NHL 2006 Playoffs thread...

The Oilers, mainly Shawn Horcoff is complaining that Brind'Amour has been cheating in the face-off circle, by entering on an angle to win the draw.

As long of a time as he has been an effective faceoff winner, I don't think one team's argument should be taken too seriously. As badly as Brind'Amour beat them in the faceoff circle, they should be looking for some reason why.

It's not just the Oilers, Laviolette complained about the same thing, so did Ruff IIRC. But that's besides the point, it's pretty much accepted that whoever cheats better will win the faceoff. The reason that Horcoff is complaining is because when he tries the same things, he gets kicked off the dot, so the linesmen and refs are overlooking Brind'Amour because he's the vet.

The officials slant every other call against the Hurricanes, I don't understand why they would suddenly want to help Rod Brind'Amour.

Anyone watch the classic NHL games they had on OLN last night? Great stuff, although after seeing the crowds in those games I can't understand why some people still say the Hurricanes' fans aren't loud enough throughout games. Detroit's crowd was pretty much silent the entire game and Philadelphia's crowd wasn't much better.

NCAA Women's softball got greater ratings than the 1st game of the Cup Finals. Ouch.

OLN's not in nearly as many markets as ESPN.

Ouch.

I'm aware of that, but NCAA Women's softball is not one of the "four major sports" and we're not comparing it to a game in midseason. It's embarassing no matter how you slice it that more people chose to watch 'Zona/NW than Oilers/'Canes.

It's embarrassing but not the end of the world. The NHL's popularity isn't going to be sky-high after a labor dispute, especially when their main cable network isn't in every major market yet. It's going to be a long road back, but they have things going for them right now. OLN is bending over backwards for them, they'll be getting picked up in new markets next season for sure, the playoffs have been pretty good, and there is a wealth of young, marketable stars that fans are actually able to *GASP* watch! Instead of ESPN's Red Wings Hockey Night, there are games between two lesser known teams, showcasing their stars.

The NHL is never going to get back to the type of popularity that it once had. Football is just WAY too popular and easy to like. But they are on the right track to clearing their names and getting back in the good graces of the public. It's not going to happen overnight, but it will happen.

I'd say the league desperately needs to get out of their contract with OLN, but I don't know where else they'd go. ESPN obviously doesn't want hockey, and FSN is too regional.

For those reasons, I say stick with OLN. They've done an admirable job and without them, the NHL would have been on public access television all season. They are remaking their channel to accomodate for hockey, I'd say give them a few more years at least. With ESPN, you know what you're getting (Red Wings, Avs, Stars, Flyers) and FSN does a decent job with regional coverage, but it's just that. Regional. It's the same type of thing that baseball has. National broadcast (ESPN and FOX) and a flurry of regional ones as well (FSN, NESN, YES, etc.)

Do you really think people in big markets like New York, LA, and Philly would make plans to sit around a tv and watch a team from Edmonton and a team from Carolina play in a sport that isn't taken seriously? It's the sad truth but that's the way it is. If it was the Kings and Rangers in the final ratings might be slightly different.

VANCOUVER (CP) - The men's and women's hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics will be played on the smaller, NHL-sized ice surface, a move that will save organizers of the Vancouver Games $10 million in construction costs.

Bunk. It'll blatantly benefit the Canadian team in what will probably be the last time we see NHLers in the Olympics, if that. This is borderline cheating.

I am watching the Finals even though my team is not it. I am a hockey fan. I understand what you are saying.

OLN is trying to expand and the NHL is helping them. Personally, I would prefer the Finals on NBC because it's a national network.

As for the Islanders, I do not think Neil Smith should be the GM. I heard Ted Nolan is overrated cause he had Hasek in net.

My father thought the kicking goal should have been waived off.

The shot from above clearly shows that the puck changed direction once when it hit his skate and then changed direction again when it hit his stick.

When Bob and Harry said that it was a no-brainer I thought for sure it was going to be waived off because I usually go against everything they say. The Oilers were down 2 games to the Sharks but this is going to be a lot tougher. If they want to win game 3 they are going to have to stay out of the box. Jussi wasn't bad in game 2 but he could play a little better.

Initially, I also thought that it had skipped over his stick. It was the above-the-goal view that changed the minds of the announcers that changed my mind.

I don't think there's anything borderline about it. The size of the ice is explicitly laid out in the IIHF rules.

That was pathetic. No teamplay by the Oilers, everyone was playing their own little game of shinny. In the few opportunities where a nice play was set up, they wouldn't take the shot and would pass it on looking for the pretty play. Markkanen played exactly as we expected, but he is really bad at positioning himself so that he can do anything with his rebounds. Carolina played a solid game, the Oilers played like this was an exhibition. They deserved to lose.

That said, I had some problems with the officiating. Samsonov was pushed into Ward, gets goaltender interference. Moreau's roughing call was questionable at best, and based on the way many other hits were not called, should have been left alone. Smyth gets plastered to the ice 30 feet away from the play, no penalty. Smyth gets cross-checked to the ice and his errant stick hits the Carolina player (sorry, can't remember the name) - only Smyth gets called. Laraque's hit on Ladd was dirty, I don't think we'll see Laraque again this season.

Two days off before the next game, hopefully they can get their team back together. I'm not ready for this series to be over so soon.

Fans on the Edmonton Oilers' message board want the Oilers to start trying to injure Cam Ward...idiots. You also have to laugh at the fact that they felt game two would be the game that decided the series, until they were blown out. Talk shit about the fans, talk shit about the luck, but at the end of the series the 'Canes will be the team with the Cup.

Am I the only one to get a tear in my eye when the Oilers came out?
