Final Fantasy III (JP) for the DS

Recommended Posts

I picked up Nintendo's free product catalog promotional thingy a month or so ago, and it had a feature on this little project. Apparently there were plans to bring the never-before-released-in the US FFIII to the Nintendo DS with some new features that took advantage of the DS's innovations. But, I haven't heard anything since. Is this still in the works? And also, are there any plans to bring any more old Square RPGs onto the GBA, a la FFIV?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has the info.

As of now, it's only been announced for release in Japan... with no release date known yet. I assume it will eventually be brought over here, though.

And just so everyone knows, since most get confused on this... this isn't the game with Kefka, and Terra, and Locke, etc... this is FF3, on the NES.

Yeah, that's why I threw the JP in there, but clarification is probably in order. To my knowledge, it's the only FF game not released stateside, although it's apparently readily available on emulators.

If they release this Stateside they'd damn well better give us Chrono Trigger in portable form.

I second that. It would be sweet to be able to play CT on the lower screen, and being able to use the touch screen to select the battle commands.

I haven't thought it through, but CT seems like a game that'd be able to make good use of the dual screenage, as far as stuff like menus, but also techs, time switching, and whatnot. Dunno. Or, hell, just put a map down there. I'd shell out hard-earned cash for a GBA port, let alone a DS.

I think i'd be slightly more interested in chrono-cross as they didnt release it over here (i think anyway). Playin chrono trigger again would be cool though.

Chrono Cross was a pale imitation of what Chrono Trigger was. Instead of designing a great game based on their own knowledge and experience, they let customer opinion affect it too much.

That was probably the greatest decision that Hiroshi Yamauchi ever made; he decided that Marketing and PR would only see games after they were finished, and didn't let consumer info decide how to make his company's games.

Chrono Cross is not a very good game. It had some merits, but it was fucking terrible compared to Chrono Trigger. If FFVI is spread, I'll be happy. It's my favorite game. Even if it is easy.

FFIII sucks, if that's what we're talking about. DQIV was so beyond this game it's unreal.

'Burnie, you're Americano, right? They released Chrono Cross over here, on the PS1. In fact, I'll send you *my* copy if you want, as you seem like a nice guy, and I don't think so highly of the game either.

What?

Since when was Chrono Cross what the consumers wanted?

Unfortunatly I live in Europe (but was born in america) thanks for the offer though. I might even try getting my ps2 modded up or something. Im guessing chrono cross was a big let down then.

The main gripe that was stated by people who hate CT was that there were too few characters. FFVI had 14, I think, and people were wondering why CT only had 7. The asnwer, in my opinion, is that the fewer characters you have, the richer you can make their backgrounds and parts of the story-arch. I could do a complete run-through of CT starting at rock-bottom, go through everything in that game, and only take about 30-35 hours, without codes. ON FFVI, it takes me easily twice that. BoFII takes me about 50-60. The reason it takes that long, is because every character had a full, compelling, and interconnected story-arch.

Chrono Cross had 40+ characters. Most people probably used a select 4-7 characters, and ignored the rest. That makes for a long, boring, and tedious game. Any more than 20 characters, discounting games like Baldur's Gate, and you're going to overload the game with rather meaningless crap that just brings the quality of the game down. Also, the battle system was seriously over-complicated.

I've never heard of that.

So Square took to heart a criticism from people who didn't like the first game, and went to an absurd extreme?

Yeah, totally consumers' fault....

I know it was good for it's time but the character development in FF VI is pretty weak. Each character gets one or two moments then they just spend the rest of the time sitting on the airship.

Exactly my thoughts. And except for maybe 3 characters, none of them meant a thing in the game. And the story was just extremely confusing with the large number of plot twists, and poor explanations given.

That's not always true. The suikoden games are very well done and have great storylines. Sure there are some characters that you won't use, but it doesn't bring the quality of the game down.

The other thing that really pissed me off was the inconsistencies in the characters. The main arch of the story, was that in one world, the main character was dead, and in the other, he was alive. In one world, almost all the playable characters are snake-eating badasses, and in the other, they're worthless pussies.
