As far as strictly hard rock/metal bands, that list might suffice. If they truly mean simply "top 25 most important rock bands", then it's completely wrong. Like was mentioned, U2 should be somewhere if that's the case, as well as the Police, and probably a few New Wave bands as well. The Pixies should probably be there, as they influenced probably a quarter or even a third of the bands on that list.

I would've said that no U2 on the list means it's more of a hard rock list (it's Kerrang! after all) but then I see fricking Blink 182 listed and I scratch my head...

 

I must say I've never heard Black Flag, Fugazi, Napalm Death, or Emperor.

Black Flag and Fugazi were both hardcore, post-punk bands. Black Flag is probably the more famous, since Henry Rollins was their lead singer for a while. Fugazi kind of evolved from another band called Minor Threat, which was sort of the first "straight edge" band.

 

I couldn't tell you about the other two.

Fugazi were a pretty important band as far as influence goes. They really were the start of the DIY stuff and helped indie labels a ton. Despite plenty of offers, they never signed with a major label. Made pretty good music along the way too.

Yeah, within the "rules" of this list, Maiden is an easy number one. They've been pretty consistently one of the best metal bands there is since 1980, are still putting out great albums, and they influenced a *lot* of other bands within their genre.

 

My main complaint is that Motorhead should be higher.

I don't think I have a problem with Maiden as #1.

 

I'd have liked to have seen AcDc on there. Fuck me, but Eminem prolly should have made an appearance. Also, no U2? Or Public Enemy? Or PEarl Jam?

 

Why is Greenday so high? They were a fairly popular band until American Idiot took off, and Bush hating is essentially a fad anyway.

 

And this one might have to be chalked up to ignorance, but why is Faith No More ahead of Nirvana?

Nirvana's gotta be top 5.

They essentially created a whole genre of rock. Where would Alternative Rock be without them?

Nirvana was so great, that I still to this day can put in their unplugged and it would sound cutting edge.

 

I agree with Green Day bc without Green Day, there's no Blink 182, or all the other punk rock bands that got famous. Green Day actually was really popular in 1994. They didnt just recently become big. They deserve a place on the list, but not in front of Nirvana.

I think they chose the worst possible name for the list. I don't even really hate Korn or Blink 182 that much, but to call them important is laughable. They became popular based on existing trends, and didn't make any contributions to music in any way possible.

The key word is important. It doesn't say "most talented" or whatever. Still, the list is strange any way you look at it.

 

 

Def Leppard still put out major label albums and sell out concerts in arenas. You can write a book on why they are important. One of five bands to have two albums sell over 10 million each. One of few to chart 7 hit singles from one album. Sold more albums in the 80s than any other rock band.

Bon Jovi have done what few have or ever will. Over 100 million albums sold. Still putting out albums that go platinum and still able to sell out 50,000 seat stadiums. Meanwhile most of the bands that have come out in the last ten years can't play places that hold over 3,000.

Korn wasn't important for even a footnote. This word is getting thrown around to way too many bands. Korn wasn't important, they were just another generic rock band with crap lyrics and one of the worse lead singers in music history.

 

I guess they were important to 16 yr old angry kids who liked to pretend they beat people up in school and were abused by their parents.

Maybe your local bar band is better than Korn, but that doesn't make them important. Korn took their first album platinum with no radio play and a few showings on Headbanger's Ball. Then after people like Alanis Morissette had been dominating "alternative" radio, Korn broke huge into that, bringing heavy music to a whole new group of fans. A lot of these fans branched out and discovered Black Sabbath, Metallica and more extreme metal groups, but it was Korn that first turned them on to something heavy metal related. They were the first big downtuned "nu metal" band. If there was no Korn there would have been no Limp Bizkit, Staind, etc.
