Favourite Wresters

I thought this could be fun. I'd pick pairs of wrestlers and see who everyone's favourite is between each pair. I'll try to pick pairs where people will have a hard time deciding between the two.

So here we go -- Who are your favourites?

1)Ravishing Rick Rude vs Mr. Perfect

2)Arn Anderson vs Bobby Eaton

3)Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior

So here we go -- Who are your favourites?

1)Ravishing Rick Rude vs Mr. Perfect

Perfect...Rude annoyed me, and Hennig was a far better in ring worker. Most of Rude's matches, at least in WWF, consisted of a lot of punching, headlocks, and Rude's ass being exposed for 50% of the match.

2)Arn Anderson vs Bobby Eaton

Two of the best tag team wrestlers of the '80s and early '90s...I woudl take Bobby Eaton...the Midnight Express are one of my favorite teams of all time, though I found the Anderson/Eaton DA combo to be underrated. Eaton was a little more flashy in the ring, while I found Arn to be believable but extremely basic.

3)Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior

Hogan by a HUGE mile...when these two were going into WM6, I could not stand Warrior's promos. The whole "rambling speech while staring at the hands" thing always perplexed me, even as a kid.

4)Dusty Rhodes vs Sting

Sting...who the hell's going to pick Dusty Rhodes?

5)Shawn Michaels vs Marty Jannetty

Tough choice...these guys were basically interchangable as the Rockers, but I've always been a Marty mark, for some reason. So I would pick him over Shawn.

6)Rip Rogers vs Haku aka Meng

Haku...I don't think I've seen Rogers wrestle in more than two matches, ever, and he didn't leave any kind of impression on me.

7)Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat

Steamboat...just liked his in ring style a little more. Savage pissed me off towards the end in WCW, when his matches were absolutely horrible, he had a lame feud with Kevin Nash, and he'd injure people with his elbow drop that he couldn't do properly anymore.

8)Honkey Tonk Man vs Jerry Lawler

Oh gosh...Jerry Lawler by far...much more entertaining in the ring, and a better interview.

9)Midnight Express vs Kawada/Taue

Midnight Express...as long as it's the Lane/Eaton combo.

10)Benoit vs Dynamite Kid

Benoit...Dynamite was awesome, but Benoit I think is the better overall worker, although Dynamite was probably a bit better as a high-flyer type.

11)Johnny Smith vs Marc Rocco aka Black Tiger #1

I've barely seen any Black Tiger footage, so I'll have to default to Johnny Smith.

12)Makahn Singh vs Earthquake

Ditto with Singh, so I'll have to pick Earthquake.

13)Brian Pillman vs 2 Cold Scorpio

Scorpio can do high flying, but Pillman was the overall better worker, in his prime. And who can deny Pillman based on his "Loose Cannon" gimmick?

14)Mayumi Ozaki vs Akira Hokuto

Don't care...Hokuto 'cause I've actually heard of her, I guess.

15)Atlantis vs Blue Panther

Haven't seen a huge difference in their styles, but I'll go with Atlantis.

16)Edge vs Randy Orton

Hmmm...this is tough. I like Edge, but I think Randy Orton will develop into a better, more rounded worker in the long run, so I'll pick him over the more one-dimensional Edge.

17)Andre the Giant vs the Big Show

Andre, at least in his prime, was a better worker, and I think was more captivating in the ring. Big Show seems to default to the generic WWE heavyweight style all to often, forgetting that he's supposed to be a GIANT, and wrestle like one.

18)Eddy Guerrero vs Misawa

Misawa is probably my favorite Japanese wrestler of all time, so as much as I liked Eddy, I have to go with Mitsuharu Misawa. I enjoy the elbow shot variations and the tiger drivers.

19)Tiger Mask vs RVD

RVD...Tiger Mask was a great worker, but RVD is overall more entertaining, IMO.

20)Volk Han vs Mariko Yoshida

Um...no idea. Volk Han because I've heard of him.

21)Barry Whindam vs Terry Funk

Hmmm...tough choice for me. I believe at one time Windham was one of the best workers in North America, but if this is classic Terry Funk and not "hardcore legend" Funk, I have to take him. His work with guys like Flair, and his team with Dory outshines anything Windham ever did.

22)Kurt Angle vs Dean Malenko

Well, I think Malenko was one of the best technical wrestlers of the last fifteen years, at least, but I think Angle is the better overall wrestler, so I'd have to take Angle.

23)Rey Mysterio Jr. vs The Cobra

Rey...I haven't seen much Cobra footage.

