VHS is dead

Recommended Posts

Starting today Hollywood Video is selling all VHS tapes in the store in a 5 for $15 deal to make room for DVD. The only place to get VHS tapes now will be the local mom & pop store because Blockbuster cleared out its library of tapes years ago. So run to the Hollywood Video and grab those WCW tapes before the sports section disappears!

Blockbuster here still has quite a few VHS. Although, they might be buy only. I don't go there often.

I wouldn't want to buy pre-owned VHS tapes, from what I've seen they were probably heavily rented.

Yeah, seeing as they're being sold at a movie rental and all.

The only time I even use my VCR is to timer tape things that I'm going to miss. Even then, I usually end up downloading most of them..

From the tapes that I bought today there were no tracking problems. I would rather buy a rental master tape then get a 5th generation copy from some kid on the net. The collector in me demands that I get videos with orginal cover art.

The only VHS I would want to get from the Holywood Video near here is Lonely are the Brave so's I can copy it to DVD, and I already did that. I might check it out, but I doubt I'll get anything

From DVD Talk

And so it begins. A Hotmail dated 4/19/06 was recieved at my store today informing us of the 2nd step in Hollywood Video's process to discontinue VHS rentals in the chain. What's the plan you ask. A mass video tape exodus, coupled with a PV DVD/VHS contest. There is a list of 1,500 titles that we're to keep, while the rest are up for grabs in a 5 for $15 PV sale! That's $3 a tape on anything that isn't on the master list. YMMV depending on your region, but that's how it it's going down in the Midwest.

To put it into perspective, the VHS shelving units at my Hollywood in Blaine are as follows; 35 tapes per row, 6 rows per bay, 5 bays per section, 10 bays total accounting for both sides. We've got roughly 4,500 tapes in all, including TV sets on VHS, but not including 2 tape titles. So, given we even have the titles on the list of 1,500, we're guaranteed to put 3,000 out to pasture.

This is effective immediately, so you should expect to see the signage go up any day now. Also, PV DVD's are going back to 3/$30 on Sunday, the 21st.

I speak for pretty much everyone at more store when I say "Good Riddance". Hopefully this will open the doors for expanding some stores libraries, and potentially an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray section.

Shit. Now I've gotta go spend $200 tomorrow.

Way too many quality direct-to-video films that will never get a DVD release.

I haven't bought a VHS tape of any kind in God knows how long. DVD's and DVR has spoiled me beyond belief.

I buy a lot of my DVD's from Hollywood Video. 3 used DVD's for $30 is a good deal. Never had a problem with any that I've bought so far.

Family Videos, at least around here, are selling their VHS tapes 2 for 3 dollars. I'll stop at Hollywood and check for WCW stuff.

My HV still has tons of tapes on their shelves, and don't appear to be pulling much VHS stuff. Most of the stuff that is going is crap that is easily available on DVD.

They have an excellent horror and foreign section, and my Dad likes renting westerns a lot. So far they're not going anywhere.

The local FYE also has tapes where I am, but I've bought most of the wrestling tapes, at last check they have Best of WCW Uncensored(which I have), Best of Confidential, and Brock Lesnar Here Comes the Pain. I have a nice chunk of 2002 WWE via $5 tapes

Correction: yeah, my HV is clearing out their VHS tapes, but there's a good number of them that will be kept, and have "rental only" stickers. This includes most of the classics section and a handful of others. Don't ask me why I can't buy "Honey" but other, better, more popular movies I can.

Anyway, here's my haul for today.

Westerns for my dad:

Hondo

High Noon

The Missouri Breaks

Stuff I got:

Reanimator

Ringu 2

Taste the Blood of Dracula (there's other Hammer tapes I'm going to snatch up tomorrow, but they didn't have the original. I'm going to make a list up using imdb and see if they have them).

At another store I got Vertigo and Dial M for Murder. I hoped to add North by Northwest, but HV has it as a rental only. I could get The 39 Steps, but its nearly impossible to get early Hitch stuff that doesn't look horrible.

You want that on DVD so you can watch parts of it in slow motion without it wearing out.

Well, I went last night, I got WCW Slamboree and Bash at the Beach '99, neither were great, but eh, I wanted to own some more WCW, Wrestlemania 15, which screwed up my VCR and made me use a head cleaner, but it was only toward the end, and Rumble and No Way Out from 2001. They also had a ton of UFCs and other stuff, I am so making another trip

I've gotta buy the Warriors and a few of the early UFC's tomorrow.

Thing is, I really hate going there.

My closest HV is in Muncie. It's about a 20-minute drive, but I may check it out, don't really have anything else to do.

You should call ahead alfdogg, because you would not want to get there and be all like, "Oh man, man, everythong is sold the fuck out." That's like 40-45 minutes outta you're day for nothing, dude. Nothing.

Man, I still use VHS way more than DVD. Anyone else?

I do. Strictly wrestling though. (And being able to watch one thing somewhere, and record another when seasons decide to show shows I like at the same time, ex: Smallville/OC)

I definitely use my VHS more then my DVD player, but losing 'real' VHs will be no loss, because I said, most of the tapes I have are ones I taped myself. Not movies. I've got just about every RAW since 2001, and I still continue to tape each week, and every SD from then to sometime in 2005. They're fun to pull out on those days I just want to watch some older wrestling, or when there just isn't jackshit on tv.
