The Man in Blak Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the possibility that Roger Clemens may have had a hand in the order to trade Lidge, since he did blow yet another Clemens lead in the ninth last night. Sure, it's speculation, but it seems all too plausible, especially when you consider all of the concessions that the Astros give to Clemens anyway. They're going to get rid of their young closer because a guy who's only pitching for them for three months told them to? Not likely. Lidge was mentioned in a couple of offseason rumors, so it's not like the organization has demonstrated that they are unwilling to trade him. Also, I'm pretty sure you realize that Clemens isn't just some "guy who's only pitching for them for three months". Viva could probably speak more to it but, as it understand it, Clemens is a big time public ambassador for the team, positive locker room influence, and huge draw whenever he pitches (I'm sure he gives Brandon Backe a run for his money). Never mind that the guy is the arguably the best player on the entire team - he contributes to the organization in other ways and, given that clout, I wouldn't be surprised if Clemens was frustrated after seeing yet another one of his wins get coughed up by a pitcher that has seemed all too hittable since Pujols disentegrated that hanging slider in last year's NLCS.
Guest Posada20 Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Atlanta and Boston are talking about Andruw Jones for Coco Crisp, Craig Hansen and another prospect. I don't think that Scheurholz is that stupid It was supposedly Crisp, Hansen and Lester for Jones, Boston shot it down. Do you really think that's a bad deal for Atlanta? That's a good deal but if you take out Lester like Boston wanted it's not a good deal. I'm just glad the Braves didn't blow Boston and give in like the Padres and Diamondbacks would.
Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 It's pretty much John Manuel talking about Soriano, the Pirates, Dodgers and Hughes.
bob_barron Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Trading Andruw Jones would be a huge PR blow to the franchise. Plus if those prospects don't pan out, then the Braves basically got Coco Crisp for him. They have Hampton and Davies coming back healthy next year, and I hope Hudson will be out of his funk. They'll be okay.
Precious Roy Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Braves PR? LOL. Get back to me when the city actually cares about the team. They don't even sell out playoff games! I think getting swept by the Mets in front of the biggest houses of the season was about as bad as PR gets. Lester is pitching for Boston already, he's 5-1 with a 3.49 era. He's a lefty. And he's 22 years old. He's widely considered one of the top pitching prospects in the game. It's not really a question of if he pans out, it's a question of how good can he be. Like I said, I'm not surprised that Boston turned it down, they're not trading Lester.
Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Kip Wells is likely going to Boston. I'm waiting for the inevitable Maddux to LA deal.
vivalaultra Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Clemens could order Lidge to be gone and Lidge would be gone. He's got pull. In other news, Steve Phillips just pissed me off by saying that the Orioles were going to trade Tejada for Oswalt and then the Mets were going to trade for Oswalt. Last nite, it was the Orioles that were going to flip Oswalt to the Rangers. I hate Steve Phillips. Right now Jayson Stark said that the Pirates are about to deal Oliver Perez and Roberto Hernandez to the Mets. He also is saying that Clemens is going nowhere. I trust Stark more than any other ESPN analyst. Lidge was on Dan Patrick and said that he's going nowhere, and Oswalt and the Astros are apparently now working on a 5-year deal. I hate the trade deadline.
Guest Felonies! Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Braves PR? LOL. Get back to me when the city actually cares about the team. They don't even sell out playoff games! Remind me again why Atlanta doesn't care about the Braves. With a nice park and a contending team, they should do better at the gate. Is it just that they're bored with NLDS exits? Or that less money has been going into payroll? Is it that Atlanta's sizable contingent of black folk prefer football and basketball, and don't really care about a team that always seems kinda white-bread?
MarvinisaLunatic Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 So maybe..Perez/Hernandez for Nady is the biggest move in this ESPN 2 hour deadline special so far. OOH
Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 With a nice park and a contending team, they should do better at the gate. Is it just that they're bored with NLDS exits? I think you answered that. It's also hotter than shit.
Precious Roy Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 I think it's the white bread thing. Bobby Cox doesn't care about black people. They need more black guys with cornrows and names like Lastings Milledge. Apparently the Cubs are close to trading Todd Walker to San Diego

I lived in Atlanta for a year and it seemed to be much more of a college sports town. Everybody down there cares about either UGA or Georgia Tech football. I also think that alot of fans are just burnt out on the Braves and the fact that they haven't won since 1995 and haven't been to the world series since 1999.
C Dubya 04 Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 So from following the trade rumors I've really decided that basically the ESPN experts will make up a huge rumor so that they can later shoot it down. I think they just call random people and say "give me the names of two baseball players" and then use that as their source for the trade rumors.

Yeah, but it's a nice break from the non-stop A-Rod/Ozzie Guillen jibber jabber
Guest Princess Leena Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 I guess it's because of the black population in Atlanta... It wasn't until they got Ron Mexico that the Georgia Dome started selling out on a regular basis. Even their SB didn't change things.

Apparently the Cubs are close to trading Todd Walker to San Diego What would Stubbly fetch us? More than a Single-A prospect, I hope.
Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 What would Stubbly fetch us? More than a Single-A prospect, I hope. Jose Ceda, a 19 year old Dominican starting pitcher.
Guest Felonies! Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Does he have a history of arm trouble? Psh, like I have to ask.
Guest NYankees Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Texas Rangers pick up Matt Stairs from the Royals.
Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Does he have a history of arm trouble? Psh, like I have to ask. His ERA is in the shitter. 5.09 in 23 innings pitched in the AZ Rookie League. .235 BA against.

the max Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Two of Boston's top pitching prospects and a solid young OF is a bad deal? People think Lester is a future ace and Hansen will be a top of the line closer. Atlanta's biggest problem is pitching and they're not winning anything until they fix that. I would take the deal if I was Boston because Manny-Ortiz-Jones would be SICK, but I'm not surprised that they didn't, Lester and Hansen are basically untouchable. Hansen is surprisingly available. Lester, Papelbon and Pedroia are the untouchables.
Precious Roy Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 The Rangers swoop in and steal Kip Wells from the Red Sox
Guest NYankees Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Yankees trade Shawn Chacon to the Pirates for Craig Wilson.
KingPK Posted July 31, 2006 Author Report Posted July 31, 2006 Kip Wells: 1-5 | SV 0 | ERA 6.69 | WHIP 1.76 Texas can have him. The Yankees pick up a 1B in Craig Wilson for Chacon. Geez, when George gets going, look out.

I remember went to Atlanta, I discovered a lot of people who live in Atlanta aren't from Atlanta, so a lot of people living there haven't grown up as fans. Plus I think they're gettng tired of the team winning but then getting bounced in 5 games. Plus they don't have Turner's money anymore.
Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 There will probably be more trades announced within the next few hours, this isn't it.
The Man in Blak Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Yankees trade Shawn Chacon to the Pirates for Craig Wilson. Is this confirmed? They just traded Sean Casey so that this guy could get some playing time, and the value on Chacon can't get much lower.
Precious Roy Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 The Yankees pick up ANOTHER outfielder in Craig Wilson for Chacon. Where the hell are they gonna play all these guys? Wow. I like Chacon but he's kind of sucked this year, that's another damn good deal for the Bombers. Wilson can play first base, so it probably spells the end of Phillips and/or Guile. It's also an indication that they don't expect much from Sheff and/or Matsui.
