dubq 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 Looks like a mis-match if he was wrestling Tiger Mask there. Here's what went down: Akebono suffered his first failure in New Japan, on the losing side in an interesting openweight battle. He and Tiger Mask fell to Bernard & Black Tiger in a match where the difference in size between heavyweights and juniors was nothing short of incredible. Black Tiger was shrewd though, making Akebono run around and lose stamina, which Akebono explained was a reason behind his team's loss. Bernard managed to backdrop the huge man, but Akebono in turn showed extraordinary power by using the Bono Bomber (revolution-style side slam) on Bernard. At one point, Tiger Mask stood on Akebono's shoulders in the corner and dived off them with a body press. However, Bernard continued his New Japan rampage, pinning Tiger Mask in the end. Giant Bernard & Black Tiger beat Akebono & Tiger Mask (15:44) when Bernard used a corner press on Tiger Mask.

Guest CWMwasmurdered Report post Posted September 19, 2006 I'm probably going to check out the Hase retirement show from All Japan and the Marufuji title switch in NOAH within the next two days. I'm trying to reserve judgement on the switch, but as much as I like Marufuji, if they had to switch the belt it would have been better for Morishma to beat Akiyama. Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 The NOAH fans wishes will come true on the 10th of December, as the Budokan will witness a master-apprentice clash as GHC Heavyweight Champion Naomichi Marufuji defends against his former mentor Mitsuharu Misawa. NOAH "Great Voyage '06", 12/10/06 (NTV/G+) Tokyo Nippon Budokan 1. GHC Heavyweight Title: Naomichi Marufuji © vs. Mitsuharu Misawa I see Misawa getting the belt back.
The Thread Killer 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 You think? I don't know, NOAH hasn't been one to hotshot the GHC around too much, and after his defense against KENTA at the Budokan going over as well as it reportedly did...I figured Misawa might actually put the kid over. Then again, his match against Morishima last spring would have been a perfect time for him to put Morishima over...but he didn't. Then again...he did put Rikio over. I dunno. It's a toss up to me.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 I just don't think Misawa et al are behind Marufuji to the extent that Misawa will put him over. I think when push comes to shove, they won't put their top junior heavyweight over their heavyweight legend. If Marufuji retains, it'll be because of a non-finish of some kind, maybe a draw, because I just can't picture Misawa putting Marufuji over. Then again, nobody saw Marufuji beating Akiyama either.
The Thread Killer 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 True. At least Rikio was a heavyweight...I don't know if Misawa would lie down for a Junior Heavyweight. The thing about a non-finish is this...it's not going to be a DQ, and it probably won't be a count out. If it's a draw, it would be a 60 minute draw...and the idea of Misawa going 60 minutes in the condition he is in right now terrifies me. That would be pretty hard to watch, IMO. He's good for 15-20 maybe or just tags now, in my opinion.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 Misawa definitely cannot and should not go 60:00. If Misawa does indeed put Marufuji over clean, then it would be a major news story for so many reasons.
Just John 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 I think Misawa will definitely do the job here. Marufuji has been given a gigantic push this year. He's way over and his match with KENTA drew a good crowd with no support from the undercard. Giving the belt to Misawa would be such huge step backwards at this point. Maru is being pushed as the next ace, and if Akiyama laid down for him, Misawa will too. Besides, Kobashi is the real ace of the old guard now. Misawa's been playing second fiddle ever since he lost to him in 03. Misawa has nothing to lose and nothing to offer the ME scene in NOAH if he wins. Maru's ace status is still suceptible to failure if not booked properly, and he has plenty to offer at the top of the cards. They've booked him well all year, and I don't see them stopping now. As great as Misawa was, you can't count on him anymore. You have to make new stars eventually, and I think Misawa, Akiyama, and co. know that they have two big ones in KENTA and Marufuji if they play their cards right. Jobbing one of them to a broken down old guarder would not be playing their cards right.