at the end of the game to lose by 1 to Duke... they would be lower than #30. FSU's ranking with just their wins and losses is #42... which I believe is more accurate.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 I'm telling you guys. If you've never experienced a game at Phog Allen in then you're missing out. I really want to go to Cameron now. Where are some other arenas you have to experience?
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted February 6, 2006 McHale Center. I can just imagine if Zona weren't huge underachievers this year.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 Regardless of FSU being 42, 30, 94 they are still at the end of the day a Jobber to the Stars that Duke should have little trouble trashing at home. Hell, they were favored by 16 I think. Just wondering but what is U of L in Sagarin? I know we're about 64 in the RPI. And Iggy I do agree that the RPI is a joke. Let's face it, they have a bunch of midmajors like Old Dominion, George Mason, Missouri St. and so on well ahead of U of L. We might suck this year, but I'll be damned if we couldn't trash any of those teams.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 How is Kansas now sole possessor of #2 in the Big XII and not in the Top 25 meanwhile OU and Colorado are behind them and both ranked?
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted February 6, 2006 Colorado is still ranked? That's rather surprising after the ISU drubbing. Kansas still has quite a few bad losses. So, they shouldn't be Top 25 yet.
Kurt Angle Mark 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 ACC suspends Duke/FSU game officials for double technical call GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The referees who worked the Florida State-Duke game received a one-game suspension Monday for what the league said was an unnecessary technical foul on a Seminoles player. The crew of Mike Eades, Ray Natili and Ed Corbett shouldn't have assessed a technical on Florida State's Alexander Johnson in the second half of Duke's 97-96 overtime win Saturday, said John Clougherty, coordinator of men's basketball officials for the Atlantic Coast Conference. The technical was Johnson's fifth foul, and he left the game with 9:23 remaining. Johnson had 13 points and 11 rebounds before he went to the bench. Johnson picked up his fourth foul for an intentional foul on Duke center Shelden Williams, who quickly got to his feet and bumped Johnson. Television replays showed Johnson attempting to back away. The confrontation had resulted in technicals for both players. Referees also whistled Johnson for an intentional foul against Williams in the first half. I think it'd be fun to go to The Kennel too. I've also been to Utah State's arena, it had a great crowd atmosphere.

Seems like they saved the day in the end. They won by 13. Continuing Nova's "We'll spot you 7 - 19 points and still win the game in the end" season.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 Hey Vitale, when you're done blowing JJ Redick, why don't you just go to center court and bend over for him? And UNC is only down 3 to Duke right now, 61-58.
Alro 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 Kentucky needed a win tonight and let it get away. They have to win their next five to break 20 wins since odds are they are not winning at Tennessee and Florida will likely come to Rupp and beat them. The next five are going to be tough, as South Carolina and LSU both have a good chance of beating UK. There may not even be an at-large bid in the cards at this point. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 Apparently Sampson being 0-7 in Lawrence isn't that shocking b/c I just found out that since the inception of the Big XII, 10 years ago, the Big XII South is 0-29 in Lawrence.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 If this UNC team was a year older, they beat Duke tonight. I think UConn is going to win the championship, this Duke team hasn't impressed me in the past month, while UConn has been running roughshod. If UConn wins comfortably at Nova on Monday, I then will be really sure that UConn will take it all.

Mik 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 UNC/Duke was a great game last night and only cemented my growing desire to jab something sharp and rusty into J.J. Redick's juggular. UNC went from down 17 to up 6 to down 5 in pretty rapid succession. What was Danny Green thinking driving to the hoop down 3 with about 5 seconds left? Ugh. The word is that UNC will be top 10 again next year with their recruiting class, so I'm enjoying them being the "underdogs" for one year, at least.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted February 8, 2006 While UConn is one of the most talented teams I've seen in a while... they really need to start putting together longer periods of good play if they're going to win the tourney, IMO. And outside of that, top teams like Nova and Duke have some glaring weaknesses. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a lower seed like a UCLA win it all. Guest Ether Report post Posted February 9, 2006 Pitt hosts WVU tonight. Interesting fact for that game is that this is the first time in the 140 or so meetings between the schools that both teams are ranked. EDIT: This was the 169th meeting.
Guest Ether Report post Posted February 10, 2006 Pitt holds off WVU, 57-53, to give WVU its first loss in the Big East. Equally satisfying was seeing Kevin Pittsnogle foul out with zero points.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2006 Man it's been a crazy week. Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted February 10, 2006 That Pitt-WVU was one of the worst games I've seen in a long time. Both teams shot like shit, and made lots of errors. Pitt should feel quite fortunate to win that one. Man it's been a crazy week. I went to the legendary Phog Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday and then on Wednesday night I end up at historic Gallagher-Iba arena. Now I have to cover OU/Baylor in Norman on Saturday.....seems underwhelming. Yeah... well, I'm finally going to the McKale Center in a couple weeks to hopefully watch Arizona play miserably against the Sun Devils and let them win.
