Guitar players

Recommended Posts

Since I don't have a particular style I use a Tokai Love Rock 75 through a Line 6 Spider 2. I also use a Dunlop Cry baby.

Wondering what other guitar players here use.

Guitars are so 1990s. I play a Kona banjo. When I do play guitar, I either play a nameless Mexican acoustic that I got at a flea market or my black Ibanez EX170 which I bought for $100 when I was 15 and was into...bands that I'm ashamed that I was in to. I bought it from Josh Dupre who used to be in Deadboy and the Elephantmen with Dax Riggs who used to be in Acid Bath, who are supposedly getting back together, but that's a whole 'nother thread. Yeah, I'm good buddies with Josh Dupre's brother. My amplifier is a Crate halfstack and I have some multi-effects pedal, the brand of which escapes me. I haven't plugged in in ages.

Make the hums black and that's my guitar to a tee. Paintjob and everything.

Marshall AVT150 combo, no FX pedals (since FX are included in the amp), Dunlop .3 picks, GHS boomers 010.

I have five guitars.

Red Yamaha SE 250, my first than I bought when I was 19. I only play it occasionally now since Joe Satriani signed it for me, even though it still sounds the best.

Cream 86 Squire Strat

Aria Pro II Flying V, which I intended on hot rodding, but I doubt it now.

Black Ibanez, which you see me playing in my avatar.

and my latest baby...

And I play out of a Crate GX65 with a Zoom 505 II. Been thinking about getting a Line 6, but I am undecided to go that route or start buying pedals... thoughts, opinions?

Is that a standard custom or flametop?

Assuming this was geared towards me, I bought it from Guitar Center...4 or 5 years ago. So I'm going to assume it's standard.

I'm contemplating either getting a PA system, replacing the tubes in my amp (haven't changed them since I bought it 3 or 4 years ago), or maybe getting a new guitar (I'm thinking a BC Rich Beast II, since I dislike Warlocks, aren't a fan of BC Rich's Flying-V model, and I got some good sounds out of the Beast II that I played at Guitar Center a few months back; that, and it's pretty cheap at around $250 or so). I should prolly just replace the tubes, since I notice my amp has some good days of bone-crushing sound and some days where it sounds like it's muffled with a few layers of comforters.

And I'd say some FX pedals, Rend. My buddy Crawford has a Line 6, and I just hate the fucking sound that comes out of it. But hey, that's my own opinion.

my current rig consists of the following:

1978 Gibson Les Paul Classic (wine red) - studio

1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio (black) - studio/live

BC Rich Warlock (stickered into oblivion) - private practice (high output pickus make it a pain to use live without a ton of feedback.. sounds good in AAA though :D) )

Fender Strat (japanese, white) - practice/studio

Tanglewood Electro-acoustic - studio/live

Boss Chorus pedal

DOD Grunge pedal (even though it`s old and well... crap)

Vox Wah pedal

for Amps i prefer Marshall Valestates, i like a transistor clean channel and a valve on the dirt, plus the newer marshalls have a great dirt channel so no need for any pedals, just a channel switcher :D

however i`m running through my Park practice amp at the moment because my marshall got lost by the movers.. ass hats.

How are the necks on gibson studios? I've heard they are too chunky to play decent lead on them. The only gibson necks I've played are slim taper.

they all vary slightly of course, but the one i`ve got is a slightly larger than average C profile. it`s pretty thick, but lead is no problem, it`s one of the fastest guitars i`ve ever played (the fastest was a jackson V with a super thin D profile.. damn near flat it was)

i had a white studio that was a chunky bastard though, the neck on that wasn`t too good for lead, but like i said, they all vary.. just try a few out :)

News to me as well. And with KKK being white? I'm still digesting that one.

I've never been one for he flying V, actually. I've always found it difficult to keep steady, although I'm not known for my patience.

A yard sale Bentley acoustic and an Ibanez R7.

