spman Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 So I returned home from my trip to Washington DC to find in my mailbox a letter from the Jury Administration telling me I have to appear in April. Due to school / work reasons, I wrote in to defer it until the summer time, but my question is, have any of you ever had to go or even serve on a jury? I really have no desire to serve, so what's the best way to get out of it? A guy I work with told me that his friend had to go, and tried telling them that he hates niggers and faggots, and didn't end up having to serve, but was forced by the court to attend anger managment classes instead. I'm thinking maybe telling them I'm a Jehovah's Witness and it would be against my beliefs to serve, but they probobly get that a lot too, and have ways to find out if you're full of shit or not. What do you guys think?
Fuzzy Dunlop Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 Personally jury duty is something that I'd find exciting, but maybe I'm just weird.
Darthtiki Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 I've been served a couple times, usually it's go for a day sit in a room with a book and wait for them to call your number, then hope to god you can use the facts of the case to craft an excuse to get excused. I'm 2 for 2 on getting kicked off a jury.
Boon Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 I actually had Jury Duty today. Went there, checked in, got my number, watched Mrs. Doubtfire in the Juror's Pool Room and was dismissed by 11:15am since all cases were resolved. Won't be back for another 3 years. Got the rest of the day off- can't complain.
haws bah gawd Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 Was supposed to have it over the Summer, but got dismissed. I'm sure I'll get summoned again soon enough.
Dangerous A Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 It's usually pretty easy to get kicked off of jury's without having to resort to playing the "hates niggers and faggots" card. I think your friend is starved for attention with those kind of comments in a courtroom and he deserves anger management, even if it's not a real anger issue. Depending on what benefits your job has, it might be good to serve. I know my job pays your regular daily salary while you are serving, plus you get a small daily salary from the court for serving. One of my co-workers just served on a jury for a murder case that took 5 weeks. I'd sign on for that kind of action.
alfdogg Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 I had jury duty about a year ago and never even got called up to answer their questions.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 Have any of you ever had to go or even serve on a jury? Yes and yes. Avoid at all costs. What's the best way to get out of it? Whenever they ask the jury pool questions like, "Has anyone here known someone who got hit by a drunk driver?" Say "yes."
Richard Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 I just told them that it would interfere with my school schedule and they let me off.
RepoMan Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 Personally jury duty is something that I'd find exciting, but maybe I'm just weird. I agree, but I'm weird and a nerd who would find all the legal stuff interesting, plus when else will I have that much power?
yankovic fan Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 When I was in the court room being interviewed for the case, they brought in the defendant, and my immediate thought was "Child molestor." Turns out, that's WHAT he was on trial for. I got dismissed, but I found out he ended up pleading guilty. Everyone on the jury pool was asked about their opinions on child molestors and he listened in, and no one gave a response he wanted to hear. Judge sentenced him to 30 years in jail (he was in his mid 50s). I got a check for 50 dollars for two days "work."
kkktookmybabyaway Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Well we know you don't live in Vermont.
