Hawk 34 Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 It's the end of the school year and all of us(mostly) college students know about the gruesome agony of the night before the finals. I usually just shut out the world around me. I put the away message up, I mute the tv if there is some sporting event on that i need to keep tabs on (the nba in this case), turn off the lights, light a couple candles and put on some quiet but not too quiet music. Problem is? I'm worn out of my "study" music. What you people use for this type of situation?
Edwin MacPhisto Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 DJ Shadow, The Go! Team, Mike Patton & the Dillinger Escape Plan. Lots of stuff that's busy and interesting but largely lyric-free, or at least fuzzy. Keeps you from nodding off but doesn't distract you too much. I also get a lot of mileage out of albums I know by heart. Purple Rain is good for 45 strong minutes of work.
vivalaultra Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Europe's "Final Countdown" on endless repeat. Yeah, baby~!
Hawk 34 Posted May 3, 2006 Author Report Posted May 3, 2006 DEP was a good suggestion, I was going between Massive Attack, Pantera and Floyd eariler but I think I'll stick with DEP.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Just get Neurosis' Souls at Zero and you're set.
Steviekick Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Europe's "Final Countdown" on endless repeat. Yeah, baby~! I play that constantly while at work.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Keiko Matsui, a Japanese jazz piantist, is good, as are some more jammy Phil Lesh shows, but I'd stay with instrumental things
Gary Floyd Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Aphex Twin's I Care Because You Do, Ambient Works 85-92, Ambient Works II, Analogue Bubblebath III, and the Analord series are great. Also, try the Orb, some Portishead, some Mick Harris solo projects (Scorn, Lull), Pink Floyd's Echoes and Obscured by Clouds, Brian Eno's ambient work, Cabaret Voltaire's 90's techno albums, and Tangerine Dream. Great homework music there.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 The new Chili Peppers double-CD helped me through my last final, which was to basically write a shitload of HTML and document a project. I'm not even a big fan of them, but that might change. I'm totally loving all the different sounds on the CDs and it made my day in my office relaxing.
Guest Felonies! Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Brian Eno, Christopher O'Riley's Radiohead interpretations*, Cabaret Voltaire, Feel Good Lost, Tindersticks, Neu!, Erik Satie, and Claude Debussy is what I have planned. *Why does everyone rip on O'Riley's stuff? He does a good job of arranging the stuff for solo piano. If it's some idea that Thom Yorke's work cannot be touched by others, that's bullshit. "Thinking About You" is way cooler on piano. Hey Sledge, how was Memphis, by the way.
k thx Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Thinking About You was best in it's original punk form. At Uni, I studied to Jeff Buckley. But really, anything you're really familiar with. Stuff you wont get distracted by, just stuff you know.
k thx Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 It rocks and you know it. It's got a bass solo! A BASS SOLO!
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Felonies, Memphis was a shithole town, but I was only there for 2 days. 311 Day was great, lots of pot, great atmosphere, cool fans, the works. Beale Street is one of the few not "super ghetto" areas in Memphis. When we rolled up at 7 AM it looked like 28 Days Later, just random people wandering around the empty streets every few minutes. Mid-South Coliseum was quite enjoyable.
Guest Felonies! Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Yeah, I think I warned of that. You have to be very selective in where you go, i.e. like one block of town.
