AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2006 The PS1 game is hard to find now, at least out of EB Games/Gamestop. After the movie it seems lots of people started trying the series, which shocks me. So a game that's 7 years old, has gone GH, has likely a million + copies out there--is now in such high demand you're going to have a hard time finding a copy under 30 bucks. Insane. 2, 3, and 4 are also getting to be in short supply, but nothing approaching SH1 yet. Oh, and a few other observations: NES Classics Super Mario Bros GBA is in a similar situation. I only saw 1 today running around the Pittsburgh area, and Gamestop was charging 20 bucks. Ha! Shadow Hearts 1 has apparently gotten a reprint. Other rare titles to get reprints (that are more well known)--Gitaroo Man and Rez. Silent Hill is backordered on the EBGames website, and currently they want $17.99. I've actually been looking for it for a friend, but after playing some of Silent Hill 2 (I have already collected 2 and 4 for him, and 3 is on the way from an online purchase) I might find myself getting into this series. Special K 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2006 Silent Hill 2 is the best of the series. Incredible, soul-destroying plot. Pyramid Head. It's scary as fuck. Silent Hill 1 is still good, the opening scene shocked the shit out of me when I first played it. That goddamn motherfucking piano puzzle, though. I play piano. Well. I look at the puzzle, and then at the walkthrough. Puzzle. Walkthrough. It still doesn't make any sort of sense.

dubq 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 My buddy had #1 and he just gave it over to me, free of charge, because he never plays it anymore. Score! All I need is 2 now. I've never played 2 and it's apparently the best one.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Kicks SH 1 ass, but both are must haves.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Half.com has SH2 on there for usually around 10 bucks or less. I picked up the one I have in a pawn shop, complete for 10. SH2 is the easiest to find by far, but Gamestop jacked it up to $19.99 bucks used. Ditto for FFX. The game is 20 ****ing dollars new! Why?! You can still buy FFX-2 for $9.99. It being a piece of crap probably has something to do with that.

dubq 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 I'm still stuck in #1 trying to kill the first enemy you encounter in the diner. Yes, yes, I know. I suck.

Then you wake up at the cafe, talk to Cybil, and then... yeah. Once you can leave the cafe, go back to the alley with the dead body strung up. It's marked on your map. Sideburnious 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Oh right, thanks. I just tried it a few times, and as soon as I died I was just like "fuck this" and turned it off.
Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted July 7, 2006 Heh. I did that with Silent Hill 3, years and years ago. I'm only just now playing it again. It's awesome. So far my fighting abilities include the incredible "run the fuck away" ability! But it's kind of coming close to scaring me as much as the first SH game did, which would be nice. Special K 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 On the downside, Silent Hill 4 is terrible. They took everything that made RE annoying and added it to the game. Pain to save? Check. There's one place in the whole game to save. Of course there's lots of paths back to it. Incredibly stingy item management? Check. Basically you run around with a melee weapon all game, since each box of bullets takes an inventory space. Plus you have all those cases where, 'Oh gaddammit I needed the Seal of Lazarus, not the Silver Key.' Time to trudge back to your damn apartment! Poorly defined goals? Yup. Having an idiot NPC follow you around? Check and double-check. Not only do you have to keep he/she alive, you have to keep from taking damage at all, otherwise you get a shit ending. It's really too bad, because there are some very creepy moments in the game, and the plot is interesting. but you're too frustrated to get into it. About a third of the game is walking back and forth from your apartment to save, or inventory manage. Yay. Once I found out I had to go through every single area again (always a crowd pleaser!) I just had to turn it off. The really nice part of the first 3 games is they were largely frustration-free. You could adjust the puzzle and combat levels to your area of liking, to play the game how YOU wanted. You had all your incentory on hand, and save points were pretty abundant. Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted July 8, 2006 The fourth game was a dreadful experience. I completely lost interest when I got back to the Forest World again. Having your dear serial killer friend follow you around, trying to stab you to death constantly... Yeah, no, I'm good. And your companion wasn't nearly as annoying as that, but still, not the most fun thing ever. At least your companion couldn't die. Then again, neither could your stab-happy little friend, or the ghosts. Story-wise, it was fairly interesting, at least. I enjoyed meeting all those new people (and then seeing what happened to them). I liked learning the backstory, too. But yeah wow that was a lousy gaming experience. Guest NYankees Report post Posted July 8, 2006 I only played the first Silent Hill back in 1999 when it came out. Can someone please give me a feel for the games. Thanks to gamefly I am getting back into my love for the Resident Evil franchise for the gamecube. I bought RE4 last year and beat it and I have just rented and beat RE1 and 2 and I am playing zero right now. I am looking forward to playing CV and 3 which I have never played. haws bah gawd 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 At the Gamestop where I work, for the past couple of weeks especially, the prices for FFX and X-2 have skyrocketed. The price for X-2 has climbed over $8 in the past week alone, and X now costs more for a used copy than a new one. My store has a similar situation with Sims 2 for the Gamecube. For some reason, a new copy of the game at my store is $19.99 while a used one will set you back $34.99.
Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted July 8, 2006 are all the games in order chronologically? Storyline-wise, the order is somewhat 1,3,2,4. However, the chronology is up in the air. As far as I know, the chronology pretty much matches the order of the games. There's just little references to SH2 in SH3 and then both in SH4, etc. But yeah, 3 is a direct sequel to 1 and 4 is kind of a sequel to 2. 4 can stand on its own all right, though; you don't really need to play 2 in order to understand it. Who is going to pay 35 dollars for a used version of the Sims. You could probably buy it used on ebay for 5 bucks. Gamestop/EBX/Babbages really need to learn how to liquadate their inventory when they have hundreds of used games sitting on the shelf.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2006 Okay, finally got me a copy of the original silent hill--playing through it while a friend gets the cash together to buy all the stuff I'm holding for him. For a PS1 game the graphics have aged rather well, and it's still pretty damn freaky... I've just gotten to the Alternate school. DAMN!
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2006 4 can stand on its own all right, though; you don't really need to play 2 in order to understand it. A friend claims it was actually not originally supposed to be a SH game...they kind of decided to make it loosely a SH game later on. I've finished Silent hill 1 with the best ending and will be starting on SH2 probably later on this month. Reading some of the plot and symbolism guides...geez, the kind of detail and references that went into these games are utterly insane. However, when you read some of this stuff after a lot of the in-game events go over you're head, you're like "ooooooooh, now I get it!"
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2006 In case you somehow missed all the commercials and the ads on game sites, Silent Hill the movie is out on DVD. My Wal-Mart is attempting to unload dvds of Resident Evil by bundling it free with Silent Hill (yeah, it's free; the same price for the 2pack as for the dvd itself). Also, they're doing something similar with FF7 Advent Children and FF TSW (buy AC and get the bundled TSW free). EDIT: While the Wal-mart 2 pack is $20 (the same price you'll see most places), Target has it for $16.99 for this week only (22nd to the 28th). However, FYE has it for $12.99 "after rebate" (the details of which I am not sure of). However, since I had a gift card, I got the wal-mart set for only $10 cash and immediately traded in the RE dvd at gamestop for an extra $2.

Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted August 23, 2006 Circuit City has it for $16.99 (until Saturday). They're offering a 48-page comic book with purchase. However, since I had a gift card, I got the wal-mart set for only $10 cash and immediately traded in the RE dvd at gamestop for an extra $2. At that trade-in price, I would have just kept the movie.
