BX 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2006 30 seconds into the online stream, and I love this album.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2006 I listened to the first three tracks from the stream. It's certainly better than anything he's done in a long time, but still nothing great. I'm just basing this off three songs, though; I would've listened to more, but I didn't have the patience to deal with the way the stream was set up. I'll try again tomorrow, maybe. ... 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2006 Can't listen to it, for whatever reason. It'll be out in a couple of weeks anyway. He's got the same band behind him that he did the most part of "Freedom." Crazy Horse just wouldn't be right for this kind of material.
... 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2006 WHAT... THE... FUCK. I know this is supposed to be in the vein of Dylan, Ochs, et al, and I am pleased to see he's back working with Niko Bolas. But, for God's sake, what the hell are saying here that's NEW? This is just bandwagon jumping. The music is fine (probably the best backing band since Harvest Moon) but as far as making a statement goes... well it doesn't. Second, just because you can get a 100 voice choir doesn't mean you NEED TO USE A 100 VOICE CHOIR. I believe this is the Vocoder Clause, first instated after "A Man Needs A Maid" was cut. I give it a couple more listens for the benefit of the doubt, but jesus, Neil, you could be doing so much more here.
Guest Felonies! Report post Posted May 10, 2006 I just downloaded "Let's Impeach The President." This is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Aurally, it's a fucking mess. The guitars and drums sound like they're mixed in front of the big dumb choir, who must've fit this session in right before Sufjan Stevens needed them for Missouri or something. (Song in question: "'Show Me' Your Spirit!") Sticking the opening bars of Taps at the beginning is ham-fisted, so I guess it does its job and sets the tone. The lyrics in question could've come from a post on The Democratic Underground, rather than Neil Young. I expect better than "LET'S IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT!!!' Why bother saying anything about the "Flip! Flop!" part? Ugh. Congratulations, Neil Young, you're a joke.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2006 Yeah...that song does really suck.
Guest Felonies! Report post Posted May 10, 2006 See, as a fan of Neil Young and...not quite a fan of George Bush, I was hoping to get some great anthem. Unfortunately, he fell victim to Sledgehammer Of Intent, got his facts wrong ("Dividing our country into colors" is more a media creation than one of the GOP or Bush himself), and failed to even provide a decent soundscape for his message, as he's just got bland guitar lines, a pretentious choir, and a cheesy trumpet line. The left will eat it up with a spoon, though. With a name like "Let's Impeach The President," it doesn't have to be good.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2006 I hope he doesnt play 'Impeach the President' on the CSNY tour. Some of the other tracks are ok...a bit of the Greendale sound (which I really liked, especially the live show) but without the CrazyHorse crunch. But that choir in 'Impeach' is just awful. Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2006 For those of us who are sick of all this hippy, anti-war rock, National Review brings us the Greatest 50 Conservative Rock Songs. You can tell they had to reach a little bit. Creed? Blink 182? Kid Rock? In that same vein, The Right Brothers. Zell Miller RIIIIIGHT!
Guest Felonies! Report post Posted May 29, 2006 God, what a terrible list. Is this what happens when a conservative gets high in his friend's basement? "The Battle of Evermore" is an allegory for the Cold War? John Lennon wrote a song that was conservative? Give me a fucking break. Even I wouldn't reach this far. Borderline insulting.
