Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2006 I've noticed that everyone has a different opinion on tattoos and what's acceptable to get and what's not. So I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on tattoos is. Do you think they have to mean something? Do you think you should ever get a girls name tattooed on you? Your name? Tribal art? Barbed wire(yeah shoot me i hate those)? Anything? I personally think they should mean something and you should be absolutely sure it's what you want. Because while not being permanent anymore I hear the removal process hurts and is expensive. What do you guys think? One of the tattoos I don't think people should get are band tattoos. People grow out of music. My brother when he was 16 got an AFI tattoo. Now he's 21 and doesn't even listen to AFI.
yankovic fan 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2006 Unless it is your children, names are always a bad idea. Also things like "Spring Break 1998!!!!" make for terrible tattoos as well. I myself am not a tattoo person, but I won't stand in the way of someone that wants one. Legally speaking, where I live, a person must be 100% sober when getting a tattoo but that is hardly the case. They (unethically) make most of their revenue off of drunk people.
CanadianChick 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2006 I think it should mean something. The lower back tattoos that a lot of girls got a couple years ago is exactly what one shouldn't get, as most of the time they are meaningless. Other than that, I don't mind tattoos in the slightest. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted May 13, 2006 Agreed with CC. Some tattoos are completely moronic to get, and look as if they've had zero thought put into them. Which is why our generation will grow up to be a bunch of tribal art/barbed-wire wearing saggy skinned old folks. With that said, the only way I'd agree with that kind of design is if it's surrounding or connecting tattoos together as I plan to, sort of. Not quite a tribal tattoo or anything, but a nice design that makes them all come together well. I think names and dates are bad, unless you're remembering someone very important to you who died. I'm iffy on sports teams logos, as well. Just keep in mind whatever's personal to you and what you're comfortable with being displayed to everyone, also. I don't think I'd be comfortable with putting my name on myself because there might be some people who I don't want knowing who I am or anything. Quotes, especially more obscure ones that have a personal/philosophical meaning to you, I think are pretty damn cool.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 What about animals? How does everyone feel about animals? I was thinking of my zodiac since I'm a Leo and it could have the potential to be really cool.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted May 14, 2006 Animals are relatively white trash, or very cool depending on your heritage and/or the animal you choose. I'm getting my horoscope sign tattooed on the back of my neck, and my planet sign tattooed elsewhere as well. Astrology stuff's cool as long as you know what you're symbolizing. Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 The bicep band is lame. So is foreign lettering and tribal, unless it's actually a part of your culture or you know for certain what those symbols mean, since there's a high enough chance the artist doesn't know either or doesn't care and can just as easily fuck it up. That doesn't go for all of them and highly reputable places have a lesser chance of that happening, but it's still better to be sure of what you're getting at all times, which really goes for all tattoos. You just don't want to end up with 'I eat cocks' on your forearm in Japanese. Hell, just one modification to one of those kanji can completely change the meaning of the tattoo. As people have said, try to make sure it means something to you and it's not just a spur of the moment drunk thing. Make an attempt to avoid the pre-fab art out of tattoo books, unless it serves as the base to be modified by the artist and given a personal spin. The best tattoos are the ones that are given time and consideration. Animals are fine, I think. I don't care. A little trashy, though, as VX said. Personally, I fluctuate between tattoos that are chosen purely for look and those which carry meaning. I guess if it's done well enough I don't have a problem with the former, as long as it's not as trite as one of those armbands and can't be found in a pre-fab book that you can find in any shop. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 About the foreign lettering thing, a few years ago when it was all the rage to get the Japanese symbols for various things tattooed on the back of your neck, this guy I know went to this tattoo place in Louisiana...probably drunk, and got some random Japanese symbols on the back of his neck, which turned out to mean something like "I'm gay and I have a little penis" or something similar. My girlfriend said she'd divorce me if I got any tattoos, but I do kinda have a desire to get the Astros star logo tattooed on my wrist. But, then again, I'm planning on going in to teaching, so they probably won't allow visible tattoos.
Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 I should mention I don't have a problem with sports logos either, though they're kind of in that same category as animals. But yeah, if you're planning to get into a line of work where tattoos may be frowned upon, it's better to place them where they can be covered up easily. I've been designing my future tattoo for awhile now and I made a decision to get it on my 25th birthday. I figure if i means something to me now, it'll still mean something to me at 25. I guess, I got 5 more years of life to go through to really decide what I want to represent for myself. When I was 18, I was certain I wanted this skull tattoo on my left shoulder, I'm glad I was wise enough to not do it. I am currently trying to blend a tattoo that'll have a certain inspirational lyric that I always connected with and use that with an image of an eye(I'm hoping to use my future wife's eye as my final motivation for that specific eye). vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 Yeah, my girlfriend would divorce me. We're young, but we act like a couple that's been married for 30 years (Oy vey! You took my triple word score!). About the wrist-I just think it would look cool on the wrist, and besides, if I had it on my shoulder, I'd have to lift up my shirt sleeve to let people see it. My brother, who is about 3/4 of the way to a full upper body sleeve, has one of the...best/worst tattoo ideas I've heard of...and it was probably really painful. Anyway, he got "Fuck You" tattooed on the inside part of his bottom lip. Yeah, he loves showing that one off...

Guest The Satanic Angel Report post Posted May 14, 2006 My thoughts on tattoos: I have four. They all have meaning to me. The only kind I don't have is a tribal, though I do plan on one of those for a lower back piece (to say I love it from behind). First tattoo: I love fantasy and hate reality. It will never get old. Second tattoo: Eternal love or yeong lian. You have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. Third tattoo: Yes, Good Luck Bear. He was my favorite of all the Care Bears, and now good luck is always with me. He's been dressed up a bit since that photo, but don't have any recent ones. Fourth tattoo: More of the fantasy. Part of a work-in-progress. There will be another dragon with a wizard fighting the epic good vs. evil.. once I get enough saved for another tattoo.. and a design sketched up. All my tattoos are original, not picked from the walls of the shop. And they're all in places where you'll never see them unless I show it to you. The one on my ankle is covered 95% of the time. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 Well I'm trying to figure out what kind of Lion I want to get. Because I don't really believe in astrology but everything I read describing Leo's always describes me perfectly. I'm not sure if I want this lions head roaring on my shoulder or if I want something like the Grifter symbol from FF8. I always thought it was kind of cool looking and it looks a little regal. I would also never get a tattoo where I can't cover it. I'm also going to get a four-leaf clover because I'm irish. Yeah the Japanese lettering is horrible. Especially because a lot of times I'll see guys with Kanji and they'll say "It's my name!" but Kanji doesn't symbolize someone's name as far as I know. I'm getting my horoscope sign tattooed on the back of my neck, and my planet sign tattooed elsewhere as well. Astrology stuff's cool as long as you know what you're symbolizing. Animals are pretty good if you have some heritage behind it. Both my first and last name have something to do with a lion/spirit of a lion so something like that is what I've always wanted, preferrably something larger and sprawling on my back. Do you actually believe in astrology enough to use its symbols? I think tattooing your name on yourself is pretty dumb, but I wouldn't worry about people knowing who I am. That seems a little out there, you in trouble with the law or something? For the record, most MMA fighters have some of the worst tatt's I've ever seen. Aleksander Emelienenko is a notable exception. Darthtiki 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 I'm still on the fence about getting one, but one thing that should be a major ink no-no is a tat on the small of the back if you're a guy ala Lance Hoyt. The band ink is iffy to me, yes musical tastes change and I agree getting the name is dumb but if the band has a cool symbol then at least you can write it off as a cool design. My prospective tat does have to do with my favorite band, but it also is part of something larger because it's a mark that shows I accomplished one of my dreams (That is moving to Orange County) As for the arm bands, most are absolutely dumb, gotten by a bunch of roided out loser poser who thinks it makes them look tough as they go into their thrid badly executed rep at the local health club. My buddy wants to get one, a film strip band that is attached to a reel on his pec or his shoulder blade and in each frame have the name or art from his films that he directs. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 I have the Decepticon symbol on my right arm...if I was going to regret it, I wouldn't have got it. The Transformers were my all-time favorite thing growing up. on my left arm, scrolling vertically, I have my daughter's name in a style similar to the NY on Yankees merchandise. I'll be getting something on my right arm above the Decepticon tatt that represents my soon-to-arrive son.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 14, 2006 Vitor's is worse in the way of religion. Cabbage has got some fucking ugly ink. There was one that I was thinking of. My grandpa is dying of lung cancer. He's the toughest person I know and I respect the hell out of him and he means a lot to me. Instead of taking on my father's last name I took on his last name when I was born because I was the only male grandson. My dad did it so that my grandpa could keep his name alive since I was the only one possible to do it. Well he's about to die and I'll be the only one possible left to keep our last name alive. I was thinking of getting the name tattooed underneath a four leaf clover or something like that(since it's an irish name).
