NoCalMike Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 Just now someone called from Nielsen Ratings. I didn't answer and just let the machine get it. I'd imagine it was probably some sort of survey about what I like to watch, as Clear Channel called to do a similar thing months ago. Anyone else ever get called by someone from the Neilsen Ratings?
naiwf Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 I was actually a Nielsen family for about 4 years until we moved.
CanadianGuitarist Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 Huh? I was always under the impression it was just a tracker inside a TV. Fill me in?
Art Sandusky Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 My father once had a form he had to fill out in like, 1996 or '97 that showed what he was watching at different times, what channel, etc. I think Charleston is too small to attract much Nielsen attention otherwise, as I haven't seen or heard of anyone else I know being part of the biggest research group in America.
Dobbs 3K Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 The ratings are based on a tracker box or device installed in "Nielsen family" homes, but I believe they do conduct phone surveys as well to get a broader picture about listening habits, etc.
Richard Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 So all this time, Arrested Development could have been one of the most popular shows on tv but unable to attract people with nielsen boxes?
LessonInMachismo Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 NCM just lost his chance to become a NFM.
CanadianChris Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 So all this time, Arrested Development could have been one of the most popular shows on tv but unable to attract people with nielsen boxes? Possibly, but highly statistically unlikely.

They call you up and if you choose to become a family they come and install a cable box like instrument on the back of your TV/cable hook up to monitor what you watch. In our situation, since we moved we no longer filled the family requirement in that particular neighborhood, but they gave us the option to continue being a part of their stats by filling everything out by hand. We declined, and that was that.

Dobbs 3K Posted June 12, 2006 Report Posted June 12, 2006 Sounds like something from Arbitron (the company that handles radio ratings).
SuperJerk Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 During "sweeps" months, they mail logs to people to fill out. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...nielsen+family#
EdwardKnoxII Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 I can't help but, think of an ep of ALF where Alf was a fan of a polka show that was about to be canned. So, Alf does something with the nielsen ratings box (I forget what) and the polka show becomes the highest rated show of the week or something like that.

It was pretty much not an issue once they did the installation.
