TWiB 7/24 - 7/30

Recommended Posts

The 'Stros held on to beat the Reds 8-5. Brad Lidge might be out of a job. He came in to close it but gave up a hit and a HBP before striking out Freel. He then got yanked in favor of Trever Miller, who, in turn, got yanked for Dan Wheeler after getting Jr. Griffey. Tomorrow nite, we need to win against my brother's favorite pitcher...Elizardo Ramirez. My brother's got weird taste. If we take 3 outta the next 4, I think our 33:1 odds will improve.

So the Yankees score 4 off the Texas bullpen to take the lead only to have THEIR bullpen give it right back on 3 runs without recording an out.

I can't remember a year when so many bullpens were so shaky. Any team that has solid bullpen help up for grabs is going to make out like a bandit in this market.

I understand that the YANKESS are popular and ESPN would want to show them a lot, but do they have it in the contract they have to show at least 3 YANKESS games a week?

That's very frustrating for me, because every time ESPN shows the Yankees it gets blacked out and I get two channels of ESPNnews.

That would get annoying I suppose, but on the other hand I don't get ESPN News here so at least if I got them blacked out I'd get that for awhile.

Yeah, but then you have to spend your weeknight wondering what's become of your life.

Texas had 6 straight hits in the bottom of the 8th to take a 7-6 lead over the yankees. They had the bases loaded with nobody out and Torre brought in Chacon. Chacon was about to get a strike out and a line drive double play to get out of the inning without giving up a run. Derek Jeter led off the top of the ninth with a single followed by a Jason Giambi bomb to give the Yankees a 7-6 lead over the Rangers.

This update makes zero sense.

Sorry. After the Rangers had taken the 7-6 lead, they had the bases loaded with nobody out. Chacon was brought into the game and was able to strand the bases loaded without giving up anymore runs. The Yankees then took the lead in the top of the ninth. What a fucking emotional rollercoaster that game was.

Anyone mention that A-Rod sparked the Yankees rally tonight which the bullpen happened to blow? No, didn't think so.

HA! During Sunday's game Jon Miller mentioned like a dozen times how he asked Wilson Betemit how to pronounce his name and he told him "Bet-a-meat" so he was sure to pronounce it that way 10 zillion times. Pete Van Wieren on the Braves telecast just pronounced it the way all the Braves crew do: Bet-a-mit. He then proceeded to say he was going to keep saying it that way, because Betemit said it's pronounced both ways, and in English it is Bet-a-mit and since this is an English telecast he'll use Bet-a-mit. Thank you Pete. Also maybe I heard it wrong, but it sure sounded like he said that Wilson said the way to pronounce it in his in language is "bet-a-me" Maybe he just said it wrong, but I really am gonna laugh if Jon Miller is still getting it wrong.

Amusing/Sad bit about Ryan Franklin:

Phillies reliever Ryan Franklin keeps six to seven pitches in his arsenal - about four more than the best-loaded reliever. They have not served him well.

Quentin hit a hanging slider, which Franklin estimates nine of the 10 homers have come on. So, has he considered whittling his pitches to, say, three... effective ones?

"Yeah," Franklin said. "But I want to start somewhere next season. So, I'm going to keep throwing all of them."

Two points about this:

a.) so other teams are going to be impressed by the fact he throws a pitch he knows is ineffective and hand him a starting job?

b.) fuck him. His role is to be a reliever this season. He got a bit of a hose job when Adam Bernero was brought up for a spot start, but get over it. That attitude would certainly make me want to sign him up for my team. "Well this is the role I want next year, so that is what I am trying to accomplish."

Nobody has explained why Caribbean baseball players have Germanic/Scandinavian surnames as given names. Robinson, Wilson, Anderson, etc. Come on. Anderson? Do they just really admire Minnesota? What's the deal?

The Dutch have a pretty sizable presence in the Caribbean in terms of Aruba and Curacao. If you ever see the LLWS, the team from Curacao or the Netherlands Antilles always seems to be full of really dark skinned ballplayers with Scandinavian names. Why a Dominican is named Robinson is beyond me, but that's my explanation.

Well yeah, Curacao I would get, but I think we're mostly dealing with Dominicans. Furthermore, I think your -son and -sen surnames are generally Norwegian.

Like, I thought maybe Robinson Cano was named after Jackie Robinson, a player his father admired, but you can't predict that your son will be a major-leaguer, even when you're from the Dominican Republic.

DUSTY IS NOT THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM IT ARE INJURIES THAT HAVE BEEN TEARING THEM APART.

Winning two of three from the Mets can save your job, it would seem. I didn't expect Dusty to be fired, but this pretty much kills the chance of any of the youngsters getting a fair crack for the last two months. Instead, it'll probably be a lot of starting Neifi, Angel Pagan in left and Glendon Rusch wherever he can be thrown in there.

Benson is going to miss his next start on Sunday due to his elbow.

Possibile Candidates to fill in include Radhames Liz (AA), Hayden Penn (AAA) and Daniel Cabrera (AAA) or Bruce Chen (BOO!). I hadn't seen any stats on Cabreras work in Ottawa but he doesn't look like hes improving at all (1-1, 4.15 ERA 13 IP 6 B 10 K). Radhames Liz (odd name) in 3 starts at AA Bowie is 2-1, 2.00 ERA 18 IP 18 Ks. Penn is 3-2 1.99 ERA in 8 Starts.

I say go for the Liz guy.. 18 Ks in 18 IP is pretty good. I figure Chen gets the start since it wouldnt require a roster move.

Joe Morgan thinks the Phillies need to trade Abreu or Burrell because the Phillies haven't won with that nucleus. Never mind the terrible starting pitching has been the team's real downfall during that time.

That's what I was trying to say when I posted in all caps. He has half an idea of what he's talking about, and he's usually right on one point, but then he swings and misses on the most important one.

Indeed. That was the statement of the night.

I miss Harold Reynolds...even though it took me 2 years to understand him.