You think V's are hard to keep steady? Try playing with a clear-body Warlock. I had to borrow my buddy Jason's once for a month or two because my Strat was in the shop for a saudering (which, in hindsight, I could've done myself) and I didn't have enough money to get my Explorer yet, and that motherfucker prolly is the biggest reason my back hurts all the time. It weighed, like, 40 pounds or so, and always sounded like shit.

That said...Guitar Center is having a pretty huge sale today (it's been going on for a month or so, but I'm heading there today), and I'm probably getting a BC Rich Son of the Beast. Lightweight, decent sound, and pretty cheap.

Didn't get a Son of the Beast. Ended up getting a Warlock instead because it was $169.99, and I had a 20% off coupon for being a "frequent buyer" (even though the only things I've bought there in the last 3 years or so have been strings, picks, and a strap).

i found my warlock to be neck heavy.. but nearly as bad as the older mockingbirds.

you want a heavy guitar? try my LP Classic.. i thinkit`s made of a condensed oak tree... and lead pickups :D

I've got a Carvin XB76 Fretless with a Hughes and Kettner ATTAX preamp, and a 1000Watt poweramp pushing 2 12"s 2 8"s and a horn. Recently added a 15" sub. It fuckin' beats.

have you ever tried mesa/boogie bass amps??

Wait. You're black? And that old?

He's mentioend it before in race related topics I think. Didn't surprise me, though I didn't know he was that old.

Yeah, I'm 37, and I am sure I have mentioned it before, especially in the "how old are you" thread done some time in the last year or two. I think I'm in the top five in age on this board. Hell, maybe even top three.

That's why I can comment on a bunch of wide-ranging topics you whippersnappers bring up. Chances are I've lived it, ya punks. ::shakes his cane for emphasis::

And thanks for clarifying that for me, Paragon. Rant is just being himself.

Getting back to the subject of guitars, I bought my new Ibanez back in February, I think. Basically its a strat/les paul hybrid. It plays pretty well, though I have to adjust to not having the fret markers which causes me to fuck up a little more, and the thicker neck. I usually play my black Ibanez more often, and have my Strat tuned down to D#/Eb so I can learn more songs in that tuning, like most of Megadeth's Youthanasia.

I think the bridge pickup on my Yamaha is opened up wide, because I get one hell of a sound out of it, despite the fact I've had her for 18 years now. I'm convinced that if I bought a couple of Mesa Boogies I could sound like Hetfield circa the Black Album.

Yeah Corey, I think I am going to start buying pedals, starting with the Boss DS-1. I used to have a Boss HM-1 back when I lived in Connecticut, but when my parents moved, it was "lost" along with 90% of the things they did not agree with. Maybe a DS-1 and a couple of others, then of course a pedalboard to tie it all together.

Speaking of that, I need to know of a good effect like a Line 6 that can plug directly into the computer to make mp3s out of. I used to go through a mic, but for some reason that will not work. Suggestions?

I'm pretty pitiful playing slap honestly. I've got it set up with really low and fast action, tune it similar to a guitar in B or Bflat and use it for wall-of-sound doom stuff, or my grindcore projects. I've got a Peavey BXP that I'm more comfortable slapping on, but I don't like performing in that style too much.

Never played through a Mesa Boogie bass amp. My "amp" is actually just parts of a couple different PA setups, and the preamp is technically meant for lead guitar. I find that type of equipment to be far superior to actual dedicated "bass amps."

I also hate, hate, hate multi effects pedals. The lead setting on the preamp has godtons of gain, so I don't fuck with distortion pedals. I'm pretty sure I've got an older Digitech reverb/delay box that I never use, and a Bass wah that I use even less. If you've got a whole board of pedals, your amp/preamp is insufficient.

i hear you on the multi effects boards dude, they`re a pain in the arse and not always conducive to operation on poorly lit stages.

you got any mp3`s of your grindcore stuff online?

No. I'm a glorified hobbyist at best. The only recordings I have worth listening to are a cassette of an early death band I played guitar in, and a videotape of a show where I sat in with The Christpunchers. That show was the best thing ever, since it was eleven friends, maximum-stoned, playing different songs on stage at the same time, with one guy beating the shit out of himself. Cleared the room it was so loud and horrible.
