Most Overrated/Underrated MLB Players

Recommended Posts

Indeed. I was giddy last season when Kearns was popping up frequently in Cubs-related trade talks. Instead, we got a $16 million dollar piece of poop.

Has anyone mentioned Soriano yet for being overrated? I keep seeing Cubs fans busting Hendry's chops for not going after him, but he'd be no different than most of their current hitters: no patience, terrible OBP, too homer-happy. Seriously, his OBP is fairly horrible for a guy that's so widely praised. Plus I can field better than he can.

Can't believe I forgot Soriano. He's possibly #1.

Yeah but Soriano is always getting dogged for not being able to hit on the road, having no OBP skills and being poor defensively, but he's not that bad especially when you figure in his speed and power. He's strung together 5 or so good seasons in a row. He's more overpaid than overrated. Most analysts thought he'd die when he moved to RFK, but things have been fine thus far.

Two more pitchers that popped to mind just now that are quite underrated, methinks-Aaron Harang and John Patterson...especially Patterson. If he would've gotten some run support last year, he could've won 16 or 17 games.

Harang, is finally coming into his own this season. I don't think he qualifies as under-rated.

Yeah...maybe not Harang, but I've just always enjoyed his work, so it's good to see him start to succeed. Hopefully if he continues this good year that he's having so far, he'll get some recognition.

I'd say that Carlos Delgado is pretty underrated considering he's only been an All-Star twice but entering tonight his career averages are .284/.393/.560 with 381 HR & 1201 RBI. He's a shitty fielder but is a professional hitter with a lot of pop and he'll only be 34 next month. He could come close to 500 HR and 1500 RBI and isn't really thought of all that highly nationally.

Did anyone mention Chris Capuano as being underrated?

18 wins last year and a great lefty.

He's on his way, but it seems like he struggles with his command. Unless he's facing the Cubs, that is.

I've got one or two for the underrated pile.

Kevin Mench and Matt Holliday. Hell, you could throw Garrett Atkins on there.

Mench is overrated. A 106 career ERA+ and .334 career OBP is not impressive. Particularly from a corner outfielder playing in such a good hitters' park. Same with Matt Holliday. He produced a 114 OPS+ last season. That's good. It's not great, and he's a corner outfielder. And Atkins put together a .773 OPS last year, in Coors Field! Look at what all those guys have in common. Big time hitters' parks.

I'm not going to argue it. How much weight do you put into where they play?

Right after I posted the post you quoted, I wanted to take it back. I didn't though, because if I say something dumb I want someone to call me out on it.

I'm not a stathead, that's why I ask.

OPS+ is a good indicator because it adjusts for park factors. The best tool is to look at run production, and look at home field stats. If the average game in such a park sees nine runs, and how much does a player contribute per game, and so on. That's too much to expect from the average fan, so I stick with OPS+.

It's worth noting that this isn't limited to hitters' parks. Jay Gibbons, IMO, is perenially overrated. Every year fans are convinced that he'll produce a 30 HR season despite the minor problem that he's never done it before. Gibbons sports a gaudy .315 career OBP. You have to take into account typical production at each position. If a player produced like Kevin Mench and played at second base, he'd be tremendously valuable.

Can we add Jose Guillen? He's never been considered a superstar or anything, but the praise he does get seems unwarranted. I saw some Cubs fans saying we should trade for him (going as far as to say they should trade multiple prospects). I recalled how bad he's been this season and decided to compare his offensive stats to Jacque Jones'. Not that surprisingly, Jones has more strikeouts, but sports better figures in homer, walks, average, and OBP. He's tied with him for RBIs.

But yeah, a rightfielder (Guillen) who's batting in the .240s with a sub-300 OBP and only five homers shouldn't be considered anything to look twice at.

Underrated:

Lance Berkman

Brandon Webb

Roy Halladay

Felipe Lopez

Mark Buehrle

Chase Utley

Matt Holliday

Jonny Gomes

Grady Sizemore

I consider most of those guys either among the best in baseball or perenial all-stars in the making. I suppose they're not "underrated" per se, but if you ask the average baseball fan about them they don't realize how good they are. Berkman, Halladay and Buehrle for example have been outstanding for several years now yet they're never mentioned in the same breath as other elite players at the same positions.

Overrated:

Blalock

Edmonds

Soriano

Zambrano

Pierre

Beltre

How in the world is Carlos Zambrano overrated?

I'll bet the average fan wouldn't even know he played for the Cubs if his tantrums didn't get so much press.

I don't know. I'm drunk, I haven't posted here in months, and these overrated/underrated topics always confuse me

Guest Princess Leena
Alex Rodriguez is by far the most overrated player in all of sports.

Fuck you.

Leena probably just made his day with that proposition.

Fuck you is a command, thus the subject is an implied you, that is, you fuck you, which is reflexive, i.e. fuck yourself. Leena's not even a part of the fucking, so he shouldn't get TOO excited, unless he's into that.

Yes, get rid of A-Rod, smart move. He would be free for all of three seconds. And besides, whatever team he goes to, he will be SS again, and if he stays in the AL, yet another Golden Glove "taken" from Jeter.

For overrated, Bonds...

For any pitcher who has the balls to pitch to him, will know you can easily strike him out. Yet the league plays pussy to a guy who could stike out or pop out with smart pitching. Plus, with his speed, make him beat balls in to the ground, not tough work.