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 I'm sure Misawa and everyone else knows that he should put Marufuji over. What has me worried that it won't happen is that they see Marufuji, as great as he as and as over as he is, as just a junior heavyweight. Akiyama putting Marufuji over for the GHC Title was a big deal, but there is a world of difference between how Akiyama is seen and how Misawa is seen, not just in the eyes of the fans but in the eyes of Misawa and company. I think Akiyama might have been the one to put over Marufuji for the title because Akiyama was the one top heavyweight that they were willing to sacrifice to Marufuji in order to get over the idea that a top junior heavyweight can beat a top heavyweight, and that Marufuji’s title win doesn’t necessarily mean a radical change in philosophy. Another reason I don’t think Misawa will put Marufuji over is that beating Misawa is major deal, and I’m not convinced that Misawa will give up a rare pinfall loss to Marufuji, especially when I think it more likely that he’ll give up a rare job to put over Morishima or, if he really does put over a junior heavyweight, to KENTA. Just John 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 Misawa already put over Rikioh of all people, and while he's a legend, he hasn't had that ace-like credibility since he passed the torch to Kobashi. I see your point about using Akiyama as the sacrifice, but remember they also gave him a win over Taue as well. The way I see it, they've put over Taue and Akiyama, given him more singles and high-profile matches than anyone on the roster, and let him pick up massive amounts of winning decisions in tag matches. I can't really recall such a deliberate push in NOAH as an attempt to create a new star. You could say Rikioh, but that was more of the "shoved down our throats" variety. Unlike Rikioh, Marufuji is catching on and delivering quality matches. I really think they wanted to push Rikioh as the leader of the new generation, but when that experiment failed, they had to move to something else. Luckily, their seemingly crazy Plan B (pushing juniors) is working. It probably seemed crazy to job Jumbo to Misawa back in June of 1990, but eventually you've gotta let the new stars push the old ones aside. Misawa and Kobashi are two of the greatest wrestlers ever, but age and injuries are really catching up to them. There's just not much mileage left on those guys, and you have to put the next generation over while the old guard is at least capable of working matches. I think everyone realizes this, hence the big Maru push with the Misawa/Kawada-like rivalry with KENTA taking place.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2006 I agree with most of what you're saying. I'll just believe the intention when Marufuji actually wins.
The Thread Killer 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 HTQ, do you think Misawa is too far gone physically to do for a younger star what Jumbo did for him in 1990?

Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 HTQ, do you think Misawa is too far gone physically to do for a younger star what Jumbo did for him in 1990? I think Misawa has enough left for maybe one last ***** match with the right young star. Misawa has known for a while now that he doesn't have a lot left physically, and I think if he is going to go all out one more time, which may be the last time he can, he'll save it for the match he sees as the true passing of the torch. That's why I'm not convinced he'll put Marufuji over. I don't think he'll want to put a younger guy over unless it is for a symbolic passing of the torch to their chosen new top guy and I think they see Morishima as that guy, which is why I wouldn't be surprised to see Misawa beat Marufuji for the belt and then put over Morishima for the belt. The Thread Killer 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 That scenario would actually be pretty good and make a lot of sense. I remember reading somewhere that Misawa's eyes are really bad now and that's why he works more tag and six man matches.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 Pro Wrestling NOAH's main sponsor, the Nippon Television Network, have announced that to bring in the new year, all 39 GHC Heavyweight Title matches since NOAH's inception in 2000 will be broadcast uncut on G+, the NTV pay channel on which all NOAH live shows are broadcast. This is a great honour for NOAH. 19 hours of continuous match footage, starting on New Year's Eve 2006 and progressing till New Year's Day 2007, should be a treat for any viewers lucky enough to get the channel. Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2006 Some bad news over the Marufuji vs. KENTA match. The latest Observer says the crowd was 11,500 but the paid was only 7,000.
Pegasus Kid 0 Report post Posted November 4, 2006 I don't see Misawa putting Marufuji over. While we can all agree that Misawa's body doesn't appear to have much left, it is far more likely that they'll end up in a draw situation than anything else. Misawa with the title makes no sense. Marufuji over Misawa is too far fetched. So the only scenario left is to give Marufuji the credibility he needs (hanging with the legend) while ensuring the Misawa's stature doesn't drop by losing to a junior (whether he's the best junior in the company or not). It'll require careful booking and Marufuji won't be able to blow his load with insane moves like usual but it can be done. On a related note, I do not believe Misawa has ***** left in him. The combination of breaking down body and the fact that the crowd really doesn't believe in him as an ace anymore basically combines to form a situation that while the match will be enjoyable, it won't be anything that people will remember for years and that's what the true ***** MOTY is all about. Guest CWMwasmurdered Report post Posted November 11, 2006 I think Misawa has one or two very good to great matches left in him but not ***** level, and maybe not as a single. After he puts over Marufuji (or Morishima) he should probably drop down to old man comedy.