24)Bret Hart vs The Rock

Bret Hart...better in ring, for a longer period. The problem with Rock is that after he really hit his stride, he was only around for a year or two before leaving for Hollywood. Though if this were based on mic work alone, Rock would win by a mile.

25)Brock Lesnar vs Kenta Kobashi

Lesnar....one of the best big men of the last five years, and I'm a mark for his style in the ring. Kobashi is awesome, but Lesnar is one of my faves.

26)Low Ki vs American Dragon

Low Ki...seems a little more solid to me.

27)Scott Steiner vs JBL

JBL...early Scott Steiner was awesome, but he loses points because of his extremely annoying persona in WCW post '98. His crappy feud against Triple H in WWE doesn't do him any favors, either. JBL is a better worker than recent Steiner, like it or not.

28)Dynamite Kansai vs Jaguar Yokota

Not familiar with eithe rof them, but I like Dynamite Kansai's name.

29)Jun Akyima vs KENTA

Akiyama...is KENTA really that good? He seems somewhat generic to me. Akiyama at least has the exploder and cool knee moves.

30)Rip Rogers vs Tim Horner

Rogers gets listed again? I would still go with Tim Horner...although he seems to me to be the prototypical southern babyface JTTS.

Jebus, man, how about a shorter list next time?!?

And I'll have to admit that I'ver been a fan of Japanese wrestling ... so most of the "NA" vs "Japan" choices go to the North American by default.

Rude (based entirely on his WCCW & pre-WWF run in the NWA/WCW)

Arn

Pass on Hogan/Warrior. There's nothing I like about either guy.

Dusty

Jannetty

Rip Rogers

Steamboat

Jerry Lawler (fire-ball throwing Lawler is what pushes him to a win)

Midnight Express

Dynamite Kid

Pass on SmithTiger #1. I don't know enough about either guy to have an opinion.

Makahn Singh (Mainly because of Karachi Vice. But the fact that Tenta's known to be such a good guy in real life almost got him the nod)

Pillman

Pass on Ozaki/Hokuto. I don't know enough about either guy to have an opinion.

Pass on Atlantis/Blue Panther I don't know enough about either guy to have an opinion.

Orton

Andre

GuerreroRVD

Pass on Han/Yoshida. I don't know enough about either guy to have an opinion.

Tie on Windham/Funk. Sorry, I really can't pick a winner.

Malenko

Mysterio

The Rock

Lesnar

Pass on Low Ki/AmDragon. I don't know enough about either guy to have an opinion.

JBL (the stupid Big Poppa Pump era has tainted the Scotty Steiner that I really liked.)

Pass on Dynamite Kansai/Jaguar Yokota. I don't know enough about either guy to have an opinion.

Pass on Jun Akyima/KENTA. I don't know enough about either guy to have an opinion.

Horner (him & Armstrong were an underated JTTS tag team. I'd have liked to have seen them & the Killer B's go at it)

Perfect by a wide margin

Eaton but barely

Hogan by default

Sting by deafult

Marty- I've always loved him

I guess Haku

Savage over Steamboat- way more versatile, better character

Lawler definitely

Midnights

Benoit- haven't seen enough of Dynamite's earlier stuff, but I respect what he's done

11) Don't care

Quake

Pillman

14) Don't care

15) Who?

Edge by a mile and I'm not one of those Edge fanboys

Andre- he was the original

Eddy

RVD by default

20) Who?

Funk but that was close

This was the hardest one- I'll go Angle because he's provided more entertainment over the years but I love Deano

Rey Rey

Bret by about a million miles. And I have nothing against the Rock.

25) Neither

26) Not qualified to answer that one

Definitely Scotty in his hey-day, but JBL over Big Poppa Pump

28) Who?

29) Who?

30) Don't care

They have vaginas, Niskie.

1)Ravishing Rick Rude vs Mr. Perfect

Rude was awesome, but I didn't see enough of his work in WCW. Perfect is brilliant, and his run in 02 showed that.

2)Arn Anderson vs Bobby Eaton

Double A for sure. I only knew Eaton as a solid jobber. Arn is a legend and one of the best promo men ever. Everything always seemed real when Arn was in the ring or on the mic.

3)Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior

Up until the age of about 13, it was Warrior all the way. He was definitely my favourite as a kid, but Hogan is eternal. His run as Hollywood was awesome, and his nostalgia run now always makes me mark out. Hogan was a dick, but Warrior is a bigger dick. Hogan wins.

4)Dusty Rhodes vs Sting

Speaking of favourite wrestlers. Crow Sting in 1997 was the best character of the hottest period for any promotion ever. It was screwed up in the end, but that had nothing to do with Sting and everything to do with the idiots on top. Sting always brought his game. Dusty never really did it for me.

