Words cannot describe how altogether mediocre this movie was. Slow, convoluted plot that instead of being explained in the first five minutes is dragged out over 2 1/2 hours. Could've had a good half hour to forty mins trimmed from it. Too much CG. Unlikeable characters. Wow. I can't believe this is getting the praise it is.

 

I enjoyed this movie and wound up buying it, but I do agree with you. I GREATLY prefer the first one. I think that some things will get fixed or explained through the last one, but I definately agree it should have been shorter. I had seen it in the theaters, and when I watched the DVD, I thought it was almost done and wound up still having an hour left.

I liked Davy Jones, but yes, the loss of Rush hurt the film. Even the first one wasn't that good, it only seems that way because of Depp & Rush. Any scene without either of them was death. I'd honestly rate both films about the same. Shallow and flawed films, that provides good fun and a few entertaining performances. They are pure summer popcorn flick, but not nearly as good as say...the Spider-Man series. As far as boat movies go, Master & Commander was far surperior in almost every way to either Pirates film.

The ,movie didn't explain itself in Five Minutes? If that's an honest criticism, then maybe you should go back to watching The Mighty Morphing Power Rangers.

 

Unlikeable characters? Well, I will chalk that one up to you as personal criticism... So I'll leave it at that. I for one, loved the characters, and am quite sure many others feel the same way. I did miss Geoffrey Rush... but he'll obviously have a role come next film... unless he jobs in FIVE MINUTES TO SUPAH VILLANE OF DEETH!!&@#$@ CHOW YUNGA FATMOMMA!!!

They're going to have a lot to explain in the last movie though. Will it end up being hugely successful or will it peter out like, oh, Matrix Revolutions?

Does anyone else hate orlando blooms acting in these films? In particualr the 1st film. I really want to enjoy the film but his stupid face and crap acting annoy me.

The only way they could truly fuck this up is to have Depp in some kind of limbo for an eternity a la Neo in Revolutions, and then have no real payoff. Thing is, they can go most anywhere with POTC really. Unlike the Matrix series there isn't a locked in goal that isn't accomplished (namely there the destruction of the Matrix and downfall of the machines, which never happens).

 

Bloom doesn't really kill the movies for me. He's the sap hero, most movies have one.

Ironic triva: The first Pirates film was conceived as a vehicle to make Olando Bloom a huge fucking star and make him a household name. But the media, utterly realizing that Bloom is a shit actor, ignored Bloom for Johnny Depp and his character as being the star of the film and the main reason to watch POTC1.

 

So take my advice and simply ignore the crappy actor in the film as no one gives a fuck about Bloom's character in the first place.

Bloom's okay. He's not fantastic like Depp, but I don't think he's detrimental to the actual film.

 

Overall, I think it was an above-average film.

 

- I can't believe people had a problem with the look of the villains. Seriously, you gotta be kidding me. I loved their look; slightly disturbing at first, but it grew on me quick. The villains themselves were a bit underwhelming. I think it came from how much special effects were used with them: The facial expressions from Geoffry Rush along with his gestures really helped the character. With Davy, there's very little change in him. The fact that he's not far enough removed Barbarosa's character to really grab you doesn't help, either.

 

- The action was really good at points, and at other points it was just "Why am I watching this?" I thought the two guys and Elizabeth fighting was interesting, but the whole water-wheel thing was "What the hell?" Whoever talked about the air of believability had it right for me: I can believe in Kraken and all sorts of mystical crap, but soem of the actions scenes (Like Depp falling HOW far?) were just too wacky.

 

- I knew people who had a problem with Barbarossa coming back. I thought that was batshit crazy and thought that it was pretty obvious that Voodoo lady was bringing him back since his boots were there from the start.

 

- The Kraken was INCREDIBLE. I thought it stole the scenes it was in and I frankly loved the effects. Reminded me of the Hydra from the game God of War the way it was whipping through the ship.

 

- No ones' mentioned it yet, but this was easily the bloodiest Disney movie ever made. Seriously, how many people died in this? All off-camera, of course, but the staggering body count for a "family film" was surprising.

Just watched it again tonight on DVD. The film just flys by for me up until they get to the island where the chest is. It's got my excited about the third film again, it had kind of fallen of my radar.

 

Interesting aside, my current girlfriend went to the same school as Keira Knightly in Teddington, two years below her. Apparently she still comes back to Teddington from time to time and crashs parties.

I watched it on DVD tonight with some friends, was even better than I remembered it, there were some character strands that I missed at the theater and things didnt make sense. It was a lot clearer now. I can't wait for part 3.

I was one of the ones who thought Davy Jones and Co. looked really sickening on the first viewing, but watching again I kinda got used to them more.

 

Wanna hear something funny? I used to talk to this girl who was this huge Orlando Bloom fan. When discussing POTC 1 she said the following: "Orlando really carried that movie." I think Bloom may well be the Laurence Harvey of his generation, in that his films succeed almost in spite of him rather than because of him.

Orlando has a good thing going for himself. Teenage girls think he can act because they can't stop staring at him and the rest of us don't seem to notice him much because he luckily isn't being asked to carry a film. We can sorta stand him as background "eye candy" as long as he doesn't try to do much of that stuff he calls acting.

 

The films he has been asked to carry, like Elizabethtown, are so bad that they will never get remembered. He'll just get remembered for the LOTR films, the POTC films and Troy. He has got it made.

Kingdom of Heaven was something Bloom also had to be the lead in, and he was decidedly mediocre in it. Movie itself wasn't too bad though.

 

Bloom to me is kinda like Joaquin Phoenix before Walk the Line, in that he was in several successful movies but he wasn't asked to carry anything. Phoenix at least delivered the goods, but in all honesty what roles are ideal for Bloom? I'd like to see him at least try light comedy, maybe he has some unseen flair for it. Otherwise he can't really convince as an action hero, he's deadening as a romance lead (as Troy would show) in a serious film.

 

You know that hilarious part? I bet I've seen damn near everything the guy has been in at the theater.

I watched the first hour, maybe a little over. Ultimately the whole affair was too dark, dull, pointless, and thoroughly uninteresting. There were a few spots I enjoyed - Pintel and Ragetti are damn cute; drunk Norrington!; whipped Will!; emo Bootstrap! - but mostly everything felt forced.

 

It didn't even <i>feel</i> like PotC. Ultimately that's what bothered me to the point of turning it off. Davy Jones was just gross. The writers/producers seemed extremely keen on pushing the darker side of the characters as much as possible. As much as I loves me some darkness, it just seemed extremely out of place here. Do we really need to see a crow peck out a guy's eyes within the first, oh, fifteen minutes of the film? The body count for was equally disturbing. This is based on the sequal of a theme-park movie, for heaven's sake.

 

Ultimately, I think I wasted my $3. They took out everything good about the first film and put in as much dirt, grime, bad teeth, and looney toons-type logic as they possibly could.
