Retro screenings.....

Recommended Posts

One of the big theaters in town here sceens an older movie every Thursday. So far the movies have been common enough to make sure it draws, but under the radar enough that they don't turn away an angry overflow mob. The first week was Army of Darkness, the following week was The Big Lewboski, and this thursday is Back to the Future. From what a frield told me the crowds that pack the theater are rowdy, and basically people who have seen the film numerous times, and are there to have a good time with fellow film lovers. Anyone else have this sort of thing in their town on a regular basis?

No.

Although yesterday I was driving in some place I've never been before, came across a closed down little theater that still had its marquee up: The final two films it presented? Along Came a Spider and Croc. Dundee III.

We have a theater in town that shows midnight movies on Friday and Saturday Night. I've seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pulp Fiction, The Princess Bride, Clerks, Mallrats, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Raiders of the Lost Ark at their showings.

One week an employee spoke to the crowd before the movie to plug Back to the Future as the next weeks movie. He mentioned they were going to try and get a real Delorian to park in front of the theater the next weekend and said "so if anyone likes old cars or cocain..."

Mike since you live near Sacramento, there is the parkway in Oakland. They normally play stuff that released a bit ago but got to the point no one is really seeing it in major theaters anymore. Every once in awhile they play older movies, mainly to go with the holidays and they also show the Rocky Horror Picture Show every saturday night at midnight. Which I'm apart of that cast that performs it as well. Its fun times.

In Dayton a theater shows retro movies once a week during the month of October. Last year it was The Blue Velvet, Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, Brazil & Alien.

We haven't even had a movie theatre here in a few years, and I doubt the new one they're building right now will show anything but new releases.

What role do you play?

I'm actually on the lighting crew for the show.

In Louisville this sort of thing is sort of hit or miss. I have seen the 1933 King Kong and The Big Sleep at Baxter Avenue theaters, but not much of late. Gone With the Wind also had a revival at the old Showcase Cinemas (it is closed now).

The Palace is the theater that shows the Summer Series of "classics." I put that in quotes because I'm not sure Jurassic Park is really old enough at this point to be considered an all out classic. I remember when that theater reopened and the first thing they showed was Gold Diggers of 1935 (perhaps that was the first movie shown at The Palace when it originally opened?). I'd rather them show that type of obscure stuff than Jurassic Park, which I saw when it came out anyway.