5)Shawn Michaels vs Marty Jannetty

I'm digging Jannetty's run now, but HBK has been consistently entertaining for over a decade. Not a contest.

6)Rip Rogers vs Haku aka Meng

THEMONSTERMENG~!

7)Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat

Steamboat is one of the greatest ever, but Macho had longevity and was more entertaining. I loved his run from 96-98.

8)Honkey Tonk Man vs Jerry Lawler

Both average, HTM was just annoying.

10)Benoit vs Dynamite Kid

Dynamite was brilliant for his day, but Benoit has been a top 5 wrestler since 1997.

16)Edge vs Randy Orton

I dig Orton more than most, and would have chosen him over Edge before Edge re-invented himself as the Rated R Superstar. Orton is a good talent, but he needs something extra.

17)Andre the Giant vs the Big Show

If Big Show was pushed like Andre was, it would be no contest. But he wasn't, and Andre is an immortal.

21)Barry Whindam vs Terry Funk

Windham was another solid wrestler, and Funk is embarrasing these days, but he was far more entertaining.

22)Kurt Angle vs Dean Malenko

I loved Dean, but Angle is brilliant. He's the whole package, whereas Malenko was somewhat... limited outside the ring.

24)Bret Hart vs The Rock

Never been a Hart fan aside from a quiet respect for his in-ring skills. The Rock is the most entertaining superstar of the current era.

27)Scott Steiner vs JBL

Like most people, I'm enjoying JBL now he's out of the main event, but he had nothing on Steiner. If Steiner wasn't so juiced (and wasn't so injured), he would have been a superstar. I loved him in the final days of WCW.

1)Ravishing Rick Rude vs Mr. Perfect

2)Arn Anderson vs Bobby Eaton

3)Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior

Hogan/Warrior is my favorite match of all-time. Hogan wins cause as a young mark, no one could get me as angry as Hollywood Hogan. Piper/Hogan Starrcade 96, left my 6 year old self so mad, I cried. Hogan is with out a doubt the best of all-time. Sure he left a lot to be desired but he ushered in both big booms.

4)Dusty Rhodes vs Sting

I have MANY fond memories of Crow Sting.

5)Shawn Michaels vs Marty Jannetty

Never a big Michaels fan, did however see Marty carry the local INDY champ to a great match a few years ago. Plus Angle/Jannetty was better than any of the Angle/Michaels matches.

6)Rip Rogers vs Haku aka Meng

7)Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat

8)Honkey Tonk Man vs Jerry Lawler

Actually the Champ of an Indiana AWA a few years ago. Good times.

9)Midnight Express vs Kawada/Taue

10)Benoit vs Dynamite Kid

Was Dynamite Kid better? Yes. Did Dynamite Kid make me have a near heart attack when he beat Sid for the World title? No.

11)Johnny Smith vs Marc Rocco aka Black Tiger #1

12)Makahn Singh vs Earthquake

Can't really comment.

13)Brian Pillman[/b] vs 2 Cold Scorpio

Easily.

14)Mayumi Ozaki vs Akira Hokuto

Can't really comment.

15)Atlantis vs Blue Panther

To be honest I've never seen Blue panther.

16)Edge vs Randy Orton

Love em both. Benoit/Orton SummerSlam was such a great match with a great atmosphere and story the young lion beats the vet in the vet's backyard. That match makes Orton the winner. He hasn't lived up to it since, however, although his reign was so badly handled it wasn't really his fault. He should have beat Edge and Orton/Benoit should have been Champion vs. Champion. Had it been it may have been my favorite match of all-time. (I love the Champ vs. Champ angle)

17)Andre the Giant vs the Big Show

On workrate alone, I guess. Plus The Giant was a kick ass gimmick.

18)Eddy Guerrero[/b vs Misawa

19)Tiger Mask vs RVD

I'm baised but seeing RVD live at an ECW house show was sooooooo cool

20)Volk Han vs Mariko Yoshida

Can't comment.

21)Barry Whindam vs Terry Funk

3 Words. Funk verus Flair.

22)Kurt Angle vs Dean Malenko

I love Malenko, but Angle is perhaps the greatest worker of all-time.

23)Rey Mysterio Jr. vs The Cobra

24)Bret Hart vs The Rock

I love Bret Hart sooo much, but The Rock had a bigger impact.

25)Brock Lesnar vs Kenta Kobashi

Brock vs. Rock is another favorite of mine. I'm a sucker for undeafted angles though.

26)Low Ki vs American Dragon

27)Scott Steiner vs JBL TIE

Scott Steiner's heel run was awesome but so was JBL's.

1)Ravishing Rick Rude vs Mr. Perfect - Rude seems to be overrated lately. He wasn't terrible in the ring and was a decent heel, but Henning was damn good in the ring and was a great heel.

3)Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior - Both terrible, but Hogan at least had stretches where he was competent.

4)Dusty Rhodes vs Sting - Sting's stuff with Vader is probably my favourite US feud ever. He had a rather interesting movset for early 90's US wrestling too.

6)Rip Rogers vs. Haku aka Meng - Just for the road stories.

7)Macho Man vs. Ricky Steamboat - One was really good, one was great.

8)Honkey Tonk Man vs. Jerry Lawler - Totally different levels. Honky had a good run, but Lawler had a good career.

9)Midnight Express vs. Kawada/Taue - Midnight Express are legendary, but Kawada and Taue are the best working tag-team of all time.

10)Benoit vs. Dynamite Kid - Dynamite was as good, if not better than Benoit, and he was doing the stuff 10 years earlier.

13)Brian Pillman vs 2 Cold Scorpio - Probably fairly even on in-ring work, but Pillman had huge charisma.

14)Mayumi Ozaki vs. Akira Hokuto - Christ, it's Akira friggen Hokuto.

17)Andre the Giant vs the Big Show - By a mile.

18)Eddy Guerrero vs. Misawa - Misawa's the better worker and had more high-quality matches.

19)Tiger Mask vs RVD - Not even close.

20)Volk Han vs. Mariko Yoshida - <3 Mariko

21)Barry Whindam vs. Terry Funk - Terry did everything and did it well.

22)Kurt Angle vs. Dean Malenko - Deano knows how to work smart :D

23)Rey Mysterio Jr. vs The Cobra - Takano was more impressive to me after the gimmick. Rey is Rey though, and Takano isn't in his league.

24)Bret Hart vs The Rock - Good wrestling is my main source of entertainment in pro-wrestling. Bret by 1000 AUs.

25)Brock Lesnar vs. Kenta Kobashi - See above.

26)Low Ki vs American Dragon - I love the hell out of Danielson, especially since I just saw his GBH IV match against Gibson.

27)Scott Steiner vs. JBL - Steiner was pretty bad, even in his prime. Imagine a worse version of Kurt Angle.

28)Dynamite Kansai vs. Jaguar Yokota - Stiffness~! Splash mountain! Hurrah.

29)Jun Akyima vs KENTA - Akiyama's dickery wins many internets.

1)Ravishing Rick Rude vs Mr. Perfect: SO close. 2 ofmy all-time favs. I gotta go with Rude. I loved Perfect's stuff as much as anyone else, but I hated Rude so much as a little kid, that it made me appreciate his work that much more when I got older.

2)Arn Anderson vs Bobby Eaton- Double A. Most of what I've seen of Eaton is limited to the Bluebloods, or him being a jobber in mid-late 90's WCW. I'd have to see more of his good stuff before I could pick him over Arn in good consience.

3)Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior- Hogan, w/o Warrior, the buisness would be the same, who can say where it would be today without Hogan, even though a lot of his matches sucked.

4)Dusty Rhodes vs Sting- Sting. Dusty Rhodes was one of those wrestlers I just never got. Funny guy, and I loved him on commentary, but I never felt the love for his hokey, outdated offense. I could change this, maybe if I saw more of his his early work, but for now my pick is the Stinger.

5)Shawn Michaels vs Marty Jannetty- Michaels, just because of the way both men's carreers went. Who knows what Janetty could have done had things went diffrent.

6)Rip Rogers vs Haku aka Meng- Depends on weather we'retalking 80's WWF Haku or THE MONSTER MENG. Actually who cares it's Rip Rogers anyway. I'll take Meng/Haku.

7)Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat- Macho Man. I'm probably going to get flamed for this but screw it. Not to say I don't like Steamboat, he is defenently the best pure wrestler. I just found Savage more entertaining. This one isn't a question of quality, just personal preference. To set the record straight I'm talking pre-1993 Savage.

8)Honkey Tonk Man vs Jerry Lawler- Lawler. I loved HTM's IC title reign though.

9)Midnight Express vs Kawada/Taue- MX

10)Benoit vs Dynamite Kid- This is a toughie. I'll have to go with Benoit, just because I've seen more of his stuff.

11)Johnny Smith vs Marc Rocco aka Black Tiger #1- coudn't say

12)Makahn Singh vs Earthquake- Earthquake.

13)Brian Pillman vs 2 Cold Scorpio- Pillman, though any non-WWF Scorpio rocked as well. Just can't pick him over Pillman though.

14)Mayumi Ozaki vs Akira Hokuto- Tails. I mean.....Mayumi Ozaki

15)Atlantis vs Blue Panther- Can't really say on this one. Haven't seen either to be honest.

16)Edge vs Randy Orton- Edge. I was never that big of a fan of Orton's.

17)Andre the Giant vs the Big Show- Andre, just scarier, more dominating, and a bigger physical force, but that is not nessicarily the Big Show's fault.

18)Eddy Guerrero vs Misawa- Eddie

19)Tiger Mask vs RVD- Tiger Mask, really close.

20)Volk Han vs Mariko Yoshida- can't really say.

21)Barry Whindam vs Terry Funk- Old School Terry Funk wins, but Windham over late-era Terry Funk. I have tons of respect for the guy, but his later matches haven't been some of my favs. I loved the Barely Legal main though.

22)Kurt Angle vs Dean Malenko- Angle, but again it's really fucking close. Angle wins by a notch for his superior mic work and charisma. Dean was such a badass though.

23)Rey Mysterio Jr. vs The Cobra- Mysterio Jr. JR. JR. theres a Jr. at the end of his name WWE! Dammit I hate little annoying things like that. (not Rey, the fact that they removed the Jr.)

24)Bret Hart vs The Rock- Ohhh tough, tough choice. Going by ring work only, Bret seems like the obvious choice. But going by mic work it's all Rock here. I'll say Bret, just 'cause he was my idol as a little kid.

25)Brock Lesnar vs Kenta Kobashi- Kenta Kobashi

26)Low Ki vs American Dragon- Low Ki, but very close.

27)Scott Steiner vs JBL- Scott Steiner. JBL bores the living shit out of me. The only matches of his I liked were against Eddie. Steiner may suck in the ring nowadays, but in the early 90's he was a true wrestling god. JBL=Naps IMO.

28)Dynamite Kansai vs Jaguar Yokota- Can't really say, don't watch alot of Joshi. From what I've heard Jaguar Yokota is amazing though.

29)Jun Akyima vs KENTA- KENTA

30)Rip Rogers vs Tim Horner- Gonna have to go with a big, fat, Who Cares on this one.

That was fun, and it indirectly made me realize that I should watch a lot more Dynamite Kid matches.

Niskie, I think Kansai and Yokota would kill you for calling them guys. Anyway, I'll only answer a few of these because I'm tired and there are a lot.

3)Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior

I've always been a closet Hulkamaniac, but I've never seen a Hogan match as compelling as Warrior vs. Savage, which might be my favorite North American match. BUT... that match was all Savage. I pick Hogan.

5)Shawn Michaels vs Marty Jannetty

Marty didn't have the opportunities that Shawn had, but I find him much more interesting to watch. And his match with Angle kills anything Shawn has done recently, except Shawn's own match with Angle at Mania.

7)Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat

Macho was in my favorite WWF match ever, or at least Top 3. Steamboat was in my favorite NWA match ever. I'll go with Steamboat, since the match in question (vs. Flair, of course) is better than the Savage one. I do love them both, though.

9)Midnight Express vs Kawada/Taue

I've never seen a Midnights match, which is horrifying. But I HIGHLY doubt that they can match the greatness of the Holy Demon Army. What an awesome name.

10)Benoit vs Dynamite Kid

I've loved what little Dynamite I've been exposed to, but Benoit might be the greatest wrestler I've ever seen that isn't named Akira Motherfucking Hokuto.

14)Mayumi Ozaki vs Akira Hokuto

Hokuto can claim the greatest single match performance (and greatest match, probably) in wrestling history, and that's enough for me. No wrestler has EVER been better at making an emotional connection with the audience.

15)Atlantis vs Blue Panther

I've only seen one match from each of them, and the Atlantis match was better. Plus, he's unbelievably cool. But one match is not enough, even though it was for Hokuto. I should watch more lucha.

16)Edge vs Randy Orton

Orton, quite easily. His recent work in particular obliterates anything Edge has done. Of course, that work includes matches with Rey, Benoit, and Finlay, while Edge has been feuding with John Cena and Hacksaw Jim Duggan.

18)Eddy Guerrero vs Misawa

I love both these guys so very much. Even if he was alive, however, I couldn't bring myself to vote against Eddie.

22)Kurt Angle vs Dean Malenko

I'm a big Angle fan, but Malenko is just fascinating to watch. And Angle has been sucking big-time lately.

24)Bret Hart vs The Rock

Bret. Just compare their Sharpshooters.

25)Brock Lesnar vs Kenta Kobashi

Kobashi. He's Kenta Kobashi, for Christ's sake.

26)Low Ki vs American Dragon

Low Ki is an incredible heel. Danielson is just plain incredible.
